Spurs-Clippers Preview

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO Posted Nov 07 2012 1:12AM The San Antonio Spurs' dominance of the Los Angeles Clippers carried into the playoffs last season.

That doesn't seem likely to change just yet.

The Spurs look to continue their best-ever start Wednesday night when they face the Clippers for the first time since sweeping them last spring.

San Antonio (4-0) disposed of upstart Los Angeles (2-2) in four straight games in the second round of the playoffs last season before being eliminated by Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals.

The Spurs' sweep of the Clippers wasn't much of a surprise since they had won 48 of the previous 54 regular-season meetings. San Antonio is 24-4 in its last 28 road games against the Clippers, including two playoff victories.

The Spurs enter this visit to Staples Center on a season-opening four-game winning streak for the best start in the franchise's 40-year history.

"It's just a stat, not that important in the long-term," swingman Manu Ginobili said. "(But) at this point we are enjoying it. It's curious that a team this successful hasn't started that well before."

A season-high 57 points from their reserves helped the Spurs to a 101-79 rout of visiting Indiana on Monday.

"That's kind of been our motto," said guard Gary Neal, who had 17 points off the bench. "With Manu (Ginobili) coming off and Stephen Jackson, those guys could be starting on any team in the NBA. We are a deep team. We've just got to maintain effort when the bench comes in."

Tim Duncan continues to be a force for San Antonio in his 16th season, leading the team with 19.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks.

The 13-time All-Star averaged 21.0 points on 59.4 percent shooting against the Clippers in the playoffs.

Tony Parker sat out the last regular-season meeting with Los Angeles due to a sore thigh, but went on to average 20.7 points in the final three postseason matchups.

The Clippers are trying to avoid a winless three-game homestand after committing 25 turnovers - their highest total in almost two years - in Monday's 108-101 loss to Cleveland. Their 18.8 turnovers are among the most in the league.

"You make 25 turnovers and you're going to lose just about every time," guard Chris Paul said. "But it's early though. It's better we do this now than later, but we'll be all right."

Paul is averaging 18.5 points and 11.5 assists through four games, and he had 36 and 11, respectively, in a 120-108 win at San Antonio on March 9. However, he was held to 12.8 points per game with 9.3 assists in the playoff loss to the Spurs.

Blake Griffin averaged 21.0 points and 7.8 rebounds in that series, and he's coming off a season-high 20-point performance against the Cavaliers.

Despite the recent struggles, the Clippers are scoring 104.3 points per game, an increase of 6.8 points from last season. http://www.nba.com/games/20121107/SASLAC/gameinfo.html

Beat the Spurs!!! Them and the Knicks are the hottest teams in the NBA now. If the Clippers can win Wednesday, that would give them huge confidence! I believe!

Spurs are a great 3 point team, that sucks because we can't defend 3's if our lives depended on it.

And they are disciplined, which is a trait we glaringly lack. Hoping for the best but this is a recipe for disaster. I think we could be amazing, which is why I am so frustrated.

I agree. Danny Green, Leonard, Manu, Neal, Bonner, SJackson, can all bomb 3's. If the Clippers can rebound better and have less TO's, they have a good chance of winning. I'm confident we will have less TO's. The rebounding I'm worried. Luckily Diaw at PF isn't a great rebounder. But DJ better box the hell out of Duncan.

This will be a real test. The Spurs are a cold-blooded machine. If we play half-assed we will get blown out.

I have a feeling our guys will be ready for the Spurs and play a better all around game than against the Cavs and the Warriors.

I just hope we don't go down early in the game and have to play catch up in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Our team seems to rise to the occasion playing solid playoff teams. It is the rest of the games this season against none playoff teams I am worried about. Even most of the bad teams in the NBA have improved since last season.

Hopefully DJ will have a decent game against the Spurs. If the starters play like they did against the Cavs I hope Vinny will keep our defensive bench unit in longer.

DJ is gonna get burned by Duncan, this is how: 1st DJ sags off DUncan and lets him shoot that mid range jumper all day, 2nd he buys into the fake clearing an open driving lane for Duncan to dish it or finish it himself, 3rd Duncan just posts up DJ!

Let's no forget how bad our turnovers have been this year... 25 last night. That combined with second chance points won't cut it against these guy. Hopefully they play with a consistent swagger after getting swept last year.

That's what Vinny is focusing on in practice: http://www.nba.com/clippers/news/clippers-look-improve-glass But than again saying and doing are 2 different things, let's see what happens, Blake's elbow is a concern!

Beating SA is very very unlikely, but than again we did make one of the greatest comebacks in game 1 of Griz, I guess we'll have to wait and see!

It will definitely be tough. But I think they will play a lot better this game just like against the Griz and Lakers, 2 playoff teams from last year. Getting swept by the Spurs is still in their heads. I believe the Clippers will step it up and win!

For those of you who are new Clipper fans, don't be surprised if we blow them out. That's how we do things. A couple of years ago in the Baron era, we beat every elite team except the Suns and lost to the Nets who had been touted as one of the worst teams ever. To make it worse several of their starters were hurt so their bench beat us.

SA are always gonna be dangerous as long as they have Pop. This will be a tough game but I expect 110 percent from our guys. We will prove the league that Clippers are legit contenders.

^^ love the optimism you guys have but sadly im really struggling to muster up the hope for this one...even if its just 4 games in. We had an incredible opportunity to be 4-0 or 3-1 and blew it. Blake has regressed, CP3 doesnt turn it on until late, DJs post game was left behind in the preseason. I like Crawford and Bledsoe and Caron only right now.

I think we will beat San Antonio as I always think we will beat every team, but it is going to be a very hard win if we can't get those defensive rebounds. Hopefully, DJ and BG learned something from the two previous games, and to make it more difficult for us, expect Pop to throw the Hack-a-DJ once again.

They're a great team, so we should be fine Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_16

Take care of the ball. Don't collapse off shooters. Get rebounds.

Pretty simple really.

A must win guys. If we lose tonight, we are basically the Lakers in reverse. If the Lakers win, we're tied tomorrow morning and we squandered a great opportunity to capitalize in the Pacific. The season is young, and we won two valuable games that can come in handy late in the season for seeding but this game has to be a statement game to us fans.

We need to start Crawford. They will put Danny Green on CP so Parker will be slouching on Willie Green.

Putting Crawford in the lineup will force SA to put Parker on CP. if they don't, Crawford can abuse Parker.

Simple really. Hope VDN is reading this.

Manu is a beast. Love his game.

When he comes in, you put out best on ball defender, which is Bledsoe. CP can stay on Parker and Caron/Jamal/Barnes can cover either Danny Green or Kawhi Leonard.

I'm expecting spurs bombing 3's and duncan owning blake/dj and a loss by 13-17. Yes I'm negative. Just my opinion. Judging from what I've seen THISS year.

I expect us to defensive rebound a lot better! Diaw isn't as big, strong, and long as Thompson and Zeller. Varejao is much more active on the glass then Duncan. Matt Bonner is super soft. Hope DJ can box out Duncan. I'm concerned about that match up and the 3 point shooters of the Spurs.
