Game Preview

By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN

Posted Nov 14 2012 12:01AM

LeBron James' lowest scoring average is against the Los Angeles Clippers.

James struggled to score in last season's lone meeting against the Clippers heading into Wednesday night's matchup at Staples Center for the Miami Heat.

The three-time league MVP is averaging 23.1 points in 17 lifetime games versus Los Angeles (5-2). He missed 12 of 19 shots for 23 points in last season's 95-89 overtime loss.

James, however, had 13 rebounds and seven assists in that contest. The Clippers know his game is not based solely on scoring.

"You just have to make him work," Los Angeles forward Matt Barnes said. "He's such a talented player, the scoring numbers aren't always how he benefits his team the most. He controls the game through passing, through rebounding, through playing defense as well."

James was off to a slow start by his standards, averaging 21.9 points through his first seven games. He broke out with a season-high 38 - 32 after halftime - in Monday's 113-110 victory at Houston.

"It's the zone you hear about," James said. "Certain players talk about getting into the zone. I wish I could get into it more. But when you're in it, you know how it feels, you know everything you put up and how you're going is pretty good."

Miami (6-2) bounced back from a 104-86 loss at Memphis the night before. James only scored 20 in that contest before he turned in one of the most brilliant displays of the early season.

"I expected him to make every single shot he threw up," Chris Bosh said Monday. "I guess, after 30 points, you think everything is going in."

Bosh continued his strong play this season with 24 points and 10 rebounds. He's averaging 20.9 points - his highest in two-plus seasons since joining the Heat in 2010 after averaging at least 22.3 his last five seasons with Toronto.

"He's Mr. consistent," teammate Dwyane Wade said of Bosh. "He is a guy who does what he has to do and obviously on the offensive end he is multi-talented."

James is good friends with Clippers guard Chris Paul, a teammate at the London Olympics. They have split 12 meetings, with James averaging 25.0 points and 7.6 assists in those games and Paul 17.1 and 9.7, respectively, in those categories.

Paul is second in the league with 10.3 assists per game for a Clippers team that continues to showcase tremendous depth. Reserve guard Jamal Crawford leads the club with his 20.1 average.

Crawford is in a similar role as Heat veteran Ray Allen, who has been limited to 13 points over his last two games.

"This is a tough team you know with their Big 3 and then having Ray Allen coming off the bench," Barnes said. "They are a very talented and deep team. So we just have to stay focused and locked into the game plan and try to create the tempo we want to play at the defensive end."

Los Angeles won its third straight, 89-76 at home over Atlanta on Sunday. Blake Griffin led six Clippers in double figures with 16 points.

The Clippers' 9-2 home record against the Heat since 2001-02 is their second-best against any opponent. Miami, which is 2-1 on its current six-game road swing, has lost four straight on the road in this series.

Just throwing it around. clippers are 2 and 1 vs heat since heat became the heat we know now. both wins at home.

Now can anyone verify if we are only team with winning record vs them. thanks ahead of time.

i am looking forward to this game. the clips need to show the whole nba that staples is their house and that the chances of any team beating us are very slim (yes we lost to gs and cleveland, i know). i expect the clips to blitz the heat early and keep it going for 48 minutes.

If we can limit the Big 3, then we just need to play more D on their 3pt. shooters

i think our offense will be really good, DJ will overpower anyone they put against him and if u couple BG and DJ against any of their frontcourt we win by a big margin! I want CP3 to make their defense all day! JCross will be JCross! And I want the trio of ROnny, Hollins, and Barnes to be the BONEYARD of their offense!

We've got to take care of the ball. Two very similar teams... stifling defense and excellent in transition. Whoever has less TO's wins.

Let's start extending our division lead.

Blake needs to come out and open up a can of whoop ass on Battier. No way Battier can guard him in the post. DJ needs to own the paint and abuse the human Raptor.

The team is well rested and will win this game!

^ i agree. however im sure the double team will come so our perimeter players need to offer an outlet for griffin to kick out for the open shot. DJ might be the X factor for this game. he can have a huge game versus the undersized heat.

If they put Lebron on Blake on the defensive end, CP3 better pound the rock on the block with Blake. The more we wear LBJ down on D, the less efficient he'll be on offense. Let's let the other guys try and beat us since every time Lebron doesn't have a good game against us, they lose the game. I look for Bledsoe and Willie to secure the perimeter of any open 3's cause I feel like that will be what beats us. Miami thrives on TO's turned into points so I say if we keep our TO's in single digits tonight, we'll easily win by double digits. Oh, and please pound them inside and do not under any circumstances forget to rebound.

I just got back from Vegas 2 nights ago and unfortunately I only had $20 in my pocket when I was checking out so I wen't ahead and put it down for the Clippers to win it all at 12/1. They opened the year to win the Western Conference at 15/1 and has now gone down to 4/1. If Vegas believes in us, there's something special brewing in the air!!! Did I mention they have covered every spread in each 5 wins so far.

DJ and Blake should have big games against Miami's bigs. Griffin may get slowed down if Lebron guards him but that still leaves our our guys left over to dominate.

Would be nice to see some consistent minutes from Lamar Odom.

I think barnes will play big minutes tonight. We need him to guard lebron as much as possible. He is the only one with the size, speed, and attitude to check him.

Dwyane Wade (left foot sprain) is a game-time decision tonight for #Heat vs #Clippers. Didn't go through shootaround, will get X-ray later

the clips need to have defensive intensity from the get go and pound the ball inside. taking care of the ball and rotating to their shooters should help us win the game tonight. they may be the champs, but in their 2 losses, they have had trouble rotating to the opposing team's shooters and defending the paint.

Yo does Staples Center strictly uphold te 11x17 size limit for posters? I want to make a cardboard head of chris paul's son doing the blake face.

drop it to DJ at the post and pound it down low, but then again I can see the Heat respecting his game and double teaming, exploiting his deficiency of being able to pass under pressure. Guard the 3 point line and trust the bigs in guarding the paint, we can fair out and win the game.

I'm still waiting on Lamar to have a breakout game or at least put up 8-10 pts, a few assists and 8-10 rebounds. Wish that could happen tonight vs Heat. We'll need all 10 guys to beat these clowns.

Our 2nd unit should feast once again!!

Sucks to hear DWade may not play, I want to beat these guys when they're healthy. As far back as I can remember, we've always limited Wade, so not even sure if him being out is really that big a handicap for Miami. LBJ's 'lowest scoring average' is 23.1 points, that makes you go roll Both he and Bosh will be a force in the game.

If Wade doesn't play, nothing short of a convincing blowout win a la Spurs game last Wed will make me happy Smile Let's do this, Clips!

We play up to our competition, so I wouldn't worry about the guys not being ready. DWade not playing will be a difference maker, but I am more concerned about rotating out their shooters and not giving up too many threes. We need to dominate the glass and limit our turnovers.

This should be an easy win for us. If Wade plays maybe a little bit tougher, but a win nonetheless.

I say Clippers will win by 5 or more if wade plays. 10 or more if wade is out. Hey I am going to the game tonight. Who else is going? Maybe we can all meet at halftime?

Sucks I can't watch the game(work)....but will DVR it. Clips got this game, I think the starters will pretty much draw even, but our bench will be the deference once again and break the game wide open.

Isn't funny how mostly everyone on here was ragging on DJ. Now he is the key to this team.

I was always a supporter of DJ. The same way I am not of VDN. It's ironic that everyone is starting to figure out how important DJ is to the team...

Actually, plenty of people have supported DJ and almost everyone has said at some point that his performance will be key to what we can or can't achieve this year.

Personally, I'm just very pleased he's shown such growth this year... must be the coaching wink

Sports fans and amensia go together like beer and wings. The very embodiment of the "what have you done for me lately" type mentality. These days I see the folks jumping on or off the ship (you know who you all are) and I just roll my eyes and move on.

Yes they were... and it was because there was no way he was a $10,000,000 center when that contract was given to him. If you think he was, then you were very misguided.

The general consensus was that he was being paid according to what he'd grow into, and eventually may even turn out to be a bargain. On the evidence of his play so far (a very small sample size), that appears to be true, so all of the many, many people who believed it have just as much right to gloat as you do.

As far as DJ crediting Ociepka for his improvement... ever heard of a guy named Tex Winter?

As assistant coach, he conceived and implemented the triangle offense under Phil Jackson, yet Jackson gets the credit for 11 championships.

So by your own logic, either Vinny deserves some credit for DJ stepping up his game, or Phil Jackson is not the awesome coach that you believe him to be because his assistant ran the whole offense.
