Clippers-Spurs Preview

By JEFF BARTL Posted Nov 18 2012 10:49PM

The Los Angeles Clippers' history against the San Antonio Spurs entering this season wasn't exactly stellar, but Los Angeles proved in the last meeting it isn't the same team San Antonio has picked on in recent years.

The Clippers look to extend their five-game winning streak that started with a dominating win over the Spurs in Monday night's rematch in Texas.

San Antonio swept Los Angeles out of last season's playoffs and entered 2012-13 with a 52-6 record in the series - including the postseason - since December 1997.

The Clippers, though, routed the Spurs 106-84 on Nov. 7 at Staples Center behind 22 points and 10 rebounds from Blake Griffin and 20 points and 11 boards from DeAndre Jordan.

"We still remember what they did to us a couple months ago," Jordan said after that contest. "That was extra motivation."

The victory started a five-game run, during which Los Angeles (7-2) has won by an average of 15.2 points after beating Chicago 101-80 on Saturday.

Griffin scored a season-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Jamal Crawford added 22 points off the bench for the Clippers, who also will face Oklahoma City, Brooklyn and Atlanta during a four-game road trip.

"We'd be in really good shape right now if it was a 10-game season," said Chris Paul, who's second in the league with 10.2 assists per game. "We couldn't ask for more out of ourselves, but we just have to keep remembering that it's a long season. We have a big road trip coming up that starts in San Antonio, which is a tough place to play."

That's especially true for the Clippers, who have dropped 28 of the last 30 overall road meetings with a Spurs team that has won four of five since losing to Los Angeles.

San Antonio (8-2) improved to 4-1 at home with a 126-100 victory over Denver on Saturday, leading by as many as 32 points while setting a season high for points scored and going 16 of 27 from 3-point range.

"It's a lot of fun, for any team, when shots are going in," said Danny Green, who had 15 points. "We've had a couple of games where we've struggled. When shots are falling for you, it makes it a lot of fun, a lot easier."

The sizable lead allowed Tim Duncan and Tony Parker to rest in the fourth quarter after scoring 14 points apiece. Manu Ginobili scored a game-high 20 while hitting 5 of 7 from behind the arc.

Ginobili entered the game hitting only 37.3 percent of his shots.

"I'm very happy of course, and that's all I care about. I feel great that I had a good game," Ginobili said. "I needed it to build confidence and hopefully I keep building from here."

Coach Gregg Popovich said Los Angeles "kicked our (butts)" after the last meeting, but he saw good things for the team to build on in Saturday's win.

"They did a great job of finding the open man," Popovich said. "The ball movement was great and it allowed us to score."

Parker finished with four points on 2 of 7 shooting as the Spurs committed 20 turnovers and finished with a season low for points scored in the last meeting with the Clippers. http://www.nba.com/games/20121119/LACSAS/gameinfo.html

Big time test going against the Spurs on the road and the trip in general the starters will probably need to do more to make up for the bench probably coming down some on the road.

Remember, Leonard is out for a little while. That means they have one less player in the rotation. Stephen Jackson is starting.

I hope we haven't gotten too spoiled with playing at home. We've been so solid at both ends of the court, I hope we can keep up the same intensity on the road.

Chris Paul and the bigs needs to be more aggressive to win this game. Then the bench they just have to keep doing their thing.

im thinking butler may have a big game since kawhi leonard is out. the clips just need to keep the intensity up on defense. however, we also have to hit our open shots in order to counter the reffing bias the spurs always get at home. if we hit at least 10 3's we should be able to beat the spurs handidly. i also agree that cp3, bg and Dj have to play aggressively in order to break down the spurs in a fast tempo game.

I just hope we continue to execute our game plan. I hope CP3 dominates by scoring and, more importantly, distributing. I hope we continue to see BG's and DJ's arsenal grow. I want Butler to have a big game (maybe contribute on the boards tonight). Our defense is one of the best in the league, so we cannot let up on the road in that department.

If we lose tonight, I want it to be because the Spurs were on fire and making impossible shots...not because we didn't bring it.

It's very frustrating a close game though, the best lost games are the ones by like 6-10 when u know team played good but not their night!

It seems like every game so far has been the "true test." San Antonio will be more than ready. We gotta go in and attack at will.

The Spurs suck so there is alwaaaaays a change against them. But we typically struggle at San Antonio. We miss open shots, we turn the ball over, we take stupid shots, brick after brick and on the other end The Spurs dont miss, they get all the loose balls, all the calls....so a mixture of that will usually result in a loss. But since the Spurs suck I am going to be optimistic and say we sin

I have asked this before, but when will beating the Clippers be a true test for other teams? I think that time is already here, but when we lose, it doesn't seem to give any credibility to those who won, but instead it seems to discredit us. The media is so weird about the Clippers. When we are hot, they all want to act like they knew we were awesome before anyone else. I think if the Spurs win, that means they are still title contenders. We don't need to beat them to validate that point.

The Clipper will win tonight. Because they need to prove to rest of the league we are for real. I think we will go 3-1 only losing to the Hawks. Since the Hawks are the weakest of the teams and LA might relax on that night since they have 3 very tough opponents. I am stoked that NBA.com has ranked us number 2. That gives the Clips the motivation they need to prove they are better than the Grizzlies and are truly the best team in the NBA. It is awesome to see that the team we knocked out of the Playoffs last year is ranked #1 while we are ranked #2. When in reality we should be on top. Since we were the only team to beat them and we also did it convincingly. Clippers are the Best team in the NBA hands down currently. It's only scary to think about Billups and Hill that haven't even played yet and the fact that Lamar still is out of shape. Also lets not forget about Trey Thompkins. We are the best team hands down and the Clippers need to prove it tonight and put a scare into OKC and the rest of the league. Go Clips.

Also, watch out for Dejuan Blair. Blake can't sleep on him.

Blair gets a lot of loose balls, and is a dark horse player, because opponents are always trying to focus on timmy d, manu, and parker.

Key to this game is shutting down Tony Parker. We shut him down, we win this game easily!

CP and Bledsoe bottled him up the first time around. Gotta keep him in check again.

This. Plus at least contesting their perimeter shots. Pisses me off when they're swinging the ball and our guys jog out to meet them with their hands by their sides. I'd very much like this to be the first ever game against the Spurs where I don't scream "GET A f***** HAND UP!!!" at my TV.

vinny just said that crawfords back, hollins ankle, and caron butlers shoulder are all banged up but will play. im not too woried about ryan hollins because we still have ronny and everytime he plays he provides good minutes. im not really worried about butler since he plays limited minutes to begin with due to our depth but i hope j crossover is okay!
