Repped High Quality Post

So I could imagine like me, the majority of you are pretty disappointed with Lamar Odom's second stint with the Clippers so far. I understand your pain but don't give up on him quite yet guys, there's hope.

As a Clipper/Laker fan I've had the pleasure of following both L.A. Teams very closely. In my time watching Lamar Odom on the Lakers, there are 3 things I've come to understand about Lamar Odom.

  1. He's extremely inconsistent most of the time

  2. He's always an X-factor (meaning his level of play greatly influences his team's success or lack thereof)

  3. He plays his best basketball AFTER the All-Star break.

After speaking to Eric Pincus on twitter about Lamar's weight issues, I learned that coming into camp out of shape is typical of Lamar Odom. The only season in which he did not come into camp overweight happens to be the season he won 6th man of the year (due to his participation in the FIBA world championships)

With this information I came up with the Hypothesis that Lamar Odom's early season struggles can be attributed to the fact that he starts off each season out of shape (i'm a genius obviously). This hypothesis led me to another theory: Lamar Odom plays his best basketball after the All-Star break because by then he's worked himself into basketball shape (after all the practices and games he's played up to that point).

Last season was pretty tough on Lamar Odom for a number of reasons. He lost a family member, got traded to Dallas and had TV cameras following him 24/7. On top of all of that, he had to play in a condensed schedule that featured little to no practice time on a new team. With those circumstances in place, it's easy to see why Lamar would have a hard time fitting in and getting back into his groove.

This season Lamar has a full schedule and plenty of time to find his groove. While everybody wants him to return to 2011 Lamar or whatever, that's not what this team needs. We need Lamar to Rebound, Defend, make good decisions with the ball and hit the occasional 3 pointer like we know he can. We don't need him to be the leader of our second unit like the Lakers did in 2011. We just need him to be a solid contributor, who does all the little things that help a team win and we all know that he's fully capable of doing that.

Though Lamar has given us VERY little to be hopeful about so far, i'm sure most of us still have pretty high hopes for him. Remembering his outstanding defense on Zack Randolph in the Season Opener, gives me hope and confidence that Lamar Odom will be a valuable asset to our team come Playoff time.

For now we'll all have to bear the pain of watching his awful out of shape play, but we shouldn't give up hope. If Lamar stays true to his historical tendencies, then he should be firing on all cylinders after the all-star break. If not, we're a very good team without him, so either way we'll be a force to be reckoned with (though it would be nice to have an added weapon to our arsenal).

Great post. I understand your logic, and hopefully with that in mind vinny will keep lamar in for heavy minutes during blowouts to speed up that process. Saturdays game against chicago had amazing rotations. My only complaint was that vinny should have pulled blake out early and kept lamar in there to try and work that gummy bear back into shape. That game was a huge blowout and blake wasnt needed in that one. Hopefully vinny pays extra attention to lamar and spreads him across that bench. Until he gets back into shape lamar should be playing 40 minutes a night and those minutes should be spread at the 2, 3, 4 and 5 positions not because hes the only bench player out there but we need him active in the goal of shedding that weight

I honestly think he shouldn't travel with the team on this road trip and stay at home at work on conditioning.

Nice post. Repped.

Lamar is looking like an old man out there right now, but his court-vision looks sound. Good rebounding position, smart passes (when he completes them), defensive recognition... I tend to agree that he's only going to get better as the season goes on. The most encouraging sign to me is that even when he hasn't played well, he seems to be in good spirit... The more that guy is smiling, the better he'll be. If he's ever going to bounce back, it's going to be this year.

If he's been somewhat consistent at anything, it's eating up space down low and snagging defensive boards.

He's also showing more flashes of old Lamar. Today had a nice little drive and dish, and on another play he caught a laser pass from Barnes and converted the lefty layup.

The best way for him to get into basketball shape is playing with the team. So far, it hasn't hurt us much, but it's helped him a lot.

It's true that odom usually comes into camp out of shape and eventually works his way into bball shape. What worries meis his age. His fluctuating weight can't be good for his stamina in the long run much like an aging boxer who tries to lose massive amount of weights 2 months prior to the fight instead of maintaining his weight under control throughout the entire year.

Also, it reminds me of Shaq in his thirties where we saw massive decline from being dominant into being a liability

Yeah, Vinny's managed to win games even with "donating" Lamar minutes. He's starting to work his minutes now.

^^I wish he were- I just don't want him taking any jumpers right now. He is helping in other ways, but I find myself invariably yelling "No no... NO!" every time he shoots it from outside the paint.

I have hope. And I am truly one big supporter of Lamar. But as a professional athlete, especially one that should have come back with a chip on his shoulder, this is NOT ACCEPTABLE. I am not refuting anything that has been said, just stating the obvious: This man has no reason to come into trainning camp and start the season as he has done so far. He gets paid to play. HE GETS PAYED TO PLAY A GAME. Just let that sink in for a minute.

Anyways, I am hoping for the best for him individually. It is a joy to see #7 back in our colors... very nostalgic. But I am not expecting anything soon... The man was out clubbing with Matty B. few nights ago (friend took pics of him at the bar). I do not think he is too serious, and it may be an early season thing... but he needs to make the most of his situation. This is a very deep team, and if he slips up, other people will not allow LO to just waltz in and do his thing whenever he feels like it.

I am pretty angry. Hopeful, but impatient. It is go time. Every game counts. We need him in shape, and have needed him in shape for a while now. It is disappointing. He has NO excuses. Yet, I am still hopeful. It is a bad, nervous cycle.

i agree, but i dont mind him working on his shot if we are blowing teams out. but yeah he needs to be out there handling the ball from time to time, rebounding and giving great outlet passes.

I really hope Odom can play better.I agree we don't need him to be the leader of the 2nd unit,we just need him to play like we all know he can.I never doubted Odom's talent,I doubt his mental and physical health. You can still see glimpses of how well rounded he is.His defense has been decent in most of the games and he isn't afraid to handle the ball which is a good sign. His decision making has been inconsistent to this point but hopefully he can get it together. You can see what he wants to do but he just hasn't been able to put it all together.I like Odom as a person and think he is a great teammate and has a lot of experience to pass on to the younger guys but that alone doesn't warrant a $8 Mill contract.I really do hope he can focus and get into shape because he can become a huge part in the teams success.

Another thing I've noticed about Lamar throughout his career: He doesn't respond well to pressure. Whether it's being the first option on the Clippers, or the Second option with the Lakers, Lamar does best when less is expected of him.

Right now there's a lot of pressure on Lamar to be the Lamar of 2010, put on him by us, the fans, the media, and most importantly Lamar himself. His interview where he states "i think i'll be 2010 Lamar" is proof of that. To me, it seems like Lamar has lost so much confidence in his abilities, that it almost looks like he's shaking whenever he touches the ball. He's thinking way too much when he's out there and it's obvious. He needs to start having fun while he's on the floor, and I don't think there's a better cast of guys in the league than the group that's been assembled here on this team, to help Lamar get the confidence he needs to return to form.

Lamar has never been a particularly good 3pt shooter (31% career) so it would be unwise for any of us to expect that facet of his game to suddenly arise, but all the other skills he has are in there somewhere, biding their time, waiting for the right moment to come out and show themselves (playoff time!).

I know it sounds cliche and corny, but I truly believe that Lamar Odom is going to be a huge component in our Championship run this year. We just have to believe in him! It's our duty as fans to support our guys through thick and thin, which I know sounds pretty hypocritical coming from me seeing how I've bashed Willie Green and even Lamar in earlier posts, but this great start has really opened my eyes. As great as we've been so far, we haven't even scratched the surface of our potential. With that in mind, I realize how important it is that we show our guys as much love as possible.

This is the best team we've ever had, and the best chance we've ever had at winning a championship. With that said, the team has never needed us more, and without a doubt, Lamar Odom has never needed Clippernation more. So lets show him some support guys. Send him an encouraging tweet or cheer for him in the game. Hell, even start a "we want odom chant" if we're up by enough. Once we get this guy going we'll be an unstoppable force, so lets do our part to make it happen.

Worse case he comes off the books. I still wonder why he wouldn't work harder in the offseason of a contract year. Is all the Kardashian drama draining him that much?

Keaton... I agree. But it was his responsibility to come into training camp in peak physical shape. That is his job. Your post is mostly about morale... And I would be the first person to say we need to give him a boost. Unfortunately, even if we boost his morale we cant make him drop body fat and gain muscle...

I am forced to share a few images for a comp:

Trust me dude, I understand. The guy has basically done everything wrong so far and we're all frustrated with his lack of focus. But just because he hasn't done his part, doesn't mean we shouldn't do our part. This is our team, and he's apart of our team so we gotta do what we can to get him going. At least that's just how I look at it.

There are 2 players in the entire league who can play all 5 positions on the court, and we have one of them. You can't just give up on that kind of versatility. Not without doing your absolute best to get what you need out of him.

LO always comes into the season out of shape, with the one exception when he was competing in world competition during the summer. He's always been up to speed after the All-Star break. This is just how it goes with him.

I did not suggest not to do our part... I just stated it is WRONG for him to be unprofessional. Especially after the ish he pulled in Dallas. I still cheer him on wholeheartedly, but can't help supress the anger after he misses each shot short, or lacks hustle, or doesn't run, or gets outworked...

And I understand that he will get into better shape as the season progresses, but that is not the job description.

That is all I am saying.

First LO has definately lost body fat. You can begin to see his muscles. He he does what he does. It only matters how we can make him better. If we have to change his diaper and give him a pacifier DO IT. Legend has it that Chamberlain performed better if he got a pre-game BJ. I didn't make this up.

People are now considering us a serious contender. A functional LO and a Hillins that stops fouling will make us almost a shoe in for the WC finals

Hollins/Roni, LO/Roni, Barnes/Hill, Jamal, EBled. This is close to a PO team if we find a way to get LO going.

My only downer is that we can't have this whole squad come PO's Everybody has made a posivive contribution

Lamar looks like he's finally back to playing shape. At the very least his decision making has gotten a lot better and he looks more decisive with the ball. It's starting to look like he's getting his confidence back (though he may have just been confident because we were up by 30) and his rebounding is strong. He may even be the best rebounder on the team from the looks of it.

The good thing is Lamar Odom now has a PER of 4.8 after having a negative PER at the beginning of the season lol.

He has also been playing very good defense.

We are going up against a lot of easy teams this month so he will have plenty of time to improve before we face good teams.

i doubt it. hes not on the clock, we will keep him til the season is over. it will only be a matter of odom being resigned or just making him a free agent after this season. he is only slightly overweight now, as seen by his muscular definition of his arms and shoulders. plus, he is getting his explosiveness back. hes essentially taken the minutes hollins was getting. so that is a definite plus.

It's understandable that LO had some crazy losses in his life(son, best friend, etc) but basketballwise, if LO had the heart of someone like Kobe or Paul, he would've been a top 5 player for most of his career. He can shoot, defend, dribble, rebound, play defense, drive, back to the basket, face up, size and length. He's in my mind the most talented player overall on the Clippers. But he's lazy and has no drive.
