Clippers-Thunder Preview

By JEFF MEZYDLO Posted Nov 20 2012 8:12PM

A big reason for the Los Angeles Clippers' strong start has been their ability to beat some of the NBA's other top teams.

The visiting Clippers will need to pass another major test when they try to win seven in a row for the first time in 21 years Wednesday night against the surging Oklahoma City Thunder.

Los Angeles (8-2) opened the season with victories over Western Conference co-leader Memphis and the rival Lakers. After dropping consecutive home games to Golden State and Cleveland, the Clippers have beaten Miami once and San Antonio twice during their current run.

Chris Paul had 19 points and hit a 10-foot jumper with 24.6 seconds left to help Los Angeles beat the Spurs 92-87 on Monday in the opener of a challenging four-game trip that includes stops in Brooklyn and Atlanta. The Clippers are 3-0 away from home.

"It's a good win, a good road win, but at the same time the season is still very young and we've still got a lot of road games left to play," forward Blake Griffin told the Clippers' official website.

In position to win seven straight for the first time since an eight-game run Nov. 30-Dec. 15, 1991, the Clippers share the West lead because of some strong overall play. Los Angeles leads the conference in shooting at 49.2 percent and is second in scoring with 101.5 points per game. It's tied for second in the West giving up an average of 92.6 points but believes it can play better defensively.

"We know we're a handful on the offensive end," reserve forward Matt Barnes said. "If we can start controlling the defensive end, that's when we're really going to start winning games and making an imprint in this league. We have the talent to do it. We have the athleticism to do it. It's just the heart and hunger to do it."

Oklahoma City averaged 87.5 points and shot 39.2 percent while dropping the final two meetings with Los Angeles last season.

The Thunder (8-3), who lost three of four to the Clippers in 2011-12, enter this contest winners of two straight and seven of eight. Oklahoma City has averaged 104.3 points and shot 49.4 percent over those eight contests.

Kevin Durant posted his first career triple-double with 25 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists while Russell Westbrook scored 30 and Kevin Martin added 23 off the bench in Sunday's 119-109 win over Golden State.

Durant's scoring average is down from last season's 28.0 to 24.5, but he's averaging career highs of 10.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists. He's averaged 28.7 points, 10.7 boards and 6.7 assists in the last three games.

"There's going to be nights where I have to score 30. There's going to be nights where I have to have seven or eight assists," Durant said. "So, I'm just trying to be an all-around player and just continue to help my team win."

Griffin has averaged 20.7 points in the last three games but has been held to 23 on 9-of-26 shooting (34.6 percent) in the last two at Oklahoma City.

There is sooooooo much going into this game.

  • We lose and we're 3rd or 4th in the west
  • We win, we have a 7 game winning streak for the first time in 21 years.
  • We win, it will solidify us as a legit title contending team.
  • We've been successful against the Thunder over the years and we can't let make us complacent. The Clippers have to treat this game like they treated the games against the Grizz, Spurs, and Heat.
  • I live in Denver with no NBALP so it's one of the few games I get to watch at my favorite sports bar and I want to leave that bar excited and drunk.

Let's do this, Clippers.

I am not worried about Brooklyn at all. They are only the second best team in NY like the Lakers are the second best team in LA.

If we can beat the Thunder we will be in a very good spot at making a run for 1st seed in the West(well maintaining it anyway).

We got this. Barnes on Durant, is better than Butler on Durant. Westbrick will shoot them out the game or go on fire, I predict the former. We play and match well versus athletic teams.

Possibly, the only possible loss in that road trip would be okc. With the addition on Kevin Martin who knows how they match up against us. If they still had harden I would say we would beat them without a doubt, but we shall find out tonight

We always match up well against the Thunder. I think Westbrook will have an off night with CP3 and Bled harassing him. Crawford is due for a big one and I think DJ and Blake have an advantage over the Thunder bigs. We definitely have a chance to win EVERY game we play this season. There will be losses, but they will not be the result of being less talented. That is for sure. I love that Blake is diving on loose balls and making the extra effort. I wish he would attack the rim a little more like he did in his rookie season, but I am glad that his jumper is falling.

Griffin's been having big nights, you gotta remember he plays only 30 mins a game, he's producing pretty big, and Butler is listed as a day to day, probably will play in the OKC game cause we have no one else at the sf position!

Barnes is beastinnnn, and YOU WANT TO RISK INJURY? Butler has a better shot than barnes, that's why he is in the starting lineup to SPREAD the floor! Let him play just 10 minutes, and than have Barnes just come in there and harrass everyone!

We need strong rebounding from the 3-spot. Durant's weak arse getting 10+ boards a game is unacceptable. And don't sleep on Sefalosha... he's finally a reliable shooter.

I don't get how we were PK with the reigning champs, but after our current streak, we're +4 against two teams that lost in the West.

I mean, I get that match-ups make the game, but you gotta give respect where respect is due.

We never win in Portland either but it happens,,but as you said we will see.

All I know is this game will be a MAJOR test and we do have a couple of players with boo-boos. The thing with this team is ability is no longer a question,,it's the unknowns like is the ref angry at DTS that night, did everyone have a good night in the hotel, did Lamar keep them up with his snacking?

Butler should be resting, but its not like Barnes is at full strength either. Barnes has a slight issue with one of his fingers. One should be resting, hopefully Butler, and once he gets healthy let Barnes get some R & R

You see how self contradictory this is right? How are we risking injury by giving him the night off? Does he have some kind of trouble with folding chairs that I am unaware of? We have the flexibility to keep Barnes at the same number of minutes. Jamal can play the three if need be. I love when we go with Chris, Bled, JCross, Blake, and DJ.

I like to watch the games in the afternoon after work here, as they are during the night in the Netherlands. This never used to be a problem as there is barely any basketball news over here, so i can avoid the scores easy. The only 3 or 4 basketball headlines in the local news so far this season where all about the clippers... "lakers lose" "spurs lose" "grizzlies lose"... im hoping i find out the score before i can watch again tommorrow :p

As of right now, we're very short on SF so I say play Butler in limited minutes and Barnes in 30 minutes. that why Butler still have Thanksgiving to heal. WE could always go three guard line up with Paul, Bledsoe, and Crawford and have Barnes at a 4 and Griffin for 5 for the last quarter.

just thought of something, Now is the time to make our starters play heavy minutes, mainly CP3, we leave him with Bled at the 2 and JCross at the 3 when Barnes needs to rest! And than insert Barnes with Bled at the 1 and JCross at the 2, it's gonna be a nice juggle of minutes!

That's really not a bad idea, I would like to see Odom play starter minutes all though he hasn't earned it yet, and we are low on SF's anyway.

PG - CP3 SG - Willie SF - Blake PF - Tuiaf or Odom C - DJ

I think this game will come down to how well we rebound. With Kevin Durant gobbling up everything that comes off the rim, Blake and DJ are really going to have to step up their effort in that area.

I'm also hoping for a good showing from Lamar Odom tonight. If Caron Butler is out, that will leave us with Matt Barnes as the primary defender on KD, and that's not simple task for any one man. Lamar's length and defensive ability could be greatly used against KD in this game even if it's just for limited minutes. I think he could be a game changer in this game if the situation requires and he's up to the challenge.

Kevin Martin will also be a tough cover with Butler out. It'll be interesting to see how Vinny deals with the matchup situations but as long as we're strong on the defensive boards, I think this is an easier win than most of us would expect.

butler is out and matt barnes will start at the 3. im not worried about this i actually prefer butler sitting out. i'd love to see a line up of cp, jamal, odom, griffin, and deandre. now that butler is out we should see more PT for lamar. i hope he doesn't f*ck up
