Clippers Vs. Kings Game Preview

By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN

Posted Dec 01 2012 2:07AM

Blake Griffin has dominated DeMarcus Cousins in their matchups, powering a season sweep by the Los Angeles Clippers last season.

The power forwards meet for the first time this season Saturday night when Griffin and the Clippers try to drop Cousins' Kings to 0-6 on the road.

Los Angeles (9-6) is 6-1 against Sacramento (4-11) over the last two seasons since Cousins came into the league. Griffin is averaging 20.6 points on 60.2 percent shooting to go with 12.0 rebounds per game in those meetings while Cousins is averaging 11.0 points, 9.0 boards and shooting 35.7 percent.

Cousins' scoring average against the Clippers is his worst against any Western Conference foe. He grew so frustrated after fouling out in 18 minutes in a 93-85 home loss to Los Angeles on April 5 that he called Griffin an "actor." Two days later, Griffin had 27 points and 14 rebounds in a 109-94 home win over Sacramento.

The Clippers went 3-0 against the Kings in 2011-12.

While the duel inside could prove decisive, Los Angeles figures to have an advantage on the perimeter if Sacramento guard Tyreke Evans misses a second straight game.

Evans sat out Friday due to a bruised left knee in a 97-92 home defeat to Indiana. He is averaging a career-low 14.9 points, but had netted 21.0 per game over his last five outings.

His absence could make it easier for Chris Paul, who had 23 points and 11 assists in Wednesday's 101-95 home win over Minnesota. The Clippers ended a season-high four-game losing streak.

The game marked the season debut for Chauncey Billups, who started and had seven points and three assists in 19 minutes in his first action since Feb. 6 after recovering from a torn left Achilles tendon.

"Now that I'm back, I look forward to regaining my old form," he told the Clippers' official website. "And I'm going to be very patient with that. Just me being back is a success and a blessing, so I'm going to be happy with that until everything else kind of comes around."

Clippers leading scorer Jamal Crawford is only averaging 11.5 points on 32.5 percent shooting in his last four games.

"I find myself in the corner just waiting on the action, when I have to go make the action happen," Crawford said. "That's who I am and that's what I'll get back to doing.

Griffin had 18 points and six boards Wednesday as he bounced back from a season-low, four-point effort two nights earlier against New Orleans.

Cousins, meanwhile, had 19 points and 16 rebounds Friday for his first double-double in six games. The big man, however, struggled to make 5 of 17 shots, and is shooting 42.0 percent on the season.

"Yes, he forced too many shots tonight," Kings coach Keith Smart said of Cousins. "He needs to start taking those shots that are available."

The Kings are one game worse than their record after 15 games last season and enduring their worst road start since going 0-9 to begin 2007-08.

"I just knew our team could be better and much further along than where we are right now," Smart said. "I am very disappointed."

Great job by Denver getting beaten by the two teams breathing down our neck in the division (with one of them tied with us). Useless pricks.

The kings poor record means nothing. They gave the flakers a bully beatdown. Which i like Razz but not 4 us.

Clippers fault for playing with no heart or urgency. Now the Warriors jumped us and Lakers are right on our heels.

^well they did (except for the brooklyn and hawks game), but its really an uphill battle when u are trying to play against 8 players instead of 5. regardless, the clips will pick it up. they are too talented to be in a funk for long. the minny game was the start of a lengthy win streak

I am much more worried about the OKC, Spurs, and Grizzlies than the Lakers (oh wow they finally got to .500 with a weak strength of schedule) or the GSW.

Keep in mind we had the strongest SOS in the nba so far but have a weak stretch ahead.

You guys know vs playoff teams last year we are 7-2 this season right? It's the non playoff teams and the lottery teams that have given us the most problems. Also we didn't look any better at home vs the very very shorthanded Wolves the other night than we did on the road.

Bottom line is PLEASE put away the confidence about us winning at home or beating bad teams because neither are things we should be confident about considering the Clippers team we have seen the last week and a half. I wouldn't be surprised if we lose 5 of the next 10 at home unless the team really wakes up. We shouldn't be beating very short teams like the Wolves at home by less than 10 points, period.

Weird thing is vs the Wolves it almost felt like a loss. If they had just one of their other key pieces healthy or hit a couple more wide open 3's we lose. I need to see another winning streak to fwel good about this recent stretch.

Yeah, 86. In the last game, we got the result we wanted, but not the performance.

lets be honest, who would have thought that the hornets would hit 16 3's and overcome 9 threes made by butler. the wolves game only was close because the refs wanted it to be. they shot below 35 percent, yet they were still in it. yeah some people will say that we gave up many boards, but that 3rd quarter was a joke from the refs. they shot if im not mistaken 17 fts. klove had 11 by himself. the point i make is that if the clips dont shoot the lights out, we can forget about blowing out teams, even if they are shorthanded because the f****n refs will find a way to keep it close. i know i will hear the bs argument that the refs dont influence the game, but to those people, i will tell them, watch a flaker, spurs, heat, okc game and u will see the reffing be much different than the reffing we get, even at home

It always happens though so why would I believe it's a one time deal? Cleveland, GS AND Hornets all torched us from deep in this fashion. Even last year teams consistently torched us. It's not a fluke game, it's crappy defense.

One of my dozens of Lakersfan friends was so confident Denver would have a better record than us, we bet $20 on it. Easy money. Looking ahead at our schedule, i feel like the next 19 or so games is a pretty friendly stretch in terms of opponent talent level, we could put together a nice run if we find some consistency.

like i said before, it is hard to play d when the f****n vultures aka the refs are just looking for anything to call the clips do to blow the whistle. you cant play hard d because u will get a foul called on u. i do agree that at times our guys are lackadaisical in getting to the shooter. the only guy i seen rush the shooter is odom. no one else. so u can definately make the case that the d is a combination of lack of effort and conditioning from the refs

during that game the lead changed numerous times, and you are correct in stating that if some of those timberwolf threes would have gone in we lose that game. Sure the clippers pulled out a win but nowhere in that game did we display any ability to correct our biggest problem and defend against the three..youre right that game did feel like a loss and the way we didnt appear to correct our biggest problem shows me that teams are catching on ....tonight has the potential to be close and quite possibly even be a loss if the team doesnt stop the three

Kings are a much more explosive offense than the Wolves too. Their players like Jimmer, Thornton, Tyreke, Isiah ate us alive from 3 last year even though we swept them.

Get used to the open 3's, because it's going to keep happening with this coaching staff.

^ Yup. Until Vinny's thumbs get fast enough on that xbox controller that makes the players close out their man, we're in for more of the same. roll

Actually, rebounding is still our biggest problem... we sit 24th with a negative differential. A lot of those 3's are coming on second chances.

But the Twolves are the worst 3pt shooting team.

I bet the Heat fans are saying the same thing after barely winning against the Spurs' D league team. These types of games happen a lot more often than people think.

Kings made their little run but the Clippers are playing the RIGHT way for first time in a while. They are running the offense through the bigs and feeding off of that.
