Clippers Vs. Jazz Game Preview

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD

Posted Dec 03 2012 12:48AM

While Chauncey Billups hasn't put up huge numbers, his presence appears to have given the Los Angeles Clippers a bit of a boost.

The Clippers look to win their third straight game with the five-time All-Star back in the lineup Monday night when they visit the Utah Jazz, who will try for their 13th consecutive regular-season win at home.

Billups has played less than 20 minutes in each of his two starts since recovering from a torn left Achilles tendon that sidelined him for the final 38 games of last season and the first 14 this season.

However, Los Angeles, which had lost four straight before Billups' debut Wednesday, defeated Sacramento 116-81 on Saturday for its second straight win with him back in the lineup.

Billups had six points Saturday - he finished with seven three days earlier - but the Clippers (10-6) outscored the Kings 41-22 while he was on the court.

"I'm not going to take a long time getting adjusted to the other players," Billups said.

The Clippers' bench provided a big lift against Sacramento. Jamal Crawford, Eric Bledsoe and Matt Barnes combined for 43 points, leading seven players in double digits.

Los Angeles ranks fourth in the NBA in bench scoring at 40.1 points per game, and Crawford is the only player to lead his team in scoring (17.5) despite coming off the bench in every game.

"It's a long season, and it's important to get the production out of your starters and your bench," said Barnes, who finished with 12 points.

Blake Griffin has only averaged 12.0 points in the Clippers' last three games, but perhaps he'll put up better numbers in Utah. Griffin has averaged 24.3 points and 12.7 rebounds in six career games against the Jazz (9-9).

The Clippers, seventh in the NBA in scoring (100.6 points per game), finished with a season-high total while shooting 54.7 percent from the field and 12 of 24 from beyond the arc on Saturday.

That doesn't bode well for a Jazz team that allowed Houston to shoot 55.4 percent and score 39 fourth-quarter points Saturday in a 124-116 road loss.

The Jazz, who dropped the last two games of a three-game road trip, have allowed five of their last six opponents to reach 100 points.

"Usually, (defense) is something that all of us from top to bottom take pride in ... and lately we haven't been getting stops," guard Randy Foye told the team's official website.

The Jazz fared better offensively, shooting a season-high 51.1 percent against the Rockets - including a 11 of 20 effort from 3-point range. Gordon Hayward finished with 21 points, while Al Jefferson and Foye each scored 20.

Jefferson, seventh in the NBA at 10.5 rebounds per game, averaged 21.0 points and 9.7 rebounds in the three games against the Clippers last season.

Billups missed 16 of the 20 shots he took in two meetings against the Jazz in 2011-12, but Utah had no answers for Chris Paul. The All-NBA first teamer averaged 30.0 points and shot 65.8 percent in two games in the series, with the Clippers losing by 29 in Salt Lake City in the contest he missed with a left hamstring strain.

This time, Paul will be going head-to-head with the point guard who backed him up for the last season and a half. Mo Williams has averaged 13.9 points and 6.5 assists while starting all 14 games he's been available since joining the Jazz.

Utah may be forced to go without a pair of key components in this meeting, though. Starting forward Marvin Williams (concussion) has missed the past two games and reserve Derrick Favors (strained arch) sat out Saturday, though both could return Monday.

The Jazz are looking for their first 7-0 home start since 2006-07.

This game scares me, we have to limit our turnovers or else they will run us out of the building.

We won two games against the worst in the western conference. The timing of these games was perfect because it gave us time to integrate Chauncey back into the lineup. Now we are going to measure how well we can do against better oposition

Seeding this early in the season doesn't determine how good a team is. The Clippers are SUPERIOR to the Jazz so yes it would be playing down to them if we lose.

Paul Milsap is the one that concerns me for this game. If we can find a way to limit his production I think we'll be good this game.

If Griffin can light it up like last game we'll be fine, we need our bigs to show up BIG, Our bench looks like they're back, so they'll be important!

we need to impose our bigs on them. dj needs to be on his game versus jefferson. millsap always stuggles with griffin. plus if mo plays, cp3 should torch him. what im concerned about is kanter and favors. our bench will need to play physically in order to avoid getting killed on the glass by those 2. ball rotation and smart basketball should carry us to a win tomorrow night but the jazz will bring it, especially at home.

These guys are so small up front. Playing the Jazz always makes me nervous though cause we have won what like twice all time over there? SMH.

Oh and Al Jefferson always shoots like 100% against us Sad

If we play our best, we should beat the Jazz, even on the road. Hopefully, someone has communicted to the team that the Jazz are undefeated at home, so they'll be extra motivated. That seems to be kind of challenge CP likes. Also, I can't imagine the team wants to get beat by a team that prominently features two guys we let go in Mo and Foye.

This will be a fun game to watch. Jazz are 6-0 at home. Clippers had a ton of highlights last time they were there.

Repped High Quality Post

Key to the game was shown all on this video. CP3 has to be aggressive and we gotta pick and roll them to death.

When was the last time you saw a CP3-Blake pick and roll for a lob or easy layup? It seems like all they do now is pick and pop.

Also, CP3 had 30+ points this game. Has anyone even score 30+ for our team this year other than last week when Butler went nuts?

This is going to be a tough game obviously. They're a good rebounding team, especially at home. Please hit the boards hard tonight boys.

Didn't Crawford have 30 in an game early this season? Anyway, I think it's good we can win without any one particular player having a huge scoring game. I really like that we have great balance.

I saw that coming. That's why I was looking forward to the game all day. The Lakers aren't that good. Plus, they win one, lose one or more games. Rinse and repeat. lol

I want to see a big game from DJ and Blake, CP3 needs to recognize that Blake wants to fill his stat sheet a little bit.

The Jazz bigs are good and getting better as Kanter progresses. Expect Mo to have a big game. Love to see a win but wont be upset with a loss in a competitive game. All I ask is that the officials call it fairly, which seems to be tough to get in Utah. Prime place in the NBA that I see road teams get consistently hosed.

The starters are a tad undersized but the bench bigs are ... big. A talented back 7' center in Kanter, and a PF that is like 6'10" in Cousins- these guys just wear on you. They can afford to go a little small with the starters because the SG is so big, like 6'8" or so I think.

They just have waves on guys that are between 6'8' and 6'10' and crash the boards. If anything this is a game for Lamar to step up for.

Our free throw shooting could be bad tonight from DJ and Blake because of their fans. Those fans really pump that place up.

If Dj can remember the pretty good D he played on AJ during the preseason he will be fine.

This is a good test for Blake. He should be able to impose his will in this game if he is decisive.

I hope that Vinny learned some things about his rotattions concerning bledsoe and cp3. Bled should come in earlier than the 2nd quarter and sometime in the 3rd. If that is with cp3 or not he should be getting more minutes and coming in earlier. A 3 guard lineup with cp3 bled, and crawford, could be utilized tonite and look forward to see if Vinny takes advantage of some of the defensive advantages we could have tonight...including Odom.

He's done literally NOTHING right. Going for hook shots right on top of 2-3 defenders... fumbling the ball every catch. Allowing his man to get 3 wide open dunks. I mean damn dude wake the hell up.
