(Article written by Tim McMahon.)

DALLAS -- Dallas Mavericks center Chris Kaman, who spent the first eight years of his NBA career with the Los Angeles Clippers, believes his former team can go from "the worst possible franchise in the NBA and all of sports history" to one of the best.

"If (Donald) Sterling sold the team, they might be able to," Kaman quipped Tuesday before boarding the Mavs' team flight to Los Angeles for his first road game against his former team.

In all seriousness, Kaman believes that Sterling changing his notoriously cheap ways has given the Clippers a chance to have great success. Kaman cited the construction of the Clippers' practice facility and the trade for Chris Paul, along with the free agency acquisitions of Caron Butler and Jamal Crawford as evidence that Sterling is now willing to spend money to build a winner.

"The truth of the thing is Sterling, when I was there my first few, four to six years, he was tight with everything," said Kaman, who was part of the package the Clippers sent to the New Orleans Hornets before last season to land Paul. "He didn't want to spend the money. I think as he's getting older, he's realizing, 'Hey, I don't know how much time I have left' -- or whatever it is -- 'I'm older.' You can't win in the grave.

"No, I'm serious. I think he's almost 80 years old. I think he's seeing, 'Hey, I'm getting older, I'm not getting any younger, I want to win,' so he's putting the money out. ... I think he's saying, 'Hey, I've got to spend more money. I want to get a winning franchise going.' And that's what he's done."

Paul led the Clippers to the second round of the playoffs last season, matching the franchise's most successful postseason run in 2005-06, when Kaman and fellow Mavs newcomer Elton Brand formed a formidable frontcourt duo in L.A. The Clippers are 11-6 entering Wednesday night's game against the Mavs on ESPN.

"From the worst possible franchise in the NBA and all of sports history -- that was what they got rated, one of the worst sports franchises ever -- to one of the top ones. I think that's possible," said Kaman, who signed a one-year deal with Dallas and is averaging 13.6 points and 6.9 rebounds this season. "They're in L.A. They've got the market, they've got the sponsors, they've got the people, they've got the fans. They're getting the players. It's getting there."

Kaman calls the deal that sent him to the Hornets along with guard Eric Gordon, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and a first-round pick that ended up being guard Austin Rivers in exchange for Paul "an awesome trade" for the Clippers.

That deal gave the Clippers an MVP candidate to pair with young All-Star power forward Blake Griffin, whom Kaman believes is capable of developing into a superstar due to Griffin's rare athleticism and work ethic. The key for the Clippers will be keeping Paul, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, with the Mavs among the teams who hope to sign him.

"You see since they picked him up, all the guys wanted to be there," Kaman said. "Before, nobody wanted to be there."

Chris Clumsy Kaman should be forever grateful to the Clippers and be happy that Donald over paid for his mediocre services.

I'm glad he's gone, I've always felt like he was more worried about his numbers than wins.

Nothing kaman said really offends me, he's right about Sterling and he gave us our well deserved credit. Kaman is a knucklehead though.

^ Yeah nothing really offended me either but I've always thought Kaman wasn't a good team player. Oh, and he does miss quite a few easy lay ups every game that just make you cringe.

this is the first time ever ive heard someone say kaman was all about padding his stats. the only thing he ever did was mention to the media that he thought he was of starter-quality in the NBA.

He's probably my favorite Clipper personality of all-time but probably my least favorite Clipper player, he's just so clumsy.

^ C'mon ekker, even though you are a huge Chris Kaman fan you can't deny the fact that he pulled some Drew Gooden games and 'padded them stats'.

I remember when Kaman found out he didn't make the all star team he got all butthurt and had a streak of bad games, then he ended up making it due to someone getting injured then he went back to his clumsy ball hogging ways.

Kaman is a nice guy, I like how he's not mad at us for trading him, but I'm glad we got rid of him, cause he was always injured.

Kaman seems to be spot on with his assessment. Wouldn't mind having him back to end out his career where it started. The thing i remember most about Kaman is his 4th of July video with the ton of fireworks at his house in Michigan. Seems like he would be an entertaining guy to hang out with.

Kaman is one of those players that you just have to give him credit where it is due. That boy is "white boy good" lol. I have always liked Kaman, I am a country boy, and so is he, it's almost mandatory that I like him. You also have to realize that he was half of our legit scoring options at the time, and he did what he had to do. He is having a career season in Dallas, and I am happy for him. Would not mind one bit having him here to back up DJ.

@Clipper*Joe- DJ is a boss

I will always have a place in my heart for Kaman. He spoke the truth everytime he was interviewed. I'd have no problem having him back one day. He'd make an awesome backup center for us. He's basically reciting the Cinderella/Mr. Scrooge story of the Clippers rising up from the dirt to the top of the league.

During his time with us, CK was a top 3 center in the league. At times it was painful to watch him but there was definitely more good than bad. He and EB at least gave us a chance to compete. I overrated them back then but I was blinded by my love for the team...lol

^ Yeah, top-3 is a reach.

Caveman stepped up when Brand went down and I'll always love him for that, but he should never be the best player on any team.

Keeping it real is one thing, but sometimes it's more professional just to keep your mouth shut.

not top 3, but he had the skill set to be that if he only controlled the aloof way he played at times. he was top 5 during his all star year. too bad he could never stay healthy and maintain consistency

True That. If Chris came back to end his career with us as the backup C for us, that would be SICK. His quotes about Donald Sterling are RIGHT ON. You can't take anything with you when you die so if you want to win, sometimes, you have to SPEND, at least UP TO The luxury tax. He's still a stingy businessman so I don't see him going over the luxury tax by much, which is completely understandable. But for SO LONG, he would be so far UNDER the luxury tax because he was still making money. But now he realizes there are some things that are MUCH MORE VALUABLE, and PRICELESS than owning material possessions, hosting parties where everyone is wearing white, loosely fitted clothes, and being a racist, slumlord.

He knows now, you gotta spend to WIN. and the more we WIN, I believe the more he will spend. Not MUCH more, its still Donald Sterling.

But that's why this year is so important and one of the greatest years we've ever had and why we're all SO AMPED UP. We've been suffering for so long. No matter what happens at the end of this season, WE DESERVE TO ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY GAME THIS SEASON. AND OUR FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT. BRIGHTER THAN EVER!

THIS IS A DOPE CLIPPER TEAM. DOPE and DEEP. L.O. is finally coming around and Grant Hill isn't even in the lineup. L.O. can be a BEAST when his mind is right and HILL Can be a stopper.

CLIPPER NATION.

Kaman was a good offensive player. He had an amazing hook shot. Of course he could be a very mercurial player, had some conditioning issues, and because of that he was viewed as expendable. While I appreciate the things he did here his loss ushered in the start of the chris paul era. Things worked out for the best

Always loved Kaman but he got injured too much and didn't seem to care at times. I'd like him to come back here one day. He really deserves to have that #35 retired here.

I agree. One Player is actually being guarded while the other player has a clear shot at the rim, hence the term, FREE throw.

I'm surprised you are trying to defend that.

This thread is funny... And Kaman was always good, just always overrated and overpaid. Not top 3 good (lol), but good enough to have he starting spot at C. Some people (including myself) would have like to have seen better consistency.

Having said that I would take DJ over Kaman nine out of ten times on any given hypothetical team.

I think the good thing about our team was that DJ was always a threat to kaman so the competotion brought out the best in both. Kamam was a better offensive player by a long mile, but consistency and healthy were always issues for him...it was a good 1-2combo...we will never see that again
