If I was Elgin Baylor i would draft Russell Westbrook the PG out of UCLA as i belive he will be the steal in this years draft like AL Thornton was last year. At UCLA he was playing 2nd fiddel to Collinson and when he was injured Westbrook took control off the team and i think he is maybe similar to Baron Davis. My Original choice was OJ Mayo but he wont drop to 7th pick so Westbrook the best choice.
And maybe we should trade Maggette or Cuttino mobley and our 2nd round pick for another lotter just say 8th or 9th and try draft Anthony Randolph or Kevin Love who could be out future PF and can learn from Elton Brand. |

| He is not Davis, Davis was a team leader since high school and could shoot. The only prob with him was his knees, everyone knew that he would be great if healthy. Westbrook os a good pick but lets see what Miami does before we say Westbrook over Mayo, who I now think may be as good as he was hyped up to be. |

| Ok, I know I'm probably going to killed for this by some of my fellow forum contributers but, what the hell... We're most likely not going to get a shot at Mayo anyway, but doesn't the spectre of that accepting money in high school fiasco throw up any red flags for anyone? I understand "innocent until proven guilty", but for the sake of arguement let's say that there's at least some fire here with all the smoke. The original knock against him was that "priviledged" label resulting from his being exaultled as a player practically from birth. Admittedly that's not his fault, that's just unfortunately the way things are, but nevertheless the idea that he would then deign to accept cash and sundries from an adoring and expectant agent/business conglomerate doesn't seem that far fetched does it? That being the case, it could suggest a way of thinking on his part, an "I deserve this because I'm ME" attitude that also might help explain his freshman year. Sure, there were lots of "he's changed, he performed within the system" platitudes, but it did seem that there were a ton of times when he fired off a little early in shot clock, or forced shots against the double team. And don't tell me how awesome his freshman year was because his assist to turnover ratio was 3.3 to 3.5 on the downside, compared to say Westbrook's 4.3 to 2.5, so he wasn't all that. I'm not saying that Mayo is untalented, that would be idiotic, but I have to wonder at his attitude and how it will translate to the pro game. The league has always had players who had marvelous stats that didn't win, and I'm not talking about didn't win championships, (like Sir Charles) or didn't win because of who they played with (say for example until recently KG), I mean didn't win because they didn't "get" it... think Stevie "Franchise" Francis or Stephan "Starbury" Marbury et al. These are truly great players that for whatever reason will possibly (note I say possibly, there's always hope) never be known as winners or guys who understood the team concept. To me, so far this is how Mayo comes off. At least if I was the GM that was going to sign him for a cool three or four mil plus and expect him to contribute hugely to making my team a winning franchise, that would be my concern. Now, I could be dead wrong, of course... but judging from what has gone before, is it possibly a concept worth considering? |

| That's exactly it DWB...the risk of him being a Steve Francis or Stephon Marbury is much higher than the chance of him being Steve Nash or Magic Johnson. I'd rather draft a guy who is hungry to win and is proven to be teachable and work as a team (aka Westbrook) than a guy who has talent, but seemingly little push to be great (other than the motives of some selfish stardom). If he keeps his head on straight, he may end up like a Baron Davis or Gilbert Arenas, which isnt all bad, but as you can see....Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler werent enough to help Arenas get over the top with Washington, and Stephen Jackson and Monta Ellis werent enough to help Davis get over the top in Golden State. Both are quality scorers, but arent strong enough leaders to pull their teams over the hump. Tony Parker makes his team better, Chris Paul makes his team better. Steve Nash makes his team better. Deron Williams makes his team better. We need to look for the next one in that line. |

| I completely agree with everything you guys are saying. My only things is, I dont really think the Clippers are in the position right now to deny a player like OJ Mayo if he falls into our laps. Its not likely going to happen, but just thinking hypothetically. The Clippers need help. And what they really need is a superstar. Is OJ Mayo going to be one? I dont know, but he's got a pretty good shot. Maybe some of his character issues could be problematic if you are a team like the Spurs or Lakers or Suns. But the Clippers could only gain if a player like OJ Mayo becomes a star. They would win more games, get more media attention, which leads to more fans and revenues which then leads to Sterling spending more money to make the team better. If OJ by the grace of god is available at 7 you have to pick him up and worry another time about the fact that he possibly took gifts from his agent while in college. I dont think the Clippers history allows them to say, yeah hes a great player but we're gonna pass and take the has a lot of potential guy. |

| If Mayo is available, I would take him. He won't be though. However, it is really important to find a player with good character and I would really evaluate that big time, and almost pick it over talent in some rare cases. Think of Nick Van Exel. He was a steal at 32 for the Lakers, and an all star, but he could not get along with his coach and in the end lost the respect of his teamates and was traded and did nothing. I would really take a look at his character, but more importantly his work ethic. I would say that O.J. Mayo seemed to try and get his teamates involved at USC. That is a sign of a leader. He won't be around for us, I would trade the pick for a veteran. We need to win now, not later, no way. Were not in the future business anymore. |

Did you remember that Van Exel was picked 32th????What a brain!!!On the other hand Van Exel was a big player...it's a shame that he chose the Spurs to finish his career.
Van Exel would be the type of player we need for our SG bench position...I insist on Navarro that could fill this position very well for us. |
