Clippers-Bulls Preview

By NOEY KUPCHAN

Posted Dec 10 2012 4:55PM

The Los Angeles Clippers have won six in a row as they continue to get a boost from one of the best benches in the NBA.

While the Chicago Bulls don't figure to reach their full potential until Derrick Rose comes back, they've also gotten hot of late.

Having enjoyed lots of recent success in Chicago, the Clippers try for their first seven-game run in 21 seasons Tuesday night when they face the Bulls, winners of a season-best three in a row.

Los Angeles (14-6) has outscored opponents by an average of 16.8 points in its second six-game win streak of the season. The Clippers, who last took seven straight during a team-record eight-game run in 1991-92, cruised past Toronto 102-83 on Sunday.

Los Angeles held the Raptors to 39.0 percent shooting overall and 10 points in the fourth quarter, allowing one field goal over the final nine minutes.

"That's all defense," guard Jamal Crawford said after scoring 16 points off the bench. "Whenever you get a team stagnant and they can't score, it's defense."

The Clippers, who rested starters Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan and Willie Green for the entire fourth quarter and Caron Butler for all but 1:36, continue to rely heavily on their reserves. Los Angeles is getting 41.8 points off the bench to rank near the top of the league and is 11-0 when its reserves score at least 41.

"As long as I've been in the league, through 20 games I've never played this least amount of minutes," Paul said. "I should have no arguments about being tired. I'm also enjoying cheering on guys out there playing. We like to see each other succeed."

Los Angeles surely likes its chances to keep doing that in Chicago (11-8 ), where it's taken nine of 11. The Clippers also beat the Bulls 101-80 at home Nov. 17, outscoring Chicago 53-25 off the bench.

The Bulls, though, have won five of six while limiting foes to 86.7 points per contest in that stretch. They shut down a New York team that was without Carmelo Anthony in a 93-85 victory Saturday, limiting the Knicks to a season-worst 32.1 percent shooting and outrebounded them 47-40.

"It takes awhile for a team to understand how hard we have to play. I think we're getting there," forward Luol Deng told the Bulls' official website after scoring 22 points. "I'm not saying we've figured it out and got it down, but we were a lot better tonight than we were at the beginning of the season.

"As long as we continue to do what we are doing, we're going to get better as the season goes on."

With Rose working his way back from a torn ACL and Richard Hamilton out with a foot injury, Marco Belinelli has stepped up to average 20.3 points over the last three games - significantly higher than his season mark of 7.6. He scored 22 in his fourth straight start Saturday.

"This is not my first year in the league," Belinelli said. "This is my sixth year. I don't want to be just a 3-point shooter. I want to be a complete guy. (Saturday) we played offense and defense, rebound, ran. That's the way we have to play."

The Bulls could also be without starting point guard Kirk Hinrich on Tuesday due to an injured left elbow. He's listed as day-to-day.

Let's have a successful road trip 3-1. Razz

Only good team in this road trip is the Bulls. 3-1 is reasonable. On our last road trip the competition was a lot stiffer. 2-2 would be bad. 4-0 would be ideal.

The Bulls are one of the toughest teams out there along with the Memphis Grizzlies and Minnesota Timberwolves. Joakim Noah is as tough as they come, and will be sure to bring a ton of energy and defensive intensity. Forcing him to work even harder than usual will be key in us getting the W.

I think our bench will ultimately end up being the difference in this game. As tough as the Bulls are, our bench is comprised of some of the toughest guys in the league, and more importantly, they're hard workers. As long as we're able to out hustle them, this win should come easy.

Nobody. But that is the situation, which makes next month big. We play GSW three times in January. We'll have an opportunity to really lock up the division.

That'd be nice. I was just thinking that even if our 4 game losing streak had turned into a 10 game losing streak, we would still have an opportunity to pass the lakers tonight with a 'W' (we'd have the same record, but we beat them head-to-head).

That should put into perspective just how good our record is compared to theirs. A good stretch of games over the next 3 weeks could all but lock up the division and home court by Christmas. Crazy.

Let's hope that the team is aware of the opportunity they have in front of them, starting tonight.

Both teams are on a hot streak. Getting this win will be another good notch under our belt and a further confidence booster. I think rebounding is going to be the key in this one. Chicago hits the glass hard so if we don't box out they are going to get a lot of second looks. Lets go clips!

Warriors have the Heat tomorrow and Hawks Friday, those games could be losses for them. Hopefully we run this road trip 4-0, to give us some penny's in the piggy bank.

I wonder who's got the call of the ESPN game? Geez I hope it's not Jon Barry. That guy sucks when he calls Clippers games.

I don't care if we win or lose, I just want our guys to play hard. >DO that and we'll win, if we do that and DON'T win that's fine.

I wouldnt doubt it. In fact I expect a losing streak. That seems typical from this team: after a long winning streak we follow it up with a losing streak. Being that this is an away stretch, very very possible. However, if we pull out of this road trip with a 3-1 recprd or better then vinny will have proved that he can mamage to calm the team and snap them out of their funks they get into

Yep literally reminded me of what Billups did against the Jazz lol.

Kidd has been amazing though. Hitting clutch shot after clutch shot for my Knicks. Shocked He is shooting 50% from downtown. Ridiculous.

Actually Billups and Kidd are very similar when you think about it(at this stage in their careers).

Melo has been playing like an MVP as of late(If Paul doesn't get the MVP I wouldn't mind if Melo got it).

Still early but don't like the start. Looks like we can't even get up good shots against them in 3 tries.

Why do announcers outside of Mike and Ralph still wonder why Blake is not a shot blocker? They think he should be just because he can jump. Well, newsflash: He doesn not have the length. Wingspan is the key to blocking shots, not jumping ability.

I really like how Bulls defend the Clippers. It's genius. All they need is Rose and Hamilton to be back for scoring. that a championship team right there.
