Clippersfan 86 brought up a good point "how the freak is a minimum contract player our 4th or 5th best player?" Presently, matt barnes is averaging more points per game, more assists per game, and steals per game than our starting center deandre jordan. He is also ahead of caron butler in every category. So with this amazing level of play teams are sure to be taking notice. Also his current salary of $854,389 will not keep him here since at least one team will at the minimum offer him double his current salary. In my opinion barnes at double his salary $1.6 million is still a steal. So what do you guys think we should offer barnes to keep him here?

Signed to a 2 yr deal worth 3-4 mil and we're actually paying him the vets min of 1.2+ mil.

Well how much can we even offer him? Its kind of hard to say how much he is worth. He has always been a pretty good mercenary type of player who could never really stay in one franchise partially due to his attitude problems. In terms of pure play he is easily worth 5m. He is arguably an above average starter SF.

more than fair. maybe 2 years at 2.5 to 3 million per year. hes not a starting sf, he is better fit for the bench.

He may not be a starter, but he's a better starter then the one that's starts ahead of him, LOL.

Re thinking it, I'd even go 3 yrs @ 9 mil.

idk if hes a better starter, definately wasnt with the flakers last season. hes a better bench player. hes happy with that role, thats why he has been so effective.

3 million a season for 3 years would be great.

before we go out and give 3 year contracts, lets wait till the end of the year. There is a reason why he's been on as many teams as he has in years in the league. Somewhere, something goes wrong. I hope he keeps it up so we can keep him but lest wait.

I think it's gonna be a 2 year 4-5 mil deal.

That's the key. he's happy in his role. He's proud of his role. No need to change anything. He's already playing more minutes than Butler. No reason to change things when everyone is happy.

He's the exception to the rule...he gets better the older he gets.

Not in the playoffs. wink

I will say that this kind of offense is where he thrives.

He had some nagging injuries last year that might have had some adverse affects to his game, but yeah he knows his role and plays it well.

He's still a better "starter" than the guy that starts in front of him. wink

Hopefully we can rid ourselves of Butler find a young SF next season and have Matt back him up. That would be perfect.

That is true, but he has done well with both GSW and Orlando in the P.O.'s.

Agreed. But not the last two playoffs appearances. Anyway, I was the one who said Barnes could end up being our 6th man at the start of the season so I know what he can do. Just hoping it lasts.

Words of wisdom. A two year contract at anywhere between 2-4 mill would probably cover us very well, even if he doesnt have another season like this one his role as an enforcer and defensive presence may make keeping him a good investment, but i do agree not a three year deal.

Great suggestion. This would not cripple us financially and if he didnt play well two years wont hurt us.

We have the advantage...he wants to stay in LA, same with Odom (would only sign them both for very low contracts)

Matt gets a two-year deal, he is 32 and was sitting at home not getting a contract offer before Chris Paul began playing pickup basketball with him and told management this guy "has game" sign him now! This is where he wants to play and his energy, skills, and basketball IQ make him a great pickup and deserving of a new two-year deal come summer.

Split the MLE between Odom and Barnes? We don't have a lot to work with for those players.

If he stays healthy and CP3 wants him,,he stays and DTS figures out the money.

I think for once DTS is seeing a major return on his investments so why not keep it going? Personally, I never thought I would like the guy but he is such an asset seems like someone you keep. Just like Lamar. Whats a few extra bucks in fines for cap issues?

Really? That's a pretty good story. Well, we have to thank Chris for that addition.

So, I was looking up Matt Barnes statistics over his career and this seasons averages rank among his highest ever. In regards to offense the 9,9PPG he is averaging this year are the second highest in his career. Blocks per game this year 0.8 is tied with his career high from last year with the lakers. This year his steals per game 1.4 are the highest of his entire career, his assists per game 1.4 are somewhere in the middle of what he has averaged career wise. and his rebounds per game 5.0 is the second highest (there were three other years that he posted up 5.5 RPG). FT% is the second highest of his career, and his FG% this year ranks in the top five of his entire career. Collectively, I would say this is the second best year of his career, and with so many games left he has the potential to surpass his 08-09 averages. Bottom line, he is thriving here with this roster.

How much is the MLE anyway?

^ 5 mil

Barring a fall out with BG, CP3 (which i highly doubt will happen seeing how he owes his job to Chris Paul) or FO, we have to keep him. He brings too much to the team to let him go without a fight.

i like the suggestion someone above had, which was to split the MLE between Odom and Barnes, that was a great idea. it keeps them both here without over paying

Ah, look at his career Per 36 mins for a better view of his play. Last 2 years with the Lakers he got less MPG. But he is doing very well with us...his PER and WS/48 are the highest in his career.

Excellent job Matty, here's hoping you keep that kind of play up for the whole season.

Barnes has done so much for us, even kept us in games a couple of times. We really need to re-sign him
