Clippers Vs. Celtics Game Preview

By JEFF BARTL Posted Dec 26 2012 4:56PM

Chris Paul and Blake Griffin receive most of the notoriety for the Los Angeles Clippers, though one of the league's deepest supporting casts has been a major reason for their success.

Los Angeles looks to extend its franchise-best winning streak to 15 on Thursday night when it hosts a Boston Celtics team that has mainly held Paul in check the last couple times he's faced it.

The Clippers (22-6) have surged to the NBA's best record during their recent run following Tuesday's 112-100 victory over Denver. Paul has been the catalyst for the franchise's turnaround since being acquired from New Orleans prior to last season and is determined to bring it to new heights.

"This is fool's gold," Paul said. "You don't play for the regular season. Obviously, you want to build something."

Paul has 20 assists last two times he's faced Boston, but he's also shot just 3 for 21 in those games and may need help from a cast of reserves ranking among the best in the league averaging 42.7 points.

Jamal Crawford, making the case for his second career sixth man of the year award, scored 22 points for the second straight game Tuesday as Los Angeles improved to 10-2 when he hits the 20-point mark.

"It's about getting better and better," Crawford said. "We're trying to stay locked in and focused."

The Clippers' 64 points from their reserves marked the most since scoring 78 in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 30, 2000.

"We (the bench) are just trying to keep pushing it," Ronny Turiaf told the team's official website. "We're trying to do whatever we've got to do to give us a chance to win a ball game by moving the ball from side to side and playing together. If we do that, everybody succeeds."

The bench outscored Boston's 31-11 in the most recent meeting March 12, but Boston overcame Griffin's 24 points in a 94-85 win in the only matchup since Paul joined the Clippers.

The Celtics (14-13), who have won three of the last four meetings, ended a five-game road losing streak with Tuesday's 93-76 win over Brooklyn to begin a four-game trip. They had lost four of their previous five overall but forced 20 turnovers and set a season best for points allowed.

Boston also plays at Golden State on Saturday before ending its trip Sunday at Sacramento.

"It was good to get off to this start. It was good to finally play from start to finish," said Paul Pierce, who along with Kevin Garnett scored only eight points. "So it was a well-balanced game, but I'm happy with the start of the trip."

Garnett added 10 rebounds to tie Charles Oakley for 15th on the NBA's career list, but he has only one double-digit rebounding effort in his last eight versus the Clippers.

Rajon Rondo's five assists Tuesday were his fewest this season excluding Nov. 28 against Brooklyn when he was ejected in the second quarter. He's averaging 10.5 assists in his last four games versus the Clippers, though, and his 13.8 points per game against them are his best versus any team.

Rondo and Paul are the NBA's top two assist leaders, with Rondo averaging 11.9 and Paul dishing out 9.5 per contest.

Clippers are scared of no team. I hope they get motivated since its a big name team. If we come out strong this we get the W no problem. We have a superior bench by far and we have the superior PG.

We are much better offensively and defensively as well. As soon as KG leaves the floor the Celtics go from very good defensive team to a below average one.

I've been really looking forward to this game. It won't be easy by any means but it's going to be a great game to watch. I think it's going to be a back and forth battle with the Clips pulling away at the end of the third and dominating most of the fourth.

Why not? If they respect them then they will put in more effort.

Come on Clipper fans, let don't get too overconfidence. Just cause in paper they don't appear well off, but the Celtics are well storied franchise and this team scares me. They're really good with the tangibles. Also, I hope Clippers fan just to revenge every loss from past two years. Let's Go Clips and Represent!

Not to sound overconfident or cocky, but the Clippers are the best team in the league(someone pinch me). Every team from the Wizards, Bobcats, and Kings to the Knicks, Heat, and Thunder are all winnable games. That being said, the Celtics are a strong candidate at ending our winning streak. As long as the Clippers continue to show effort on the defensive end, there's no reason why we can't win this game.

Defensively, we'll have to focus on closing out on shooters. Jason Terry, Paul Pierce, Courtney Lee, and Jeff Green are all threats from Deep. KG and Brandon Bass are both money from 18-20 feet. It's easy for big men to let opposing bigs shoot from outside just because they're not used to having to run out on them. Doing that would be a grave mistake for us in this game. Also have to do a good job of stopping dribble penetration from Rondo and Pierce. I expect we'll be able to do a good job of forcing turnovers by Rondo and some of their younger players. As long as we're able to play "Clippers Basketball" we should pull out the win easy.

I'm nervous about the Celtics. After last year's game against them. I know it makes no sense. They are worse this year than last (and they don't have Ray Allen) and we are way better this year. Yet these guys are proud vets and former champs. Very concerned. Clippers gotta stay focused. I think Blake likes playing against KG, so hopefully he'll have a big game.

Does anyone know if the Celtics are turnover prone or do they take care of the ball pretty well?

Nevermind, I found the info:

They turn the ball over slightly less than we do, but we force an average of 2 more turnovers than they do.

The Celtics average 38.59 rebs per game, fewer than they allow their opponents, 42.59. We average 41.86, slightly more than our opponents, 40.21.

They shoot .469 from the field and hold their opponents to .449. We shoot .479 from the field and hold opponents to .426.

Ugh...we really should win this game.

^ The Celtics are pretty average with their turnovers. They average 14 a game while we average 13.8 a game. I don't see the Celtics winning because they are dead last in offensive rebounds. Basically, if the Celtics miss the shot, it's most likely going to go our way. Plus, their offensive game is pretty mediocre as well.

The advantage the Clippers have is their fast pace "showtime" offense. If the Clippers play at their pace,'they will win. If the play their pace and play mad d on Rondo and force him to have a bad night, the Clippers will dominate. If the Clippers lose, it will be because they beat themselves.

Lol relax. They are an above average team in the Leastern Conference and would not even be a playoff team in the West. There time is over. When your best player is Rondo you are in trouble.

We are much better on both ends of the floor.

Paul Pierce has been playing well. Butler and Barnes need to slow him down. DJ and Blake can't overlook KG and Sullinger.

Take care of business and get win #23.

This is a very dangerous game- if the Clippers allow the Celtics to hang around going into the 4th quarter- there's a decent chance that the winning streak will be kaput. If the focus and intensity are there I think the guys will be just fine.

You're right. Forgot about the biggest Clipper hater, Jason Terry. We can't have him come here and get a win and say same old Clippers.

We have to blitz them fast in the first and make their old guys look really old!

The Clippers should be able to run passed the old knees of Paul Terry and KG.... I'm sure Rondo will have another big night with his ability to pass the ball so well.. But don't think it'll be enough for the Clips as we continue our winning steak with win number 23... Go Clips Smile

Your right that's the game I've been eye balling.. It'd be a dirty grind out game for the Clippers tonight then we head out to play tomorrow @ Utah where we almost gave up the W when Billups over threw the ball and gave Foye a 3 point shot that could have won them the game... Yikes I know they want that one back...

Boston weakness: points in the paint allowed, 3pt shooting (only 16% of their total points from 3's), rebounding, fast break defense. They'll be tough in the beginning but we'll wear them down in the end.

Gotta blow them out. Can't afford to lose AT HOME to a prideful team on national TV that truly believes they are going to beat us. Yet another statement game where we have to prove the team is for real to the rest of the world. I hated how last year we had so many letdown games on national TV to where I had to deal with more trash talk about how overrated the team is etc. Beating teams like the Celtics by 20-30 sends a huge message to fans and the other NBA teams.
