    Quote:
It's not always best to take need over talent in the NBA draft, but with long-term concerns over injured guard Shaun Livingston, it would be a shock if the Clippers didn't take a guard with the seventh pick. Livingston destroyed his left knee after landing awkwardly following a missed layup against Charlotte in February 2007, tearing the anterior cruciate ligament, the posterior cruciate ligament, and the lateral meniscus. The fourth overall pick in 2004 missed last season and it's uncertain when he will play again. An NBA source said the Clippers aren't expected to make Livingston a qualifying offer (the lowest starts at $5.8 million), making him an unrestricted free agent July 1. But with major knee concerns, it's uncertain the Clippers, or any team, will be rushing to sign him. According to the source, Livingston can't work out back-to-back days and needs about 90 minutes of therapy before doing noncontact basketball drills. There is speculation he might not be able to play at the NBA level again. What made Livingston special: he is a point guard with Magic Johnson-like height, at 6 feet 7 inches. But if he returns without his spectacular quickness, he could move to the small forward position.

that makes me kinda sad. i still had high hopes for this young'n, but i guess the injury took too much of a toll on the organization. I still hope he returns next season, avoiding any regret if he signs w/ another team and lives up to his potential

Wow. I feel so bad. His story seems every day more and more frightening... Sad Sad

I don't wanna think that one day the new will be his early retirement.

I have been saying all along that when and if Livie ever comes back, he will have lost some of his quickness and speed, and he wasn't all that fast to begin with. But he is tall enough to become a shooting guard. So he better work on his jumper so he can switch positions. That is, if he ever comes back at all. If you don't think it can happen, just check out Darius Miles. He's done. So the Clippers are likely the only team to make Shaun an offer and it will be a small one. And that is only after he makes a showing in summer league. But he may not be able to play this summer. Tough

I don't take much stock in this article. Most of what they "report" is very old news. If this much news was available on Shaun's most current status, we would have seen it in LA newspapers. This just doesn't sound all that credible.

That doesn't sound good but I hope it's not 100% true. Last we officially heard he said he was feeling good. It could be because obviously he's not healed completely yet so he's still a bit limited. As far as the Clippers not making him the qualifying offer- that's probably the prudent thing to do for the organization.

But I'm curious what this "NBA" source is- it doesn't sound like a Clipper personnel.

Livingston expects to play very soon
    June 12th, 2008, 4:33 pm · Post a Comment · posted by ART THOMPSON III, OCREGISTER.COM
Clippers guard Shaun Livingston said Thursday that the day is coming very soon when he will be cleared to have basketball-related activity.

“It could be within 2-3 weeks, it could be less than that,” Livingston said. “But it’s definitely right around the corner. It’s definitely on deck. Everything’s cool and we’re sticking with the game plan.”

It seems like eons since the last time Livingston has been on the court. His recovery and rehabilitation from a devastating left injury now is in its 16th month.

“I’ve been putting all of my strength work and all of my exercises and putting that into basketball-related form. So, it’s looking real good.”

Livingston said his initial contact work would consist of playing one-on-one, two-on-two, three-on-three and finally five-on-five.

“It will be some one-on-one, full court, where I’m bringing the ball up the court under pressure,” Livingston said.

Los Angeles is a mecca for off-season pickup games, involving NBA players, and Livingston said he hopes to be able to play in those games, without any restraint.

But first things, first. The Clippers have until June 30 to tender the 22-year old Livingston a qualifying offer of $5.8 million. Otherwise, he would become an unrestricted free agent, the following day.

“I’d like to have my contract situation worked out, before I do anything, as far as any five-on-five, open gym stuff,” Livingston said. “But if not…hey, I’ve been sitting out too long.”

Livingston said his agent, Henry Thomas, and the Clippers are not actively negotiating but discussions are certain to resume soon.

“Really, I know (the Clippers) want to wait and see what I’ve got and what I’m going to be able to do, and my limitations and restrictions,” Livingston said. “But I think people are going to be fairly surprised.”

Livingston said he does not know what the Clippers’ decision would be, in regards to the June 30th deadline.

“They could pick it up, they could let it go, to see what’s out there for me,” he said. “All I can do is to be here every day, working out, getting better, and getting ready for next season.”

Obviously, Livingston would like the Clippers to tender him the qualifying offer.

“Definitely,” Livingston said. “But I anticipate being back with the Clippers, regardless if it’s with the qualifying offer or whatever the deal is. I look forward to being back, because I’d like to stay in L.A. But it’s whatever direction they decide to go in. I’m on board to be playing, wherever that is.”

There are clear indications from Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy and vice president of basketball operations Elgin Baylor that they want Livingston back, only not at $5.8 million.

Including the entire 82-game season he missed this year, injuries have cost Livingston 181 games out of a possible 324 games since his rookie season in 2004-2005.

“I would definitely understand but on the other hand I know that I’m competitive and I know what I’m going to bring to the table,” Livingston said. “It’s going to be an asset and assets aren’t necessarily free.

“On the other hand, I’m not out here asking for Gilbert Arenas money. I recognize the situation. I’m not naive. I understand that it’s a business. But I’m out here to play ball and make teams better. That’s what I look forward to doing for the Clippers.”

Livingston said at times it has been mentally excruciating, not being able to play the game that he has loved for so long.

“That’s why when I get back, it’s going to be even more of an anticipation,” he said. “I’m going to have an even more harder drive and a deeper hunger.”

It should be an interesting end of the month and beginning of July with the Draft looming and free agency just around the corner!!!!!

Wow. I DO NOT envy Baylor, Dunleavy and the rest of the Clipper brain trust! (pardon the expression?) There are just SO many things up in the air here! First you've got EB and Corey... do they re-up or no? If they do, how much do you commit to their staying? With EB, ok... a lot(!) because he's pretty much the key, but with Corey? Then you have Shaun and his "I can play"... but can he? And even if he can how much do you pay him considering his history of fragility? Then you've got the idea of dealing Corey via sign and trade (if he's amenable)... and who for? A point? A two? We in the forum certainly can't agree on anyone. Then there's the draft and the gamble(s) there. Dunleavy loves point forwards and Gallinari's basketball IQ is supposed to be off the charts. That's gotta be tempting for him, uh... but his best young player just happens to already man that SF position. Then there's Eric Gordon, who is supposed to be a bigger, better version of the Ben of the same name that half the forum is clamoring for, and who would be a LOT cheaper for at least three years! 'Course if you take him you have the potential of missing out on a super athlete like the 19 year old Westbrook who could be the answer at point for the next 10 years or so, not to mention Augustin who is the "natural" point available to us. Have I missed anything? Sure... a lot probably. For one thing I missed the bottom line, that being that it ALL hinges on just exactly what DSterling is willing to SPEND! I won't EVEN talk about that track record! If Dunleavy ain't totally gray, or totally bald after the next couple of months I'll be surprised. Oh yeah... throw in that we play in a hella tough conference, and share a city with a team that looks to be mega-good for the next who knows how many years. Nope... can't say that I necessarily envy Dunleavy, Baylor et al. But it promises to be interesting being a Clipper fan. Hope Thornton kicks ass.

I agree, dwb.. I wouldn't want to be in that front office right now, either.. A satisfactory offseason for me would be to sign-and-trade Maggette for TJ Ford + Someone (#17 or another one of their players), and draft Eric Gordon.. I think Thorn Dogg's outside shot will be improved next season, so Thorn + Gordon should cover the non-existent outside shot of Ford.. If it doesn't, then oh well.. At least the front office attempted to improve this team. I think that team would probably be really entertaining, none-the-less.. Just make SOMETHING happen!

I feel no pain for our GM neither Dunleavy...I would love to be paid for taking this kind of decisions...Baylor must be the whole year doing nothing just watching the games for free. This is my dream.

As for TJ I'm not convinced...Couldn't we find something different???

I completley agree Miquel. Baylor and Dunleavy are getting paid millions to make those decisions, they don't desrve any pity. If anything, there should be more accountability. And TJ Ford is not the answer!

My man, unfortunately there isn't much out there. We may end up starting Knight while a rookie Pick matures. . Clipper management I hope has a card up their sleeve rather that their head up their a**. I would bet a Laker victory flag that we'll go after Arenas real hard. I love EB but people will come to see Arenas. Jamisom & Butler are OK but what about Kaman,Thornton, and Brand and Arenas. Not bad company. Maybe he'll con$ider it

    got this from la times:

    Shaun Livingston resumes basketball-related activities
Alex Gallardo / Los Angeles Times
    Shaun Livingston
He's been playing one-on-one games and is now able to dunk.
By Jonathan Abrams, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
    June 16, 2008
After nearly a year and a half of rehabilitation, Clippers point guard Shaun Livingston has been medically cleared for basketball-related activities.

Livingston, 22, has played two games of one-on-one this past week and his seriously injured left knee has improved to the point where is now dunking. The odds of him being cleared to play in the Las Vegas summer league, however, remain small.

Livingston injured the knee Feb. 26, 2007, in a game against the Charlotte Bobcats. He missed the rest of that season and sat out the entire 2007-08 season.

Livingston will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if the Clippers do not offer him a salary starting at $5.8 million. The team is still waiting to see how he progresses before making the decision, but will probably attempt to resign him at a lesser price.

interesting that he has been "medically cleared for basketball-related activities", but the odds of him being cleared to play in the Las Vegas summer league remain small. i sure hope he comes back strong...
