NEW YORK (AP) -- Avery Johnson was fired Thursday as coach of the Brooklyn Nets, who have fallen to .500 in their season of new surroundings and elevated expectations.

After a strong start to their first season in Brooklyn, the Nets have lost 10 of 13 games to fall well behind the first-place New York Knicks, the team they so badly want to compete with in their new home.

But after beating the Knicks in their first meeting Nov. 26, probably the high point of Johnson's tenure, the Nets went 5-10 and frustrations have been mounting.

The Nets were embarrassed by Boston on national TV on Christmas, then were routed by Milwaukee 108-93 on Wednesday night for their fifth loss in six games.

Star guard Deron Williams recently complained about Johnson's offense, and Nets CEO Brett Yormark took to Twitter after the loss to Celtics to voice his displeasure with the performance.

General manager Billy King announced the dismissal Thursday without saying who will be interim coach. The Nets next play at home Friday against Charlotte.

Brooklyn started the season 11-4, winning five in a row to end November, when Johnson was Eastern Conference coach of the month. But he couldn't do anything to stop this slump, one the Nets never anticipated after a summer spending spree they believed would take them toward the top of their conference.

Johnson has been the Nets' coach for a little more than two seasons. He went 60-116 with the Nets, who moved from New Jersey to Brooklyn to start the 2012-13 season. Johnson coached the Dallas Mavericks to an appearance in the NBA Finals in 2006.

This is the NBA's second coaching change this season following the dismissal of Mike Brown by the Los Angeles Lakers.

if Dwight and D-Will were on the same team they'd probably get a coach fired twice as fast or maybe get a whole organization fired. there's probably some validity, but it's sad to see a trend setting on making the head coach a scapegoat. i guess that's business.

Bring on the Phil Jackson rumors, honestly it would be kinda cool to see him coach that team.

He only coaches contenders with two top 10 players in the nba. Zero chance.

D. Will has regressed a lot. Part of it is because he is a system PG(Sloan was great for him but D. Will threw him under the bus) but also because he isn't in great shape and is getting older. To be fair Avery Johnson utilized him fairly poorly.

Can't believe people thought he was as good as CP3 at one point. I always found it laughable. CP3 was always a level higher.

If the Jazz didn't pass on CP3 for D-Will, do you think CP3 would still be with the Jazz right now?

If CP3 was on the Jazz they could have potentially made it to the Finals since the Jazz had a much better roster than the Hornets and CP3>>>D. Will. Sloan would have also stayed instead of quitting due to diva D. Will.

I think he would have stayed on the Jazz probably but who knows.

The Jazz had Boozer in his peak, a still very good Kirilenko, a very good Ronnie Brewer, Millsap, Okur, Korver, etc. A very talented team.

This has made me lose a lot of respect for D-Will. Not to mention, he's just overrated.

D-Will is starting to remind me a lot of Baron Davis.. All the talent in the world but doesn't place that talent in the proper places and is quite injury prone..

And this was the guy we once wished to come here. Thank God for Almighty Chris Paul.

LOL, Ron Boone, the Jazz analyst, voted for Williams in the 06 ROY award. He ruined what would've been history in the making. CP3 would've been the first unanimous ROY since David Robinson. Instead, he got 124 of 125 first-place votes.

This idiot's argument was that Williams played better in the second half and he was better in head-to-head matchups against Paul. Bwahahahaha, I guess awards should neglect the first half of the season and games that didn't involve head-to-head matchups between the two choices.

CP3 was pretty much the clear cut better PG every season. Head to head matchups mean little when D. Will had the superior team for the majority of his career.
