Clippers Vs. Warriors Game Preview

By ALAN FERGUSON Posted Jan 02 2013 1:56AM

The first day of 2013 brought a different result for the Los Angeles Clippers than the final month of 2012, and the next several days in this new year might not be much easier.

After the franchise's longest win streak came to an end, the Clippers continue their challenging stretch with Wednesday night's visit to the Golden State Warriors, the first of two matchups in four days between the top two teams in the Pacific Division.

The Clippers (25-7) became one of three NBA teams all-time to go 16-0 in any month in December, and their 17 straight wins entering the new year marked the longest run in the league since Boston won 19 in a row in 2008-09.

Los Angeles, though, couldn't keep the run going past New Year's Day as it lost 92-78 in a visit to the NBA's top home team, Denver.

No Clippers player had more than 12 points, with Blake Griffin and Eric Bledsoe each reaching that number as the team shot a season-low 38.5 percent. Los Angeles was converting at a 48.5 percent clip during its win streak, which began Nov. 28.

"We were all a step slower today," Griffin said. "We've got to be better than that. We're not going to sit and cry on the plane and get beat down. We're not going to cause ourselves to lose our confidence, despite what people want us to do. That's the best thing about the NBA - you've got another game."

The next one is against a surprising Warriors team that's won three straight overall and nine of 11 at home. Golden State (21-10) has held each of its past three opponents to fewer than 90 points.

"We are a hundred times better defensively than we were last year, and that's why our record reflects that," point guard Stephen Curry said. "We just have to stick to it."

The Warriors allowed a season-low 36.0 percent shooting in a 101-83 home win over Boston on Saturday while converting 52.1 percent at the other end of the floor, including 12 of 19 from 3-point range. Curry was 4 of 5 from beyond the arc en route to a team-best 22 points and David Lee had 20 on 10-of-15 shooting.

"The bottom line is it's been a great year for us," coach Mark Jackson said. "2012 has been real good to us. We will put it behind us and now look forward to doing great things in 2013."

Jackson's club has already beaten the Clippers once this season, winning 114-110 on the road Nov. 3. Curry and Carl Landry each had 23 points while the Warriors overcame 27 apiece from Chris Paul and Jamal Crawford.

Paul is averaging 25.5 points in his last four games against Golden State but the Clippers have lost three of those matchups, including a 104-97 defeat in their most recent visit to Oakland on Feb. 20. The Los Angeles point guard had a team-best 24 points in that game while Lee had 24 and 13 rebounds for Golden State.

The Clippers will play the Warriors again Saturday night at Staples Center after facing the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Golden State, meanwhile, will have two days of rest between those matchups.

If we win tomorrow, all is forgiven. This is the win I've been looking for so far this season.

Blake holds the key to this game for us. Simply put, he needs to play more aggressive than he has the last two games

We have to go nuts out to win this. It'll be a great bounce back game, and it'll take some pressure off Saturday's game.

Not worried about Saturday's game, think we win that one, even if we're on a 2 games losing streak.

We can't possibly be on a 2-game skid by Saturday... it's either a win streak after beating the lakers, or at worst, a 3-game skid after tonight, GSW and LAL.

Tomorrow's game comes down to our stars. Blake and CP cannot get outplayed by Lee and Curry. This is what happened last time we played them and we obviously lost.

Also, our bench has to outplay their bench. Landry and Jack killed us.

Agreed. Blake needs to be active on the offense and hustle on D without fouling. He's been really disappointing in these past few.

Yeah, Vinny did time in the F.O. and as an assistant.

Mark Jackson talked a lot of sh!t for ESPN... his team looks good right now, but my money says they're a first-round wonder and then "goodnight".

TJ Siemers just came out with a scathing report article about the game tonight, irritated me. I can't tell if he likes or dislikes the team but he pretty much called our clips pretenders.

hopefully the calls go both ways, cuz lee is a dirty player. hes talented but he often gets away with cheap shots. the last two games griffin struggled because he was getting ticky tack fouls called on him, while receiving no calls when he got hammered. millsap and faried got away with grabbing and hammering blake, which impacted griffin in not being able to get into a rhythm.

First off I would like to state that I don't think this team was tired physically. I didn't see anything to indicate such. They were shooting early shots, and running when they should have slowed it down. Mentally maybe, but physically, no. Not IMO.

Secondly I would like to say I am not going to bash VDN, even though i could, but I think he is doing his best, and he has shown growth, and I hope he continues to do so. The critiques of his rotations have already been stated, but no matter how deep people keep saying we are, we only have 1.5 pgs in cp3 and eb12. So if we play them together then we would have to do something out of the box, which at this point I don't think Vinny is ready to do. Not that it would be a bad thing but w/e. I will state that the lack of movement on offense is disturbing with so many capable and willing passers on this team.

The negatives of this game beyond the obvious, not shooting well, I saw bad defensive rotations, ie; doubling on adre miller beyond the 3pt line. Silly passes, and Bledsoe has been doing some really headscratching stuff lately. One thing I am tired of seeing is JCraw coming off a screen, catching the pass, and dribbling around the ft line, and launching a shot in the defenders face. Dude, if your defended well, pass the ball or call for a screen.

Third, Blake and Cp3 need to be able to take over games when things are not clicking with the rest of the team.

I would give this team an A for energy, and an F on awareness. I don't know what Blake was thinking about, but I really didn't like his dissapearing act in this game.

I gonna give vinny the benefit of the doubt, that he will figure out that, the second unit, needs more set plays than the starters.

Side note: I am tired of hearing commentators talk about how physical we play, or we play bully ball. Did no one see What Memphis did to us in the playoffs? We are just responding to the physical play that we get. Our coach is not the one say to hard foul the other teams star players. It's like "Oh they don't flop now so...let me see...Oh, they play bully ball. They push and hold and reach. What team doesn't? You know it's a problem when the raptors, and the suns think they can get physical with you.

Hell If we are gonna lose like this, Blake or Dj(ha) might as well get a flagrant for something real. F a Poster.

unfortunately we arent the flakers. we answer the physical play and we get fouls called on us. faried was grabbing griffin blatantly and nothing was called. brewer kept pulling crawford and nothing was called. however, gallinari would flail like a b***h and he would get the call. by the way, eventhough dj played well, he missed a s***load of ft's. we need him to improve asap. if he wants touches and more minutes, it is imperative he makes at least 50 percetn of his ft's

I agree with everything you say except, Dj's fts. It's clearly a mental thing. He has some mechanical problems but hey I'm just a fan so no sense in discussing that. In a game like this when you need to slow the game down and DJ(I'm guessing) was probably at or above 50% on fgs, that should warrant him being in the game. IMO this goes deeper than just Vinny not trusting him at the line. This is on Sterling, putting Vinny in a survival mode type of coaching. FTs are only one aspect of the game, and after the last game, Dj deserved to play more minutes in this one. He wasn't going to win this game for us though. It was just bad strategy, and I can't believe these guys, were trying to run so much in the Altitude.

Loved this quote from DJ!

"We lost tonight," DeAndre Jordan said. "We're going to win tomorrow."

Honestly a part of me is glad the streak ended now so the target on our back is reduced and the guys can renew the hunger and smack GS around. If Denver didn't end it, GS probably would have but now the Clippers can focus on revenge against the Warriors who have been a thorn in our side.

I was 99% certain our streak would break this week though a bit disappointing it happened on our first game Sad Gotta keep pace with OKC and SAS, let's get the W against GSW and the Fakers and go 3-1 this week and I'll be happy.
