Clippers Vs. Grizzlies Game Preview

By MATT BEARDMORE Posted Jan 13 2013 4:06PM

The Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Clippers probably don't want to think much about their last game.

They have much better memories of their last trip to Memphis.

Los Angeles opens a road-heavy portion of its schedule on Monday night in its first game at FedExForum since a series-clinching victory last postseason.

Trying to extend their franchise-record 13-game home winning streak, the Clippers (28-9) were outscored 29-18 in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 104-101 loss to Orlando, which had dropped 10 straight.

Los Angeles took care of the ball with just nine turnovers, but it matched a season low with six free-throw attempts and allowed 11 3-pointers.

"An embarrassing performance for us," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "We got what we deserved."

The Clippers will now try to avoid a season high-tying third straight road loss - they dropped their last two outside Los Angeles by 14 and 21 points, respectively, as they begin a stretch of 15 of 19 as the visitors.

Los Angeles' first stop on its three-game, four-day trip is FedExForum, where it last played May 13 in an 82-72 Game 7 win in the Western Conference quarterfinals. That victory gave the Clippers their third postseason series win in 41 years and second since relocating to Los Angeles.

These teams last met on Oct. 31, when Los Angeles won 101-92 to extend the Grizzlies' NBA-record losing streak on opening night to 12.

Memphis (24-11), though, won a season-best eight in a row following that setback and has established itself as one of the top teams in the conference. The Grizzlies moved with 1 1/2 games of the Southwest Division lead with Friday's 101-98 overtime home win over division-leading San Antonio, but they fell flat in Saturday's 104-83 loss at Dallas.

Memphis shot 38.1 percent and failed to force 10 turnovers - it finished with nine - for the first time in 139 games.

"We didn't have maybe one, maybe one-and-a-half starter that could bring it," coach Lionel Hollins said after Rudy Gay (12) was the only starter in double figures. "Our focus and concentration wasn't there."

That just can't happen since the Grizzlies rely so much on their starters - 72.5 percent of their scoring and 72.8 percent of their rebounding coming from that group.

The Clippers enjoy much better balance, as their bench contributes 40.2 percent of their scoring and 43.5 percent of their boards.

Jamal Crawford - the NBA's second-leading scorer off the bench with 16.2 points per game - scored a team- and season-high 29 in his Clippers debut in the season-opening win over Memphis.

Matt Barnes, who missed that contest due to a one-game league suspension, is averaging 13.3 points and 6.7 boards off the Clippers' bench in the last three games.

Blake Griffin, the team leader with 17.4 points per game and 8.6 rebounds, could use all the help he can get on the glass against former Clipper Zach Randolph.

The Memphis forward - the NBA double-double leader with 24 - posted season lows with six points and four boards on Saturday, but he's averaging 15.3 points and 13.5 boards in the last four games between these clubs, including the 2012 playoffs.

Memphis became the first team to lose Games 1 and 7 at home in a first-round series, but it has won six of eight at home in the regular season versus Los Angeles following a 94-85 victory on April 9.

Memphis has lost their consistency in the last month or so, this is one we can walk in and steal the W. Rivalry type game for sure, but not like the Clips aren't hungry to make up for the Orlando loss either much like the bombshell Memphis dropped at Dallas. Definitely must-watch TV tomorrow night! Lakers and us were hungry for a W in our last matchup, rivalry atmosphere, and we gutted out the win, we can do this again!

stop overrating the grizzlies. its funny that everyone, especially the media is thinking they are such a force. they arent. they are a gritty, tough team, especially with their frontline. but its a huge dropoff after gay, randolph and gasol. yeah it will be a hard fought game, but the clips overall talent is going to be too much for the grizzlies. they havent been playing well either. they dont have the luxury of a deep bench like we do. oh and vdn did coach circles around hollins. as long as the energy and focus is there, we will take it.

I wouldn't go that far. The Grizzlies are a very good team. Moreso at home. It won't be an easy victory thats for sure. They are an average offensive team but defensively they are the 2nd best in the nba. They would be better if they moved Rudy Gay for a player that fit them more though. Gay is a terrible fit there and overpaid. He makes the offense even worst with his inefficient scoring, ball dominance, and mediocre playmaking ability.

^ they lost a lot when mayo left. he gave them the spark off the bench. they are tough, no doubt. i just hope the reffing doesnt allow zbo to literally beat up blake with dirty cheap shots. its not griffins fault that zbo is slow and has to resort to dirty s*** to stop bg. i agree with them moving gay. but then again, he has a joe johnson type of deal, which will make him hard to trade

Lot of Debby Downers already after one loss,,,we can win, we can lose. I would bet more on the former as long as we can keep up with arguably one of the dirtiest teams in the league. W or L, I just want us to come out of this unscathed. If the officiating doesn't give those home-town clowns the edge, we win.

eventhough im a clips fan, i feel for rudy gay.going back to the topic, rudy gay not being in their lineup helps. hes a match-up problem for us. they lose a lot, even if he is at times a black hole on offense. i hope the clips come out blasting and dont let the grizzlies get any rhythm.

CP3 very doubtful for tonight, from Brad Turner. With Gay out, we're still at a disadvantage w/o our MVP. Least Bledsoe will get the minutes he deserves, probably will share ball-handling duties with Crawford.

Lol supposedly CP3 wasn't injured now it's "Very doubtful" he plays? Not a good sign AT ALL. Bright side of this is Bledsoe normally murders the Grizzlies and will get to shine.

If Bledsoe goes off for a near triple double his trade value will double too which is a bonus. He NEEDS to have a good game.

Have confidence that Bledsoe willbe aggressive and give the team a nice boost. Blake Griffin is still a beast and its times like these he has to go old school and power us to a win.

I wouldn't think the FO would say it is a game time decision if this were a season ending injury. He is probably really sore and no sense getting hit by these thugs in Memphis. You know their style, they are like a pack of dogs (smell like one too), go after the wounded first and they would be on CP3 like white on an aspirin.

that is my story and I am sticking with it

Honestly I'm not even fretting about CP3. It will give Bledsoe a chance to get some real burn because Vinny has no choice but to play him 25+ minutes a game now. This will boost our team long term by getting his confidence going AND increase his trade value.
