Clippers Vs. Rockets Game Preview

By JORDAN GARRETSON Posted Jan 15 2013 12:37AM

The Los Angeles Clippers could be without their superstar point guard for a second straight game.

If their most recent contest was any indication, they should be just fine.

Chris Paul will likely be a game-time decision for the Clippers as they continue a three-game road trip Tuesday night against the Houston Rockets.

Paul is day-to-day with a bruised right kneecap and missed his first game of the season on Monday, but the Clippers (29-9) matched their second-largest victory margin of 2012-13 in a 99-73 win at Memphis.

He sustained the injury when he bumped knees with J.J. Redick while chasing a loose ball in Saturday's loss to Orlando. Results of an MRI were negative. Paul is second on the team at 16.8 points per game, second in the league in assists (9.7) and first in steals (2.6).

"I want to play. No question, I want to play," Paul told the team's official website. "If I feel like I hinder the team then I won't."

Eric Bledsoe had 14 points with four assists, two steals and no turnovers while making his first start in Paul's place. The third-year player came in averaging 8.4 points and 2.6 assists over 18.1 minutes.

"We've got to do a good job helping (Bledsoe) a little bit, too," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "Guys have got to make shots and talk and we've got to put him in a position to be successful. He's got to control the tempo, control his turnovers and run the team. It's nothing he's not capable of doing."

The bench - a strength all year for Los Angeles ranking second in the league with 41.0 ppg - stepped up in a big way. The Clippers' reserves outscored Memphis' 54-26. Los Angeles is 22-6 when its bench outscores the opponent's.

"Missing the best point guard in the world in Chris Paul, we all had to play collectively and step it up, and I thought we did a good job of that," said Jamal Crawford, who scored 16 off the bench.

Houston (21-17) started its three-game trip on a five-game win streak, but went winless on the trek, capped by Saturday's 107-100 defeat to Philadelphia. A return home should help, as the Rockets have won seven of eight there.

"Every team goes through some adversity and we're going through some a little bit right now," coach Kevin McHale said. "We didn't win. We've got to find a way to win."

The Rockets are mired in a 3-point shooting slump, going 26 for 92 (28.3 percent) over their last three games. Starters James Harden, Chandler Parsons and Jeremy Lin are a combined 13 of 50 (26.0 percent) during that span.

They've also been outrebounded in three straight games by an average of 4.3 and the last two opponents shot a combined 50.6 percent from the field.

"We're not rebounding the ball like we need to be and we're not getting stops," said Harden, the NBA's fourth-leading scorer at 26.5 ppg. "During that five-game winning streak we were getting stops and getting out in transition scoring the basketball. If we don't get stops it slows us down and that's key."

The Rockets probably wouldn't mind if Paul sat out a second straight game. He averaged 23.7 points, 8.3 assists and 3.0 steals while shooting 50.0 percent in three wins against them last season.

Los Angeles swept the season series after losing 13 of the previous 16 meetings.

CP3 should sit. The big win in MEM proved we can play w/o him for a bit. We're looking at the bigger picture here, and we need him to be 100%.

i think the matchup with houston can be beneficial for us. bledsoe should give lin a very terrible time. i would not be surprised if ebled has over 5 or 6 steals tomorrow. as long as they close out on their shooters and dj is not manhandled by asik, we should be fine, even without cp3

Is this our first look at Linsanity? I don't think he played against us when he was with the Knicks last year.

Its our first time but Bledsoe should give Lin fits.

The Rockets are a fast paced team. I think we match up well against them since were one of the few teams that can run with them.

We need to defend the 3 and run out on shooters because the Rockets can light it up from the outside.

agreed. but based on mario chalmers locking up lin the times they have played against each other, i feel ebled will lock him down and give him a lot of trouble. we just have to control harden's penetration into the paint and make sure we close out on their shooters.

Also the All-Star voting ends tomorrow, so Bledsoe could potentially be guarding the starting PG for the West.

What we need to do is sneak into Hardens home and shave his beard while he sleeps, thus eliminating any super powers (like samson) that he might have aquired over the years and showing his bustedass grill to the whole world. He has rows of teeth like a shark!!! The embarassment of having a worse facial feature than Anthony Davis's unbrow or Charlie Villanuevas hairlessness should take all the wind out of his sails to the point he never leaves the locker room.

Harden will get his 25 but the key is to make him take tough shots and limit his free throw attempts.

Also, gotta defend the 3! Delfino, Lin, Parsons, and Douglas love that 3 pointer.

They better hold him out. Bled playing 30+ minutes of defense on that kid and he'll want to retire after the game.

Bled's steals total for tonight, I put the over/under at 5 1/2.

Run Barnes/GHill at Harden as much as possible and he'll have a very hard time as well. Bring the defensive intensity and Houston will have their 4th straight loss by the end of the night.

Spread first came out at -1.5 Houston then quickly jumped to -3... didn't these clowns see the beatdown we gave Memphis and notice we didn't even use our starters in the 4th?

I like our Clips chances. I don't recall a time when Harden ever exploded for 30+ points against us, but that was with OKC and less touches. If Lin is out (who I consider a non-factor anyway), that's certainly a plus. If we sweep this road trip w/o CP3, that'll make up for the Orlando loss Smile

I expect this one to be tougher than last night -- Memphis really played pretty awfully. Houston will be better. But if we show up with the same kind of defensive effort and Bledsoe plays the same kind of solid, steady game he did last night, we should be able to pull out a W. Houston has been pretty bad against the better teams in the West, so hopefully that holds true again tonight.

Btw some more updated info on Lin, he looks to be good to go tonight: http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nba/1772/jeremy-lin

Not like it matters, I think he's overrated and often exposed against good defensive teams. Bledsoe's going to make that ankle sprain a lot worse Smile

I think our guys got gassed tonight and may be running low on fuel today,,but heck with these guys you never know. they sometimes find energy where another team would just shut down (ala Memphis and their incredible lack of shooting last night)

^ Nah. Lamar was the only guy to log in over 30 min last night, Vinny sure thinks he needs the workout. Bledsoe is next highest at 28 min but he's young, he did look gassed when he left after the first half but he should be fine for tonight, don't think he played at all in the 4th. BG should be fresh for tonight, that's for sure.

Vinny did an excellent job spreading the minutes last night, fatigue shouldn't be an excuse for tonight.

The only thing that scares me is that Houston has been stone cold from 3 pt line, if you've watched any Clipper games over the years you'll know that teams that have been cold suddenly get hot. I would expect Rockets to shoot high 30's low 40's from downtown, the 2 keys are defend the three and defensive rebounds, if the Clips do that they should be fine.

As long as Harden's scoring is limited we should be fine. Grant Hill will definitely help in that department. Thankfully we have such as deep team that one of our start players being out doesn't spell disaster.

With CP3 out any word on when Chauncey will be back on the court? I just worry a little long term with Bledsoe being the only healthy true PG we currently have.

Yeah, and Nash's was also on one of his leg bones... fibula, tibia, whatever... a patella (kneecap) doesn't support any weight, so he should be good fairly soon.

I think CP3 can play as early as Thursday but wouldn't be surprised if the staff played it safe and made him sit that one out, esp. since Minnesota is banged up beyond recognition. Billups was supposed to be doing some light practice last week, probably end of the month is my best guess for his return.
