Clippers Vs. Twolves Game Preview

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD Posted Jan 16 2013 1:39PM

Having passed a pair of difficult road tests, the Los Angeles Clippers haven't missed a beat without their All-Star point guard.

The Clippers might have to try for their third straight win without Chris Paul on Thursday night when they visit the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have lost five of six without star Kevin Love.

After missing the past two games with a bruised right kneecap, Paul is a game-time decision for Los Angeles (30-9) as it concludes this three-game road trip.

He suffered the injury when he bumped knees with J.J. Redick on Saturday with 54 seconds left in a 104-101 loss to Orlando. Paul is the team's second-leading scorer at 16.8 points per game, leads the NBA in steals at 2.6 per game and ranks second with 9.7 assists per game.

"He feels a lot better," coach Vinny Del Negro told the team's official website on Tuesday. "He's gotten great therapy. But we'll take it a day at a time."

Del Negro's club looks for its sixth win in seven games after rolling to back-to-back victories at Memphis and Houston by a combined 34 points.

Eric Bledsoe has filled in nicely since Paul went down, totaling 33 points on 11-of-21 shooting in his first two starts of the season.

Jamal Crawford has also provided a boost with 46 points in those victories, including a season-high 30 points and five 3-pointers in the 117-109 win over the Rockets. The Clippers improved to 11-1 when Crawford leads the team in scoring.

The reserve guard, however, has struggled against the Timberwolves. He's averaged 9.7 points while shooting 32.4 percent and 1 for 15 from beyond the arc in his last three against them. Crawford had 11-points on 2-of-10 shooting in the Clippers' 101-95 victory over Minnesota on Nov. 28.

One night after posting its second-largest victory margin in a 99-73 win at Memphis on Monday, Los Angeles reached season highs on the road in points and field-goal percentage (53.8) at Houston.

Los Angeles should be able to continue that efficiency against a Minnesota team that has allowed 104.9 points per game in its last nine and has the league's worst defensive field goal percentage (50.4) this month.

Despite four straight losses on their recent road trip, the Timberwolves (16-19) have won seven of their last nine at home, where they will play three of their next four games.

Minnesota, however, fell to 1-5 since its All-Star forward suffered a broken hand following a 113-98 loss at Dallas on Monday night. The club announced on Tuesday the operation to repair Love's hand was successful, and he'd return sometime in March.

Center Nikola Pekovic has tried to compensate for Love's absence, averaging 19.2 points while shooting 60.0 percent and 10.8 rebounds in his last six games.

Reserve guard J.J. Barea has totaled 36 points and shot 5 for 12 from 3-point range in his last two games after missing two because of back spasms.

The Timberwolves, though, averaged just 91.0 points on 41.3 percent shooting - including 17 for 66 (25.8 percent) from 3-point range - during its 0-4 road trip.

They rank last in 3-point shooting at 29.7 percent and currently are on pace to become the second team in 10 seasons to finish below 30 percent from long range.

"It was a tough trip," Barea said. "I tell them to remember how this feels. We have to get better at home." http://www.nba.com/games/20130117/LACMIN/gameinfo.html

The TWolves' defence has gone down the pan recently and with Love out it should be a fairly easy win. Of course you never know in the NBA and Minnesota has given us trouble in the past. Still I think we should pick up the W, with Paul or not.

If there's anything that looks like a guaranteed win in this league, this upcoming game is pretty damn close. Our boys better do their homework and come in prepared, I don't want to see Barea and Williams getting big games. These guys have lost 5 out of their last 6 with Love out and 4 straight coming into tomorrow, and unlike Orlando, every one of those losses in the last 4 is a complete blowout. CP3 should sit this one out, we got this Cliff! Road trip sweep!

Wolves always play us tough. No need to rush CP3 back if he's not 100%.

Timberwolves are a good home team and Love's impact is grossly overrated especially this season(he has been flat out mediocre). It could be a tough one.

I want to see BG go off in this game. I'd really like for him to assert himself a bit more now that CP3 is out. Just to show his leadership.

I have tickets to this game in Minneapolis. Clippers have looked often lazy vs wolves. If DJ does not get completely destroyed by Peckovic of the wolves, clip will win easy.

the clips need to step on the gas early. put them down and keep them down. rest cp3. if dj stops or contrains pekovic, we should run away with this. but yes this is a trap game, so the clips need to keep focus

Cut their throats early. Last thing we need is Orlando 2.0 where we let them hang around and steal one.

The key to winning this will be hunger. The Timberwolves are coming off a 4 road game losing streak and a loss at home(5 game losing streak). They will come at us hard. Literally like hungry wolves. We have to show similar intensity or we might lose. Never underestimate a team desperate for a win.

This. Its all going to come down to focus and desire in this one. If we come out with the right level of intensity, we should win. But if this turns into one of those games that we don't take serious enough (see home losses to Cleveland, NO, and Orlando), it could be a long night.

^^^ Game time decision, but if I had to guess, I'd say no. Considering how well the team played in the prior two games and that Minnesota is, on paper, a worse team than either Memphis or Houston, I think they'll be conservative and let CP have another night off.

play strong inside and don't get stuck on jumpers. This is all on Vinny he needs to make the right adjustments if the game gets close late in games like Orlando we can lose this if he can't draw up a play to bully the ball inside to close out.

Contain Pekovic and Barea, keep someone on Williams as often as possible, have Bledsoe shadow Rubio, and we'll be fine. They don't have a lot of options right now but we've seen how just 1-2 of these guys getting hot can burn us big time last season. Offensively we'll have our way with them, we just need to come in focused defensively.

We can't try and play to the Timberwolves style of game, we already know we are probably going to lose the rebounding game against Pek, so we must play our style of fast pace and ball movement. If we play slow and lethargic we will get destroyed.

I believe the definition of a trap game is where you have a weak opponent first and a tough game following it. You are looking to the next game rather than focusing on the current one. With Washington on Saturday I wouldn't exactly consider this a trap game.

Last Saturday against Orlando that was a trap game, with the hyped up showdown against the grizz on monday(didn't turn out so great for them).

With this one being on TNT, I'm going to miss Ralph and Mike's call. I just hope they don't put Reggie Miller on our game... hearing his blatant anti-Clippers bullshit is even worse than hearing him suck laker nuts.

In order to mitigate the pain, I shall play my usual TNT drinking game... a large sip whenever I hear any of the following:

  1. Barkley says that Kevin Love "when healthy" is the best power-forward in the NBA.
  2. Barkley says that the Clips can't win in the playoffs because "the game slows down".
  3. Barkley says that the Clips have no half-court offense.
  4. Barkley says that a front line as "affa-letic" as the Clippers' should get more rebounds.
  5. Barkley completely contradicts items 1-4 by saying "only God's an expert, Ernie".
  6. Shaq says "Throw it down, big man".

With that said, I apologize to you all in advance for the content of my posts after about 5.30, because I expect to be rat-arsed drunk.

Ralph and Mike don't do the games for ESPN, but ESPN doesn't have exclusivity, so those games are still shown on Primeticket (with Ralph and Mike). TNT has total exclusivity for their games.

^ If I'm down that way, I'd usually go to the espnzone at Staples, but it'll be full of laker fans and they'll probably get restless because they know their season ends tonight. Repping the Clips in there tonight is asking for trouble.

Better to steer clear. #Riot

We're get a little reprieve tonight, as Mike Fratello is the analyst alongside Kevin Harlan tonight. Reggie's calling the Heat-Laker game with Marv Albert.

That's cool. I like Fratello.

He'll probably be even more of a Clipper homer than Mike Smith. I was watching a game he was calling a few weeks ago... I forget who was playing, but 'the czar' couldn't even focus on the game and kept talking about how great the Clips are.

He used to work part-time with Ralph on Clipper telecasts back in the day, even sometimes filling-in for Bill Walton.

The Czar has always been one of my favorite NBA analysts, among the few I actually like.
