Clippers Vs. Warriors Game Preview

By BRETT HUSTON

Posted Jan 20 2013 8:05PM

It was easy to look at the Pacific Division prior to the season and picture an intense rivalry developing involving the Los Angeles Clippers.

It was a bit harder to imagine the other team being the Golden State Warriors.

The Clippers look to salvage a split of their season series with the Warriors and extend their latest winning streak to five Monday as they try for a rare victory in Oakland.

Most expected the Lakers-Clippers rivalry to flourish as Vinny Del Negro's team continued its rise as a contender, but instead the Lakers are floundering in 11th place in the West while the Clippers (32-9) are in a tight battle for the conference's top spot.

The team closest to the Clippers in the division is Golden State (24-15), which has handed the Clippers two of their losses. The Warriors won 114-110 at Staples Center on Nov. 3 and rolled to a 115-94 rout on Jan. 2 before falling 115-89 in L.A. three days later.

"The first time they beat us here, you would have thought they won the NBA finals," point guard Chris Paul said after Los Angeles' win, explaining the Clippers' energy level despite playing their fourth game in five nights.

Los Angeles led by as many as 39 points in that victory, something that didn't sit well with Warriors coach Mark Jackson. Jackson became so frustrated at one point late in the third quarter after an alley-oop dunk by a giddy DeAndre Jordan, he came onto the court and glared at the Clippers' bench as they celebrated during the ensuing timeout.

Some of them stared back.

"It was just a good old-fashioned heavyweight championship staredown. That's all," Jackson said. "But they earned the right to celebrate, the way they played. So what you've got to do as a coach or as a player is just let it soak in and remember it. That's all. Mark it down with permanent ink."

Los Angeles won that meeting without sixth man Jamal Crawford, who combined for 51 points in the two losses against Golden State. Paul, though, has averaged 25.7 points in the season series after putting up 27 on 10-of-12 shooting in that win.

Paul missed the team's perfect three-game road trip with a bruised right knee, but helped engineer yet another victory Saturday in his return. The six-time All-Star had 22 points and 11 assists in a 94-87 win over Washington as the Clippers overcame 36.6 percent shooting with 22 offensive rebounds.

"That's how we won the game - with offensive rebounding," Paul said. "It was cool to be back. I feel like it's been the longest week, sitting out three games. But I still need to get my timing back and get it through my head that I can play."

Golden State got point guard Stephen Curry back after he missed two games with an ankle injury but didn't have forward David Lee (sprained ankle).

Curry had 20 points, but Klay Thompson and Jarrett Jack made the difference Saturday at New Orleans. Thompson had a season-high 29 points while Jack added 25 points and 12 assists off the bench in a 116-112 win.

"He was special," Jackson said of Jack.

Curry was special in the Warriors' home win against the Clippers earlier this month, finishing with 31 points and eight assists while Lee added 24 points, 13 boards and seven assists.

It's uncertain if Lee, who has averaged 23.0 points and 12.7 boards in his last three home games versus Los Angeles, will play Monday.

The Clippers could use any break they can get. They've surrendered 109.4 points per game in losing 12 of 14 in Oakland.

Good practice game to prepare for the Thunder the following night. We have to get out on their shooters and can't allow offensive rebounds.

we need to play efficient on the offensive end and rotate to their shooters on defense. they are going to want payback, so we have to match their intensity.

I just want to crush the Warriors. I am sick and tired of them. They have been struggling lately. We need to beat them and head home on a positive note against the OKC>

I hate that we play the thunder the following night... add that in with how we blew the warriors out earlier this month and this is looking like a trap game

If anything, this is the opposite of a trap game, and the concern should be being worn out for the next nights game.

The good thing is the Thunder should also be pretty tired after playing the Nuggets at home. Hopefully they lose. Looks bad for them so far. Durant is playing really poorly.

No, we need the Thunder to win after a hard fought overtime game. If they lose then they will come into the game against us looking to rebound. However, if they win tonight after a hard fought game they will be exhausted and their energy wont be able to keep up against us at home.

I can't believe we will have played all four games against Golden State in the first half of the season. At least we won't have to see them the second half.

If definitely is a load of crap that we play OKC all 3 times off a back to back. Not to mention playing against uptempo Warriors IN Oakland.

Well, the overtime yes, but the Thunder didnt win. They have a day off and will be looking towards getting a win to get that record back on a winning streak. To boot we play tomorrow and its against the dreaded GSW

David Lee is a game time decision and expects to play today. He hates our guts and the Warriors aren't doing so well so I doubt he misses this game. Hopefully we can beat the Warriors and Thunder. Then the Warriors and Thunder will be desperate to bounce back. They will destroy each other. Twisted Evil

We do need to make a statement tonight to the warriors. I hope we can build a huge lead early on, and give a lot of our players the rest they need. We need to be 100% for our game agains the Thunder. I know someone has already posted this but man the NBA was really out to f**k us when they scheduled these games. We always face the Thunder in back to back games while they are fresh as daisies with rest

IMO Blake Griffin and David Lee are the best PF's in the league right now. Hopefully Blake doesn't try to prove he can shoot the entire game like last time at Oakland

weird game. I'd guess we win but an early Monday, a day when most people are working, tough to predict. Especially since they think they are our rival, one-way rivalry like the Griz but still....Could go either way but I'm pretty confident that CP3 will find a way to be pissed off and motivated going into this.

The big question is how many of us will be able to sneak away and actually watch in real time. Send the good vibes if you're stuck in the office today.

I could be wrong but last time we played on MLK, Blake went off for 47 points.

I think he destroys David Lee today and Clips win!!!

I have to say we do have some of the weirdest schedule I can ever remember happening to us,,last season didn't we have a NBA record for road games in a row or some such stuff. This week we get,,what is it Portland, two days in a row? Also always a tough team with rest after we play the night before.

I think the NBA picks their favorites and the ones they think will be in the finals and sort of work around those teams to give them the breaks at the expense of everyone else. Hopefully by seeing we are now an official elite team we can catch a break in the schedule and the foul dept next year,,although as many of us have speculated in the past we sometimes wonder more if it is a hate for DTS rather the our team.

Tell you what , Sat night that ball headed arse ref was looking to call a clip for anything.

I disagree, I think he wouldn't do that because Lamar Odom matches up well against the Warriors.

I agree. After this season we will officially be a familiar face among the leagues elite, and we should be getting more calls and easier/favorable schedule. Still, this tough schedule has its benefits. If we are playing a stronger strength of schedule than OKC or Spurs we should have an easier time in the playoffs than the other two mentioned teams

It's fu**ing simple... chase GS off the 3 point line= easy win. Let them shoot wide open 3's like that= loss. Just fu**ing defend the 3! When will the Clippers players learn that about the Warriors?

CP3 limping... man Bledsoe needs 30 minutes tonight. His defense is superior to CP3 on shooters and we CANNOT afford CP3 to get injured long term.

Bledsoe needs to be in and our wing players need to be screamed at to contest shots. Doesn't matter if it's a deep 3! Put your damn hands in their face.

Blake having a very good game being aggressive.

Anyone else worried about CP3's knee? He took a hard fall on that and-1, and it he hasn't been moving the same ever since.
