Clippers-Trail Blazers Preview

By ALAN FERGUSON

Posted Jan 27 2013 2:39AM

The Los Angeles Clippers didn't have too much trouble during Chris Paul's initial absence with a bruised right kneecap. It's been a different story this week.

It's unknown when the All-Star point guard will return, and the Clippers will try to avoid a season-high fifth straight loss Sunday night as they finish a home-and-home set with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Los Angeles (32-13) swept a three-game road trip earlier this month despite Paul's absence, but the club hasn't won since he aggravated his injury in a loss at Golden State on Monday.

The Clippers managed to erase a 14-point deficit Saturday in Portland, but then they blew a nine-point lead in the final 2:30 of a 101-100 defeat.

"Tough pill to swallow," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "We had an opportunity to steal this one and we couldn't convert down the stretch."

Los Angeles missed its final five shots, including two from former Blazers guard Jamal Crawford in the final 17 seconds. His last attempt, a 19-foot jumper, came with 0.9 seconds left.

"I'll take that shot 10 out of 10 and I'll make it nine out of 10," Crawford said.

Crawford finished with 19 points and has averaged 19.5 during his team's losing streak. Blake Griffin had 24 points, a career high-tying 10 assists and eight rebounds despite dealing with a sore left ankle.

Portland's Nicolas Batum, meanwhile, recorded his second triple-double in three games Saturday with 20 points, a career-best 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Rookie point guard Damian Lillard also scored 20 points.

Their efforts helped the Blazers (22-21) snap a three-game skid in the series and record a second consecutive win following a six-game losing streak.

"It's a better taste when you win the game," said Batum, who had his other triple-double in a loss to Washington on Monday. "I can't promise a triple-double every week, but I try to do something and help the team to win every game."

Batum had a team-best 23 points against the Clippers on Nov. 8, but Crawford, Paul and DeAndre Jordan each topped 20 in Los Angeles' 103-90 win. Griffin was held to seven points in that game, but he was one of three Clippers players with 20 in the most recent home matchup with Portland, a 98-97 victory March 30.

Paul also had 20, including the go-ahead layup with five seconds left. His absence would figure to make it much tougher for Los Angeles to avoid losing five in a row for the first time since Feb. 22-28, 2011.

The Clippers are also in danger of their first back-to-back home defeats since Nov. 3 and 5.

They'll want to be wary of J.J. Hickson, who has totaled 57 points on 25-of-37 shooting (67.6 percent) in his last two road games against the Clippers. Blazers scoring leader and All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, meanwhile, has just 26 points on 38.7 percent shooting (12 of 31) in the two matchups this season.

Griffin has double-doubles in eight of his nine career games against Portland.

Vinny has to make an adjustment either sit Green and start Hill so the bench won't have to go small or change close out unit

Aw, why would you want to do that when he brings so much to the conversation?

Don't worry, Bryan... as soon as we get on another winning streak, he'll disappear again.

I thought the 'R' word was unacceptable here, but maybe it's become just like the 'N' word... ie: "That's OUR word, and only WE'RE allowed to use it".

Are you serious? Green was HOT hot hot hot, coming out of the gate, I don't know why Vinny didn't play him more, but he was the reason, we were hanging around in the 1st qtr(him and Blake)

I thought Vinny made some good decisions, now that I think of it, Crawford should've been given a foul on a previous play, and that mid range J is his sweet spot. But how can we NOT score and let them score 7? That still baffles me.

There is only one statement I need to say:

Defend The Three Ball!

I feel like all we need is one win to break this monkey on our backs. One win to get back to the energy and attitude we had once before.

By the way, Blake's been averaging 5.3 assists a game for the last 11 games now. I wonder if she shouldn't start bringing the ball down the court like Lebron or Durant.

I'm at this game tonight......think we will be ready to get back on the right path. After such a close loss last night, it's time to welcome the blazers to lob city.

Go clips!

First the "R" word is "retarded" It's like the "F" word for gays. NBA players have been fined for using it. They prefer "Mentally challenged" or "Developmentall disabled" Thanks Cleepers

This may be a blessing in disguise. We need to learn how to win without CP3. BG has become a one man wrecking crew like Barkley says. Crawford needs to pass the ball. Paul obviously makes everyone better BUT-

What if he's hurt in the PO's and there's no Billups? VDN needs to find other ways to win.

He has to learn to trust DJ period. Bledsoe's OK but does he make guys better? Would Hill or LO as point forwards be better?

You can't depend on ISO's. BG is stepping up Crawford should be in all star contention, Barnes is in contention for 6th of the year. Bledsoe "maybe the best bench PG" What's the problem?

calm the f*** down with your trolling. it will be a blowout in our favor. but in order for that to happen, we need to rebound better from the start and make sure we rotate the ball on offense. we lost last night because the offense became stagnant in the last 3 minutes. simple ball movement will carry us. and yes, close out on the shooters on portland

The good thing is we can do without CP3 probably. We are up against some pretty weak competition but we are so inconsistent offensively and with our perimeter defense I am not so sure.

I'd like to see VDN start Hill at PG tonight. Lets the team go back to their normal rotations and takes some of the pressure off of Bledsoe.

As Green is obviously not the perfect fit in a starting five with EB,CB,BG &DJ Vinnie should try starting Barnes over him. As less as MB was shining lately, with Cp3 being out, he might get more to his old with EB in the starting 5. And what he did contibute lately in the 2nd unit Green can cover easy.

Could be a win win for both during CP3 is out when both perform better as of lately.

I like this idea too. We could even have Griffin trying to facilitate like he did last night. hopefully bledsoe coming off the bench again will play good.

I'm also guessing that the team would get into their sets better with Hill running the show.

Might be a good idea too, but with Hill being so slow lately I do not see us running a fast pace with him which we need so much for our transition game. Thats why Id prefer MB over Green and letting Hill getting more possesions in the 2nd unit.

I really liked the looks we got last night when Griffin had the ball at the free throw line. He does a great job of finding the open guy while the defense focuses in on him.

Yeah, Hill should be running the point late in the 4th just like he should've last night.

I actually don't mind the Lakers winning. I've grown to loathe the Thunder just as much, and their loss helps us in the standings IF the team can take advantage (which, considering how badly they've played the past few games, I strongly doubt).

I'm sure ESPN will have wall-to-wall coverage of the Lakers tonight.

It only took Kobe half the season to realize that the Lakers don't win when he goes iso all the time and takes 30+ shots. But I doubt his restraint will last. His ego is too large.

Ebled gota do a better job on lillard, can't let him go for 20pts again, LA will surely have a better game, he ain't a AS reserve for nothing

Starting hill is not a bad idea so ebled can go back to being an impact beast off the bench, but I wouldn't mess with the starting lineup too much by starting Barnes over green

If Jasen Powell worked for the Bulls, there wod be no talks of Rose coming back at all this year.

Same exact **** from the past few games is starting up already. Even contested threes are falling against us, can't box out, trading baskets at best.
