Post subject: Will we get OJ Mayo? It depends on New York  PostPosted: Jun 16, 2008 - 11:11 AM PST

All the speculation about who we will draft so far is mostly about the players who are ranked somewhere close to the 7. But the player who falls may be the one we actually draft. The player who is ranked at 3 or 4 may be who we get at 7. That player may be OJ Mayo. OJ is holding a workout in Chicago and is not inviting the 3 small market teams who are now in the 3, 4, and 5 spots in the draft and is reportedly snubbing them, telling them to not draft him, and how unhappy he will be if he is. That puts OJ being drafted by either New York or the LA Clippers, who are invited to the Chicago workout. If New York passes on OJ, the Clippers will not. They will look at his dropping into their laps as a gift. Because of his tenure at USC, he will also sell tickets.

i guess it would be great to pick him as he is a solid player but his attitude seems questionable. I mean I don't know if it's ok to say "I don't want 'blank team' to draft me and if they do I will cause trouble. What if we pick him and then he becomes unhappy with us? Rather have someone who is ready to work hard and appreciates the opportunity.
But again for all i know we could pick him and he'd be the the best thing that ever happened to us....

There are reports that he is just fine staying in LA. He does, however, want to be on a big stage in a big town and not banished to obscruity in Memphis or wherever. The most important thing that happened today in that Galinari has decided to stay in the draft. Just this weekend he said he would not stay in the draft unless he had a committment from a team with a pick in the top 10. New York has been linked to Gallinari because their new coach was the coach in Italy for Gallinari's Dad and has close family ties. If Mayo has indeed scared away the teams with the 3, 4, and 5 picks, and New York is going for Gallinari at 6, that drops OJ Mayo right into our laps at 7. Actually, how could we be that lucky?

I think it is unlikely that OJ would fall all the way down to us us at #7, in fact, I've been reading that his stock is rising, so much so, that Miami may pick him instead of Beasley (WOW). If he does fall to us, that would be INCREADIBLE (although unlikely).

If Mayo is available at #7, how about we consider trading that pick to the Nets. This would combine several topics that have be posted on CTB:

    1) LAC does not need another young stud, they need another good vet to help keep EB engaged.

    2) NJ is in a big market to satisfy OJ. The Nets could use a backcourt scorer.

    3) They may consider trading Mo Williams, or how about Devin Harris (or Richard Jefferson)?

    4) Certainly they would agree to swap picks as well to get their hands on a #7 who should have gone at #4

If Mayo is available at #7, I say we draft him and KEEP him. He should be able to contribute immediately. And if we can get a Calderon or Hinrich, that will round out a pretty good starting five.

I really think he could be an interesting PG...Definetelly is a guy who I would love to have. He's young, strong and has PG skills. I would go for this guy. He has played along Kidd and it obviously has hindered his minutes but he seems to me a very interesting player. He still has to explode as a player...Your opinions??

Congrats ether for your idea. I love it!

strictly my opinion. my gut feeling and i hope i'm wrong.

Kwami Brown + 1 year at SC = OJ Mayo

OJ's up side is all there and we all recognize it.

OJ's down side is all personal problems that don't pan out in the NBA.
