Tie breaker no.1 says division winner wins tie breaker

So even though we lost series to Denver, we still got tie breaker

Help me understand. We still have one more game against Memphis so the best they could do is to tie the season series. Denver has already beaten us in the tiebreaker department. What is the next tiebreaker against Memphis if they tie up the series at 2-2?

I think it was kind of a mistake by Collins not to put Nick in early. Surely, he knew NY played for us last year and he had, like, 30 points against us earlier this season. Whatever.

Look, it's not as if we didn't lose some games with Green starting. But we looked a LOT better with Green at the start. I've been saying it all night, but I'll say it again. Start Green the rest of the season.

By the way, while the game was going on, NBA Game Time had a special report comparing BG to Dominique Wilkins. It was pretty cool.

Read the link I just posted under tie breaker basis. Tie breaker no. 1. We have homecourt with a tie against Denver and or Memphis cause we won our division. Memphis and Denver will not win their division

Is that just for the seeding? What about HCA? I figured that the only way we get HCA over Denver if we play them is if we finish with a better record.

Wow... Clippers, Nuggets and Grizzlies actually have identical records win percentage wise? What's separating the teams now is that the Grizzlies have 1 less loss and Denver owns the tiebreaker over the Clippers so despite identical records they own the tiebreaker and HCA.

It's for homecourt as well.

Hawaii that's ONLY for seeding, not HCA. If we have a tied record with the Grizzlies we have HCA based on us winning season series so far (play them one more time with a chance to clinch). Denver has us on the season series so if they tie us at season end they get HCA over us, no matter what the seeding says.

It just makes me sad that we were once up with San Antonio and OKC and now are fighting for our playoff lives with Memphis (again) and Grizzlies. Just makes me bummed. We really need to turn it up and get some more signature wins. Haven't had one since before the break and they need it for confidence reasons.

What if the Grizzlies tie the season series? What is the second tiebreaker?

It's sad... but it's up to us. We can master our own destiny. If not by getting home court advantage, then we can impose our will in the playoffs. There was a time earlier this season when we were the best team in the league. I honestly believe that. It's up to us to come back to that in the post season.

Just heard on Clippers live about Brook Lopez's HUGE game. Which of our bigs needs to take him for most of the game? DJ got torched last time, absolutely incinerated, so I'm not hot on that particular match-up. These are the only moments when I wish Blake was a little longer, so he could take him.

d. Home Court Advantage:For purposes of home court advantage, ties will be broken pursuant to the procedures used for breaking two-team ties for playoff position.

In the nba website I posted, under two-team tied, it says (1) Division leader wins tie from team not leading a division.

Am I reading it wrong?

Now *that* was more like it. Like earlier in the season, the starters did a good job, and the bench guys came in and finished things off. Just what doctor ordered after heavy minutes by the stars last night. GREAT game by Chris Paul- defensively and offensively. He was just masterful out there. Blake had trouble getting free, but still had a good game finding his teammates and rebounding. Willie and Caron provided solid scoring #'s, while DJ and Hollins did a good job defensively. Ryan especially was so energetic- he and Waynes provided exactly what the bench was lacking lately- quickness and explosion. Waynes also looked very well feeding his teammates.

  1. Brian Sieman just said on clippers that we'd have the HCA over Denver if we finish with the same record as them because we are division winners and they're not. The question is, what if Denver has the better record at the end of the season?

So I was reading the nba.com website correctly!

Denver has hca in that instance

Oh... so winning the division overrides a series loss? If so than it IS indeed beneficial to win the division. Although we have to have a tie or better for that to happen obviously.

Yeah that does help us. Hca is significant for us to beat either teams

On the bench! Wink Good to see Hollins get some time and same with Waynes. They gave the second unit the boost that was desperately needed.

Yes. Our biggest fear right now should be finishing behind Denver. Like in 2005-06, the Nuggets finished as the 3rd seed, but we finish with a better record as the 6th seed so we had the HCA.

Side-note: We should start rooting for the Warriors and the Rockets now to make sure those Fakers stay away from the 6th seed. Let them get their asses kicked by the Spurs or the Thunder.

Good point. Yeah that helped us.

I would love for that to happen to the lakers. Keep them at 7 or 8

Agree 100%- Wayne's play was exactly what the 2nd unit needed. Hollin's energy was huge as well.

Yup Caron played very well- he got a couple of big offensive rebounds when the game was still close. And that big dunk really energized the team.

Never mind. I keep forgetting that Memphis won't win their division. So if it was a 3-way tie between Memphis, Denver, and us, we get the 3-seed?

1st tie break is division winner. 2nd is head2head. 3rd is division record if 2 teams in same division. 4th is conference record

b. More Than Two Teams Tied

(1) Division leader wins tie from teams not leading a division.

We're 8.5 games ahead of the Warriors. We have 13 games left. They have 12 games left. Our magic number to win the division is 5 (combination of Clipper wins and GSW losses). So if we win 3 more games and they lose 2 more games, we clinch (or any combination you can think of).

And our magic number to clinch a playoff berth is 2. If we win 2 or the Jazz lose 2, or we win 1 and they lose 1, we're officially in!

Chris Paul doesn't like to talk about injuries, especially this time of year, but there was no hiding the kinesiology tape that was around his left shoulder and the ice pack taped to the shoulder before the game. In fact, it was so painful Paul could hardly put his shirt and jersey on before the game on his own without wincing in pain

Hollins and Wayns FTW!

Sometimes it takes the end of the bench to remind the starters what energy is.

I didn't like Blake's attitude tonight. Staring down refs and whining about everything. Not a good time to be making enemies 4 weeks out from the playoffs.

Good solid win, though.

i dont blame griffin, he got hammered last night by thompson and cousins and tonight allen, young and allen kept grabbing him every time he was in the paint. you get fed up. thats where vdn has to step up and get a tech to say "enough is enough". wayns seems like a keeper. i like his energy. hollins was a beast and so was butler and cp3. excellent, much needed win. on to saturday. its going to be tough, but we should beat brooklyn.

You're right about him getting roughed up, but then he has to give it back and make them pay in other ways. He did pretty well finding other guys for good shots, but he could have gotten his revenge setting harder screens and a couple of times I saw him just wandering around disengaged on the defensive end.

The real problem, though, is taking it out on refs... that is NOT going to help the team come playoff time. You gotta go just as hard at your guy as he does at you and force them to make a call before things get out of hand.

Just watched the replay. I really like Wayns, he could be a hidden x factor for us. Liked what I saw from Hollins too, hopefully enough to convince VDN to use him if Odom is struggling.

@cleepers, i agree, but at the same time the coach should keep reminding the refs of the bs he deals with. id like to see bg set hard picks, but he always gets offensive fouls if he does that.

what I liked about wayns is that he guards his man so close it looks air tight and he is SUPER fast. did anyone else think he played great defense?

Meh, Blake was ridiculously exhausted last night. You could tell. Even his one dunk wasn't a typical Blake dunk. When you're exhausted, you tend to be cranky too. Yet he still played hard. No big deal. He has a couple of days to rest now.

Yeah, he looked a lot like Bled out there. Considering how cheap it'll be and how banged up we are at PG, it's good value to keep him around for the rest of the year and even offer him a non-guaranteed deal for next year. Working under CP3, he could make Bled expendable with a full year left on his deal, which would net us more in return.

Lamar needs to be kept on a short leash. If he's not bringing it, Vinny needs to sit him.

Agree. He really needs to start picking it up every game. When he's aggressive offensively, we're much better.

The Nets game will be interesting though. If I'm remembering correctly, D Will has typically fared better in the games where he and CP have gone head to head. I'd like to see CP change that on Saturday.

I anticipate being chastised for this, but is it possible we are better without Billups? Right now, he is not making shots, is a TO machine, and is a snail on D.

I get he is a clutch playoff monster, but right now, I do not see him getting to the level of fitness to contribute.

Yeah Chauncey can still play, but he is definitely not nearly as quick as in the past. And I think because he hasn't run the team that much, that's why there are those extra turnovers. Lately his shot hasn't been falling, and that really puts on a damper on his effectiveness. And he hasn't been able to draw as many fouls either, which was a great attribute of his.

But he can still be a big factor but probably not on a consistent basis- understandably due to his age. He simply can't play many minutes any more- as we've seen with E-Bled out, Chauncey's had to play extra time and the result was the groin strain.

Is the team better w/o him? It'll take some digging statistically. But the team does not appear to be worse.

I actually said on another board today that I'd rather see Green starting again. Unless Billups is having a really hot shooting night, which hasn't happened for a while, he really doesn't contribute much.

I also think the team tries to go to Chauncey on offense too much when he's out there. At this point, the way he is physicially, he's best filling the role of spot up shooter. When he tries to take someone off the dribble or post up, it usually ends badly for us.

With Green, he just plays his role and doesn't try to do too much. Chauncey (and the team as a whole) would be better off if he did the same thing.

I know you guys are more worried about the 3rd seed, but we actually have a shot at the 2nd seed especially the way OKC has been playing lately.
