Clippers-Spurs Preview

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO

Posted Mar 28 2013 11:19PM

Reaching 50 wins is rather routine for the San Antonio Spurs, but it's uncharted territory for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Winning three straight regular-season games in San Antonio would also be a new feat.

The Clippers look to clinch the best season in franchise history Friday night when they face the Western Conference-leading Spurs, who continue a daunting late-season stretch.

San Antonio (54-17) has reached the 50-win mark in 14 straight seasons, and has already assured itself a spot in the playoffs along with Los Angeles (49-23).

While the Clippers are going to the postseason in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1991-92 and 92-93, they're on the brink of doing it as the best team in franchise history.

Los Angeles tied the team's 38-year-old record for wins in a season Wednesday while setting a mark for the most on the road at 21 as it beat New Orleans 105-91.

With 10 games left in the regular season, the Clippers are also closing in on their first division title, leading the Pacific by 8 1/2 games on second-place Golden State.

"At the beginning of the season, we set some goals for the team," coach Vinny Del Negro told the team's official website Tuesday. "Obviously, to win the division. It's all about improving throughout the season. I expect a lot from this team, but more importantly they expect a lot from themselves. We just want to play as consistently as possible, count them up at the end and hopefully be healthy going into the playoffs."

Chauncey Billups, who has been limited to 20 games this season, may be the main concern after aggravating a nagging right groin strain and exiting in the third quarter Wednesday. It's unclear if he'll play Friday.

Chris Paul will, and though he struggled against San Antonio in the playoffs last season, he has totaled 55 points and 19 assists in the Clippers' back-to-back regular-season wins at the AT&T Center.

Los Angeles is one of only four teams to win there this season after posting a 92-87 victory Nov. 19 as it held San Antonio to a season low-tying 35.4 percent from the field.

The Spurs, who lead the conference by 1 1/2 games over Oklahoma City, have won 27 of 29 at home since that defeat. They extended their winning streak at the AT&T Center to six games by defeating Denver 100-99 on Wednesday, beginning a three-game homestand that ends Sunday against Miami.

San Antonio has won three of four to begin this season-ending 15-game stretch that includes 11 meetings with teams currently in playoff position.

"The schedule that we have is something that should be embraced and considered a great opportunity," coach Gregg Popovich said, "because it's like taking a final exam every day or most days. To get ready for the playoffs, understanding the physicality, aggressiveness and competitiveness that's necessary night after night in the playoffs."

Having a healthy Tony Parker would help. Parker sprained his right middle finger late in the third quarter against the Nuggets, but returned to finish with 18 points and 11 assists and is expected to play Friday after X-rays were negative.

Parker totaled 15 points as the Spurs lost twice to the Clippers in November, but scored 31 points while sinking 12 of 16 from the floor in a 116-90 win at Los Angeles on Feb. 21. He also helped limit Paul to four points on 1-of-6 shooting in that victory.

Tim Duncan is averaging 25.0 points, 14.8 rebounds and 3.4 blocks over the past five home games. Duncan had 20 points and 14 boards against the Clippers there in November.

^ Me too. I expect CP and Jamal to both have huge games. We've beaten the Spurs twice this season already 8) I like our chances.

Would love for that to happen. To beat the spurs though our 3pt defense needs to be sharp. That's probably the biggest key since they have so many shooters.

^ It's been better these last couple of games. I just don't want us to over-commit. It's a fine balance.

Yeah, the Clippers HAVE to still be bothered by the last meeting with the Spurs. You just know CP3 and company heard ALL about the commentary during that game...particularly all that crap about Parker being a better point guard than Paul.

If we're not motivated to play these guys this time...

the two wins were early in the season before our 3 point defense was exposed. The third game was very telling because popovich went straight at our weakness and blew us out by more than 25 points. This time we do need to win, the team has had some good results with zone defense and we cant afford to lose this game. I kno paul will show up, but we will need some key games from willie green, butler, and DJ. It cant be a one man show or ths purs will make this a win

Our team better come in pissed and with energy. Last time the Spurs embarrassed us on our own home court. Time to return the favor! Gives thy a finger

CP3 better dominate the matchup against TP and BG has to step up and be dominant. Of course hopefully the rest of the team is fired up as well. That was an embarrassing loss.

If we don't show up in a big way it means our team doesn't have heart.

Most important game of the year. We NEED to prove we can still beat elite teams! Seriously a loss tonight will be devastating

Last I checked.....we beat them when we were hot before the All Star break and they put us in check after the Al Star break.

Hangover or not, they are the best team in the West.

I am curious to see if POP is going to be resting his starters for this game, or the Miami game on Sunday.

I am sure that CP3 can own Parker, but who on the Clippers is going to stop Danny Green from bombing 3's in the corner?

We have the talent and the bench, they have the coach who is voulumes better than his understudy.

I just hope that the momentum from Wed carries us into today and hopefully tomorrow.

We don't have to win tonight for me to be happy, just go out and prove you can beat this team and make them think twice about over-looking us in the playoffs.

Would be interesting to see DJ play a big part in a win tonight, he's been on fire lately. Wait, did I just give DJ a compliment? I thought if you hate someone that you have to relentlessly slander them till you're blue in the face. But wait, doesn't that mean you can't have a preconceived notion of a person? My head is all turned around.

Stop the 3 and keep them moving so they can't set and shoot.

Time to mess with Texas

Too bad Vinny isn't smart enough to start Bledsoe at SG. He's done a hell of a job on the Spurs guards defensively and Green may get torched bad.

Yep. Small sample size, but Bledsoe has done well (PER) @ that position. Maybe next year.Wink

Yeah I heard that during the Dallas game. Something like 40-41%. Willie Green was our next best at like 38%.

Bledsoe shoots 42.2% from 3, he doesn't shoot it that much but he's definitly better than last year.

Exactly why it's not a good idea to use that as the sample. It's too small of a sample size but we've all seen it with our own eyes... Bledsoe does a great job against the Spurs guards and him and CP3 have stretches where they are terrific together defensively and offensively.

I just know Bledsoe does a hell of a lot better job than Green or Billups chasing their shooters around and he does a great job denying Parker and Ginobili the ball. Lately he's been off so nothing is guaranteed but I hope Vinny tries him early for perimeter defense.

Not to mention our first 50th win ever to come on the road, against the Spurs would make it that much more special. Ralph on pregame even just called it the best win of the year so far if we win.

Popovich on CP3: "He's a mean, nasty man... I don't know if there's anybody more competitive in the league than that little dude."

Popovich jokes someone must have stolen CP3's toys when he was little, because he plays like he's getting back at the world.

Regarding us hanging a banner when we win the Division,,,,I just noticed SA has a single banner for Division (with a butt load of years on it) next to a banner for Conf Champion (again,,a few numbers) then individual banners for Companionship. My point,,we should hang a banner,,if it is good enough for them it is good enough for us.

Blake hesitating BAD on shot, Spurs get easy cut to get a bucket. Bad start. Blake needs to look at the rim as Mike Smith says. Stop fu**ing passing dude.

DJ the last 3 or 4 games has been fantastic, can't lie. If he keeps it up and steps up DEFENSIVELY this game to lead us to a win.. he deserves huge props. He can't vanish in the games that count. He's not defending the rim enough.
