PLAYA VISTA, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Clippers don't have any championship banners up at Staples Center, and Blake Griffin wants to keep it that way until they win an NBA title.

The Clippers' franchise, dating to their inception as the Buffalo Braves in 1970, has never won a division title. But the team's next win, or a loss by the Golden State Warriors, will give the Clippers their first Pacific Division championship.

More On The Clippers

It's a moment Griffin is looking forward to, but he hopes the team doesn't hang a banner commemorating the occasion in the same rafters that hold the Los Angeles Lakers' 16 NBA championship banners.

"I kind of have bigger goals than that for the team," Griffin said. "I think the team has bigger goals than that. We expected to win the division. We didn't come into this season thinking, 'Oh, it would be great if we could win the division.' We expected it. It's something to be proud of and maybe there's a banner that goes up (in the training facility), but it's not something that needs to go up in Staples [Center], and we don't need to hang our hat on that."

Every NBA team hangs division championship banners except for the Lakers and Boston Celtics, winners of 23 NBA titles. The Los Angeles Kings, who won the Stanley Cup last season and share Staples Center with the Lakers and Clippers, hang division and conference title banners.

Griffin's opinion wasn't shared by teammate Caron Butler. Butler, who has played for the Lakers, believes the Clippers should commemorate their first division title and 50-win season with a banner.

"For the first time, yes," Butler said. "It will be a special moment in history. Winning over 50 games and winning the division. Acquiring guys like Chris Paul and Blake Griffin and having the roster that we have, the expectations have soared through the roof. We're trying to build some momentum for years to come."

Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said he wouldn't have an issue with a banner being raised for a division title, but didn't have a strong opinion either way.

"I haven't thought a lot about it," Del Negro said. "Whenever you do something first, it's very important to try and start a tradition. You have to start somewhere. Let's start with 50 wins. That's not enough for us, we want more. Let's win the division. That's not enough for us, we want more. That's our mindset."

I disagree with him. Put it up, and look at the banner for motivation. Motivate yourself to get the conference title, and then eventually a championship.

We should put a banner up of the stats of Blake's performances in the last 2 weeks, that might put a fire under his ass.

I like that attitude. But given this franchise's history, I think it's good to have something displayed in the arena other than the light projection of the Clippers logo.

Somebody mentioned we should put one up for the first time, then just add the years onto it. One banner for all the division titles that are coming, one for the conference (adding each year), then individual championship ones.

I like that idea best.

Put it in practice facility at least.

I agree with Caron that we should put it in Staples. Since all NBA teams except Boston and the Lakers hang division championship banners up, it would not be awkward or abnormal to hang one up. This is our building as well.

But definitely hang it in the practice facility.

Some of us have been watching this team before Blake was born,,,I say it is our call not his. Besides,,San Antonio does it and if it is good enough for for us.

It would be an embarrassment to the Clippers organization to put up a Division title banner. I know a lot of teams do it like the Knicks and Celtics, but if you share a building with the Lakers, you better only be putting up NBA Championship banners. The Clippers can put the Division title banner up in the ladies room.

Only the Celtics and Lakers don't hang them. If we don't, it seems like we are spoiled little shits and only put up Championship banners even though we don't have any. Celtics and Lakers have earned the respect not to do it, we are just posers if we think we are better than that.

This. Stop pretending we have a great history of winning like no one else.

I'm pretty sure the Celtics hang the division titles up too. They got like a million banners hanging up and most of them are division ones. The Celtics also retire numbers for like every player that ever made an all star game.

If the Celtics hung the division banners they would have 17 championship banners, 20 retired numbers(all on 3 banners though), and 21 division banners. That's enought to fill up TD garden and MSG.

This decision shouldn't have to be based on what the Lakers do or don't do. It's our first division banner for the franchise, and that's a proud moment. I say hang it up!

17 banners + 3 sets of banners for the retired numbers. So yeah, they don't have division banners.

Just hang it up. Who cares? You have to start somewhere. Not every team is like the Lakers or Celtics.

I could care less what this guy wants. The franchise has been a joke for like 80% of the time it's been a franchise. Put up what you earned.

And honestly, we don't have anything. We have no championships, no retired jerseys and our only MVP was in Buffalo. We have to start somewhere. In 10-15 years I am sure we'll have plenty of banners up there showing we won the conference, division and hopefully the title.

I don't care what anyone else has to say, that's something you worked hard for and there's a good chance the Clippers never win a title with Blake Griffin. Countless NBA stars and legends haven't won a championship but that doesn't mean they didn't bust their butts out there and didn't have great careers.

I am a fan, and I want to see it up there. This banner could basically be the turning point for this franchise, a good sign of great things to come.

The Clippers first banner doesn't matter what level it is is something to feel great about. The Chris Paul trade could have easily never happened and the Clippers wouldn't be in this conversation right now.

HANG IT UP IN THE PRACTICE FACILITY!!!!!!

Even the Avengers, and Sparks hang CHAMPIONSHIP banners

Kings have a championship banner as well (in addition to CONFERENCE banners)

Not only the LAKERS, but even those other teams have set the bar.

Don't lower it!

Gotta start somewhere...

So the Warriors are the only Pacific team that has not won the division in the 21st century.

Must. Hang. Banner.

Hopefully we can hang more than one! Western Conference Champs banner and NBA Champs banners would be nice too.

Can't wait to stand up and point to our banner(s) next season when we play the Lakers

When asked, CP3 said let the fans decide to hang it or not.

I'm for hanging it in Staples, I'm a 14 year Clips fan, I would like to see some red, white and blue in the rafters.

It's been awhile since I last posted, but I agree with the majority of you all...let's hang a banner up, or at least as someone earlier suggested, do what the Spurs do with divisional championships--hang a single banner listing the seasons in which we win the Pacific. Who really cares what the Lakers' fans think in regards to us wanting to hang a divison championship banner--it's ours, we should EMBRACE it. Next task--a 2013 Western Conference championship banner.

By the way, the Bulls hang banners for all their division, conference, and NBA championships; the 1995-96 title banner has a "72-10" mini-banner attached underneath. The Heat have all of their Atlantic and Southeast division championship banners alongside their two NBA title banners.

Yes, San Antonio may do it but they dont share their building with a co-tenant that has more accomplishments than them. I think most of us have mixed opinions on whether we should hang the banner or not, but this all just brings up the need to find our own home . We need to get out of staples

The Kings, the real owners of Staples Center, have a division banner hanging from the rafters. **** the Lakers.

If we do hang the division championship banner in Staples, I wonder when that would be.

The Clippers should hang the banner in the practice facility and make it an open invite for Clipper fans. I'll fly from Denver to see that.

I think too much was made of BG's comment...like he was adamant about it or something. If you listen to the interview they asked him what he thought, he seemed to ponder a bit while answering. Basically just making the point that he aspires for more than the Division title...but it didn't seem like a big deal.
