NBA playoffs: Los Angeles Clippers vs. Memphis Grizzlies preview

By JOE RESNICK Posted Apr 29 2013 7:17PM

LOS ANGELES (AP) Now that they've had a couple of days to digest those back-to-back losses the suddenly rejuvenated Grizzlies shoved down their throats in Memphis, the Clippers are back home and eager to swing the momentum back in their favor in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series.

"Tomorrow's the biggest game of the season for us. We've got to win this game," All-Star point guard Chris Paul said Monday at the team's Playa Vista practice facility.

"We hoped to go undefeated throughout this whole thing, but this definitely makes us stronger. Now it's a three-game series. So we've got to come out with more energy, obviously, and with the same intensity in Game 5 as we did in Game 1 and 2. We've got to fight and scratch and play the way we know we can."

That will require a dramatic reversal by the Clippers, who were outplayed at both ends of the court by Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and Co. during Games 3 and 4. The 21-point rout on Saturday that evened the series at two games apiece represented the most lopsided postseason victory in the history of the Grizzlies franchise.

But the Clippers don't feel the Grizzlies have gotten under their skin and into their heads. All they have to do is remind themselves of last season, when they beat the Grizzlies in the opening round with a Game 7 triumph at Memphis.

"That hasn't been the issue. The issue's been the execution," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "They've executed better than us the last couple of games at both ends, as we did the first couple of games. That's why it's all tied up. It really comes down to rebounding the basketball, second-chance points, not turning it over, and making plays in the fourth quarter."

"It starts with us on the defensive end - having a physical presence there, making sure where our coverage is, and just locking in and having the intensity level go up as the game goes on," Del Negro added.

All season, the Clippers relied on Paul, Blake Griffin, Caron Butler, DeAndre Jordan and Chauncey Billups - when he's healthy - to get the team off to fast starts and then let their deep bench widen the lead.

With the speed and quickness of reserves Jamal Crawford and Eric Bledsoe, the ferociousness and timely perimeter shooting of Matt Barnes, and the veteran savvy provided by forward Lamar Odom, that should have been enough to neutralize the presence of Randolph and Gasol, the NBA's defensive player of the year. But it hasn't turned out that way.

"It would probably be impossible to find another big-man combination like that in the league," Paul said. "They're like two old-school big guys. So it's going to take a collective unit. We can't just put all of it on our big guys. We all have to get in there and bang with them, and then we've got to run them. Those first couple of games here, we managed to get them into foul trouble."

One thing that has held the Clippers back has been the shooting of Butler and Crawford, who was runner-up for sixth man of the year.

"It's a matter of getting clean looks," Crawford said. "When you fight to get clean looks, that makes it a little bit more difficult. But we'll adjust. We've put in some new things and we saw some things that we can address."

In the first two games of the series, the Clippers had an 87-61 rebounding edge and resembled the team that knocked the Grizzlies out of the playoffs in the opening round last year. But once the venue shifted to Memphis, the Grizzlies turned into terrors on the boards while fast-breaking the Clips into submission.

Quincy Pondexter, who converted his missed free throw into a pivotal four-point play that helped Memphis win Game 3 and get back in the series, said the Grizzlies have to "Bring some of the mojo we built here in the Grindhouse, and hopefully we can get a win in the Staples Center before bringing it back home. We're a grit-grind team - defense, rebounding, getting stops. We kind of got away from that in games 1 and 2, and we're back to it right now."

The Grizzlies outrebounded Los Angeles 92-61 in the two games at Memphis - including a 27-9 margin on the offensive glass - and outscored them 44-6 in second-chance points.

"They played desperate basketball in Memphis, and we have to do the same thing now," Billups said. "That's why you work so hard for home court. If we had two games left in Memphis and one at home, then obviously the pressure would be on us. But it's not on us. We just have to make a few adjustments, but it's going to be our turn now to play with that same sense of urgency. We've got to box out, get after loose balls and compete in the fourth quarter."

No one has to tell the Grizzlies that they have to win at least once game in Los Angeles to advance to the next round. And with the increased confidence they've gained over the last two games, they have every reason to expect to.

"We've got to understand we are going into a hostile environment," said Tony Allen. "Staying together, playing hard, playing together, having great focus - I just think from one through 14 all guys are locked in. And I think when you have that kind of mindset going on the road, you are able to get wins."

Billups is the biggest tool on the team. STILL saying idiotic **** like "The pressure is on them not us". News flash moron but pretty much ALL of the pressure is on the team that give up a 2-0 lead and 2 straight losses back at home.

Im getting tired of his "not a big deal" act. Hell yes it's a big deal and they should treat EVERY SINGLE game like it's a big deal. I've been watching the Warriors and realized how bad our effort is in comparison. That team fights EVERY SINGLE play. Diving for loose balls, banging people up, setting hard screens.

That Billups mentality is exactly why we are tied 2-2 now instead of being 3-1 or 4-0.

I actually think us raising ticket prices are softening up our crowd because a lot of real fans can't afford these Laker prices. Now rich kids can go take their Instagram photos at a Clipper game but they don't want to look like they care too much by yelling and cheering on our team with real passion.

Eh 50 bucks for a ticket in 200s is about what you find everywhere during playoffs.

If they don't come out aggressive and with a cause then I think it's time to give up on this team this year and just watch the Heat win it all like we all think they will

I hope it is the loudest game. It helps when the 6th man and fans help the home team. Golden states homecourt is crazy loud. It definitely helps them.

I f***** hate Memphis fans, they boo at the tiniest things. Maybe that's why those refs give them so many ticky tack calls.

You guys pretty much know my history and how long I have been going blah blah,,but I will say for me hanging to ST is not easy.

I am retired, live off of a 401K that took a major crap twice. I save and scrimp for my ST seats for all my sports. I buy virtually nothing unless I can get it on one of those 18 months to pay, no interest deals (yeah I have tons of credit cards but don't want to pay interest and I won't spend my CDs for anything).

Then I sit to some young 20 somethings that are really great ST neighbors, but they are moving from the 200s to the 100s, because it was "only 1750 more" So that sort of supports you theory. I have to even go less next year due to price increase, and that was "only 500" dollars.

But I will also say, my seats are, until this year, the same price as they were 9 years ago. They market it different but I pretty much have always paid 34 to 35 a seat per game. BUT now the only reason I pay the same (until next year, it will be 40) is I sit far enough back to not be subjected to the fee they now impose for row 1 and 2,,and rows 3 to 6. But your point is very very valid. The only good thing is when they do look up from their phones, they cheer for our side.

And dude,,the picture taking is getting annoying because I sit on an aisle right by a tunnel and they are always in front of the tunnel taking pictures. In fact, you don't know how many times I have been asked to take the picture and crap,,I don't have nor have any idea on how to use a smart phone !

Yes, it's definitely a must win! Not being a pessimist, but realistically if we go down 3-2, we would most likely lose the series already. We just looked terrible in both games in Memphis. If both were super close then I wouldn't be so pessimistic. Let's just win tomorrow! Even if we get lucky I'll be happy!

I agree. The battle of the boards is a major indicator of who wins this series. Everyone needs to box out aggressively.

Yes, we need to be physical, play with energy and urgency. I'm hoping we do all those things without fouling too much and the refs call it fair.

It's not just on Blake and DJ on the boards. That's the key. Yes, they have to rebound, but EVERYBODY has to. We severely out rebounded Memphis because everyone grabbed boards. DJ had 8, Blake had 5, Caron had 6, Odom had 7, Bledsoe had 6....in fact everybody (except Ryan Hollins, ironically) had at least one rebound in that game.

Bad news: I'm sick as a dog.

Good news: I'll be at home recuperating, able to watch the game instead of working.

Help me feel better tonight, Blake, CP3, Caron, Chauncey, DJ, Jamal and the rest of the tribe! Take care of business!

We've GOTTA get the win tonight. When you think about it, that last regular season game at Memphis was practically a playoff game. Both teams NEEDED that win. And we TOOK it. We've got to do that tonight!

Can we make adjustments? Nothing I've seen has given me confidence. The last two games weren't really competitive. I feel like our front line is being exposed, not sure what will happen. Fingers crossed bc if we survive this series there is a path to the finals

Me too. Yesterday I was so nervous that I bought tickets to the game. For this game I'm going to feel better being there. No commercials, no replays, no stats to analyze. Just going to be there to scream my ass off and hope we can get the win.

Defense, rebounding, and we need 10+ point games from Chauncey and Caron. 15+ from Jamal, a couple hoops from Bledsoe and maybe 10+ from Barnes would be great. Battle every possession, no giving up/jogging back on D, limit turnovers to under 12 or 13, gang-rebound, and WE WILL WIN.

well it looks like we've gotten flustered at memphis this series. I'd rather not take the chance, this is still win or stay home, in my opinion.

This is reminiscent of last year where most of the quarters or games memphis dominated the Clippers, but somehow we win. Their fans beleiving they will win, we need to stomp on them, i would love to win the series in memphis again like we did last year. Best feeling ever, to beat them with all their dissapointed and shocked faces.

So far, history shows that we do show up against Memphis when it REALLY matters. Game 1 last year to steal home court, Game 7 to close it out when we'd allowed them back in the series, the last regular season game this year to get home court... it just seems like we find it hard to generate that same intensity unless everything is on the line.

Can't be giving up 3-1 or 2-0 series leads because you never know when an injury or even a bad call can cost you that "last chance" game. Stop procrastinating clips and take care of business.

The key of the game is Blake neutralizing Z-Bo and Deandre pushing Gasol out of the paint as much as possible. And of course rebounding by EVERYONE. I would love to see more of Bledsoe and Vinny put more faith on him to fix his mistake. I shutter whenever I see Billups on the floor when his offense is nonexistence. I have respect for Big Shot, but he haven't shown me much to put faith on him on winning the game tonight. Overall, I think Clips will win this game and the series. Let's go Clips.

see, i dont even see anything resembling being flustered. its just that the team didnt come out as aggressive or with any of the urgency seen in games 1 and 2. add in the fact that shots werent falling and the game was an anomaly.

we should be fine as long as there's genuine urgency.
