I was thinking about it, if we can't get rid of a terrible contract and no one wants Butler or DJ's contract theoretically speaking, can't we use an amnesty on one of them to free up alot of cap space? This would help sign OJ Mayo and other free agents

no, we used our amnesty provision on Ryan Gomes last off season.

?! So how long til we can use it again?

How much was Gomes' contract anyways? I hope it was worth our amnesty.

Amnesty can only be used on one player. No more after that.

I believe his contract was $4mil with two years left.

One amnesty to use for the rest of time...?

What a waste to use on Gomes then.

New CBA should let teams at least amnesty once every new offseason or every other offseason.

DJ was signed AFTER the CBA so he couldn't be amnestied anyways. The only amnesty option the Clippers had at the time was I believe Gomes, Mo Williams, and Blake. Remember that amnesty could only be used in players that were on your roster before the new CBA was made.

I think teams can use an amnesty clause once every 5 years.

There was a one time amnesty, it isn't something that repeats

The way it worked was that between the 11-12 and 15-16 season, during the 7 days after the July moratorium, each team was allowed to amnesty ONE player that they signed BEFORE the 11-12 season.

Oh wow. that means no amnesty after 16-17.

I was hoping the amnesty clause can be used at least every year or every other year.

it's a one time thing bro, not a new rule or anything. it was just a one time thing after the new CBA

LoL, people were freaking out about how the Clippers needed to amnesty Gomes forever, and now it wasn't a good decision? Post after post just KILLING this dude! LoL! I always thought it was kinda weird to Amnesty only a 4 million dollar player, but hey.......the guy needed to go. I knew these types of comments were gonna come around sooner or later though.

Nothing wrong with using the amnesty on Gomes. We couldn't have used it on DJ anyway. Using it on Butler wouldn't be a bad idea in hindsight but its not like he is untradeable and Gomes was complete dead weight though we could have let him expire.

Like I said, he needed to go. It's just funny seeing people backpedal down the road, even if it's only a little........cause like I had mentioned before, people were just letting Gomes HAVE IT on CTB, LoL!

I honestly didn't think it was something that had to be done. This was how I felt a season ago not now. Gomes was terrible but 4m isn't THAT much but I wasn't against it either. I was fairly neutral. Not a bad move at all even in hindsight but I wouldn't have freaked out if we saved the amnesty either.

The risk of using the amnesty is that we might have a dire need for it later. Right now we don't though.

No, there is the stretch provision however which is close to amnesty.

The way it works is that if a team doesn't like a player's contract, they can apply the stretch provision. The player won't play for the team just like an amnesty. But the salary will be stretched to the number of years left on the player's contract time two plus one.

So for example lets say the clippers use it on Butler. Butler's contract is one year remaining for eight million. The team's cap hit would change from 8 million for one year to 2.6+ million for three years (1 x 2 + 1). Much much better and leaves 5.4 million this year to use as cap space.

Lets look at DJ. He has two years left at 22.5 million. That would change to five years (2 x 2 + 1). The cap hit then would be about 4.5 million for the next five years. That would gain about 6.5 million in cap this year.

If we did it with both players we could gain about 12 million in cap. That along with a few other tricks might make enough room to sign cp3 and dh12 if they were willing to take a bit of a paycut.

Interesting idea anyway.

Very interesting. I always knew there were some more strings to pull to adjust our cap and be smarter to obtain some new FAs.

Butler was signed during the new CBA. We could not amnesty Butler, it was never an option.

It was Gomes, Mo Williams, or Blake Griffin. Those were our only amnesty options.

Clippers need to find a home for Butler and DJ in the off season. Add in Bledsoe to sweeten the deal and bring in a better Center. Use any extra money you have to sign a starting SF even if it's for 1-2 years total.

If Gomes wasn't amnestied, the only other amnesty choice would have been Griffin, since Mo got traded. But then Blake got extended, so there wouldn't really be any options but Gomes...
