Rumor: Doc Rivers might step down as Celtics coach. If true, good fit for the Clippers?

USA TODAY Sports

This morning I noticed that the Celtics were trending on Twitter. So I decided to find out why and found that Chris Broussard was reporting that Celtics coach Doc Rivers believes "it is time for change."

Share (3) Tweet (5) 1 Comments

I know, I know it is Chris Broussard reporting this but this rumor has been going around for a few weeks now. As of right now, Doc Rivers remains uncommitted to coaching the Celtics next season. The one thing that stood out for me in the article, which you can find here, is the following:

If Rivers became available, he would immediately become the most coveted coach on the market. The Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers asked for permission to speak with Rivers about their coaching jobs last month, but Ainge refused to grant it.

There is a feeling throughout the league, however, that because of the closeness of their relationship, Ainge would allow Rivers to leave and go elsewhere if the coach requested it.

If Rivers is interested in coaching somewhere else next season, he needs to make a decision soon because the most favorable jobs will not remain open much longer. The Nets appear close to hiring Jason Kidd as their coach, and the Clippers are interviewing candidates this week.

One source with knowledge of the Clippers' thinking said Rivers almost certainly would become the the club's first choice if he becomes available.

If this "change" rumor turns out to be true and assuming Doc did not retire from coaching, would you want the Clippers to pursue him for the head coach position?

I think Doc would be a good fit and the only coach out there that we know could win it all. I like shaw and karl, but karl has been known to burn out in the playoffs and shaw is unproven altogether as a head coach.

This is ridiculous. It's not as if Karl just gives up in the playoffs or runs out of plays. It's not as if he all of a sudden is a deer stuck in headlights and can't do anything. Karl may have had some nice players, but he never had a Jordan, an Hakeem, a Kobe, a Shaq, or even a Duncan. The closest he came was Carmelo but obviously there were some differences between he and 'Melo. Plus, Melo hasn't exactly proven himself as a playoff superstar. When Karl led his Supersonics team to the Finals, they lost in 6 games to the vaunted Chicago Bulls. Something they had in common with teams like Portland, Utah, the Lakers, and Phoenix. Where they differ is Karl's Sonics didn't have players like Drexler, Malone, Magic or Barkley. I still believe with the right players Karl can win a championship.

I sense Doc Rivers rumors brewing, I know there is already a thread about him saying he thinks its time for a change. I believe he would be the best pick automatically since we know he could win it all. He would probably bring Pierce with him. He would definitely bring in a defensive mind set, maybe bring in Lawrence frank to be an assistant.

The only bad thing about Doc is that it would probably extend the wait a bit longer. I don't like passing on shaw, but we passed on Malone already and if we get a coach of that caliber out of the deal it would be worth it.

It's not to write off Karl, but he has been a first round out in the new (soft)nba consistently. Doc led his team to a championship and beat the hated lakers, even though I hate the Celtics too, he beat a dominant team to win it all. His teams consistently are ranked in the top 5 defensively, not something you can say about karl. Karl got in a shootout with the warriors, which I don't think anybody would think is a good idea. I'd be really happy if we got karl, but would want him to bring in the right assistants. If we got Doc I'd be buying playoff tickets for next season right now.

The only way this happens is with a trade, which is always scary. I don't like trading with teams like the Celtics and lakers, because they always do the swindling. jeff green for perkins looked like a steal for okc, but looking back now it looks like a reverse of that.

Chances are Danny Ainge has already been floating Doc around to other teams to see if they can get anything, so I'm guessing when we hear Doc isn't coming back that's about when a deal will get done. Hopefully with us.

lol. Doc would definitely be the best choice, but we need him to get released quickly and need to hire him ASAP. If we wait too long, we are putting all of eggs in one basket. The other candidates will be signed by other teams.

This is Doc Rivers... Ofcourse the Clippers should try and pursue. I'm not big on George Karl so if Doc Rivers is not coming to the Clippers than Brian Shaw or Nate McMillan should be the next Clippers head coach.

I like the idea of Doc Rivers coming to the Clippers, also I've been predicting that KG and Pierce will be in Clippers uniforms (coming off the bench) in the beginning of the season (more hopeful than anything). Doc would definitely be a big improvement and I think a great fit, but I agree with @lobcityhawaii. Doc needs to get released quickly and then hired by the Clippers almost simultaneously, hopefully it can happen some time this week. Karl is a coach I would like the Clippers to stay far away from, he's a good coach but not what we need.

I like it, but not sure what the % chance it is. Doc Rivers is a proven winner. I think I'd like him slightly over Karl, Hollins and Shaw, mostly because he would be able to help get Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to come over.

Was shot down by a ton of people. Didn't happen. Problem with going for Doc is due to contract stipulation he CANNOT coach ANYWHERE for 2 more years even if he leaves, unless Boston gives him permission. I doubt they let him go to a contending team who could win a ring in the next couple years.

Look on Hoopshype and Twitter over last few hours. Multiple sports writers including people from Boston Globe shot it down. Not about to go search through it all for you, I have no reason to lie. The source "Sportslegion" is a big fat nobody.

Didn't say you were, just throwing it out there for everybody that I'm being honest Razz. Anyways I'd LOVE Doc due to fit. I think he's the best available, even more so than Karl due to his tons of playoff success especially and having won a ring. I just don't want to wait a month for the process to play itself out. It's a luxury we don't really have.

Wow, that is so such a shitty contract. So effed up on so many levels, he's practically their slave if he does he's damned and if he doesn't he's damned.

They BETTER let him coach somewhere else. To restrict someone from their passion and career is crazy.

If Doc wants to go he's gone. It's idiocy to keep a coach who doesn't want to be there. As far as KG and Pierce coming here they will start. Even at their ages they are light years ahead of Butler and DJ. Do we aant a team of Chauncey Billups' and have to rebuild. We don't have the young talent at SG and Center to replace them. In two years we're screwed.

Maybe it's a gamble, Doc vs Scott because Shaw won't wait.

Well I read that Ainge loves the guy so WOULD likely let him leave if he wants to. So it's not like we have no hope. Just saying we better hope the Clippers/Celtics have a solid relationship because the Celtics have 100 percent control. Wouldn't be surprised if the demand Eric Bledsoe for Doc Rivers or something.

If we resurrected stuffed and mounted Red Auerbach Diamond Don would still hire him. DTS will pay whatever it takes. The problem isn't the $$$ it's his f'd up business ethics.

REMEMBER CHRIS IS AN UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT. If DTS goes on the cheap, CP goes to Texas

Doc Rivers would be the top choice of the Los Angeles Clippers if he doesn't return to the Boston Celtics, according to sources.

The Clippers have not requested permission from the Celtics to interview Rivers.

Rivers has three seasons remaining on his contract with the Celtics at $7 million annually.

Donald Sterling could pay as much as $5 million per season, according to several executives.

The Celtics could ask for compensation in order for the clippers to hire Rivers.

Rivers has wavered over his decision on whether or not to return to the Celtics next season.

Not worth any compensation unless we get kg and pierce. If we did then a trade of even Bledsoe would be worth it if we guaranteed that Paul was resigning of course throw in dj too.

Insider:

A source told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard that Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers may feel it's time for a change. That report and others apparently has gotten to Rivers and he is expected to announce his decision sooner rather than later.

"Even when he signed the five-year deal, I don't think anyone there believed he was going to stay for the whole thing," a source tells the Boston Herald. "So who knows?"

Rivers is open to looking at other possibilities -- Los Angeles Clippers -- and whatever he decides, "he should be stating his intentions within the next several days," according to the newspaper.

Rivers, with three years and $21 million remaining on his contract, reportedly is concerned that his voice will start to be tuned out by the players if he stays on with the Celtics. That may be true, however the team will have a new look next season if Paul Pierce is waived by the end of the month and Kevin Garnett doesn't return.

"Look, something's got to happen with this soon. Nobody wants to put anyone else in a bad situation, says another source."
