In addition to inviting Brandon Davies to play on their Summer League squad, the Clippers have also signed the undrafted free agent to a partially guaranteed one-year contract, reports Sean Deveney of the Sporting News (via Twitter).

Davies, a 21-year-old power forward, played four seasons at BYU, averaging 17.7 PPG and 8.0 RPG in 36 contests during his senior year. The BDA Sports client was ranked 63rd among this year's prospects by Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com and 90th by ESPN.com's Chad Ford, so it's not shocking that he wasn't selected on draft night.

Nice- I had mentioned Brandon Davies in the draft thread. 7'2" wingspan and can shoot the mid-range, so will be kind of a stretch 4 for us I suppose. Hope he turns out better than Trey Thompkins.

Not to worry, if he stays with the club he'll probably see as much playing time as our last rookie big not named Blake. wink

Supposedly, but he's a power guy as well who can score inside, according to NBADraft.net:

Main knock on him is defense.

(trying not to offend any Mormons)

Isn't this the guy who was suspended by BYU for breaking Mormon law/ Chastity rules? He had sex with his girlfriend while he was a student. (Became pregnant i think?)

Glad he's getting a second look at the pro level. Looks like a pretty good player.

If he can develop into a decent NBA roll player that will be something special enough. Smile

With a partially guaranteed contract, isn't he just using up space under the hard cap that we could have used to have a better chance of bringing Barnes back? I hope he has something to actually contribute rather than just being cannon fodder.

What the Clips DON'T need is another "soft" inside player.

Not sure I like it much because he didn't do much in summer league but he's physical, young and a good worker so I suppose I'm okay with the team giving it a shot.

Clippers Depth Chart:

1.CP3-Collison-Wayns

2.Redick-Crawford-Green

3.Dudley-Barnes-Bullock

4.Griffin-Jamison-Davies

5.Jordan-Hollins-Mullens

Solid Team! I don't like the deal, but might as well give him a shot! I have learned not to overreact to 3rd String Signings! In the Playoffs It comes down to STARTERS! And if the Bench can come in and score to KEEP or GET the lead that is a SUPER BONUS! Our Bench has more scoring than ever before

Bledsoe- Energy,Strength, Quickness, Defense

Collison- Starter Capable, Mini-Chris Paul instead of the lost Mini-Bron in Bledsoe

Then Change out the Crackhead and The Twirly guy for Jamison or Mullens!

The SCORING LIMIT IS OUT THE ROOF! I can easily see the Clippers getting hot from Deep and beating the record for 3s in a game!

So I'm not going to overreact to this signing! Just another body and probably a guy you can package up with Willie or someone for a Trade at Trade Deadline!

Interesting. They must've seen more than I did watching the SL games....still, I can't help but like the kid. I'm happy for him, especially since he was undrafted and had that suspension in college.

Always good to have a couple of 'upside' kids learning from the vets. We lost one of those with Bled. You never know when it all might just click for a young player and he makes a major leap. Welcome aboard BD.

Yeah, we got real fortunate with Reggie Bullock. My guess is that he may become another "upside" player that hustles and plays good defense. Davies is still a question mark, but as of late the front office has done well with acquisitions. Davies may surprise us.

Davies signed a unguaranteed contract so he still has to earn a spot on the roster. The team can go in a different direction if the opportunity arises.

Clippers sign Brandon Davies -- now he just has to make the team

By Steve Perrin on Sep 5 2013

You may have seen the news today that the Los Angeles Clippers signed rookie free agent forward Brandon Davies. Davies is a 6'9 forward out of BYU who went undrafted back in June, but he was picked up by the Clippers for Summer League and has been working out with the team in Playa Vista all summer. There's a piece on Davies from Eric Patten over on Clippers.com.

If this doesn't really feel like news, that's because it's not. We knew that Davies had a deal with the team -- they just made it official today. Nor does the contract signing make it that much more likely that Davies will be on the opening day roster. His contract is unguaranteed and he'll still have to earn a roster spot in training camp.

The team now has 13 guaranteed contracts, plus Davies and Maalik Wayns on unguaranteed deals, for a total of 15 players under contract. For Davies and Wayns that means that they'll be in camp -- but it may not mean a lot more than that.

The Clippers will almost certainly start the season with no more than 14 players under contract, and it wouldn't shock me if they went with 13. They may still harbor hopes of getting under the luxury tax threshold of $71.748M (very difficult, but not impossible) but regardless they will still have to deal with the hard cap that is imposed on them at $75.748M. Either way, the Clippers don't have a lot of wiggle room. My feeling is that they will go ahead and be taxpayers this year -- but avoiding some salary now could allow them to take advantage of opportunities later, either with a veteran free agent or using the $2.6M trade exception they got in the Eric Bledsoe deal.

What chance does Davies have of actually making the team? Well, although we don't have any numbers on the contract yet, he's probably cheaper than a veteran's min player, so that works to his advantage. But after watching him in summer league in Vegas in July, I certainly didn't see anything that made me think he'd be in the NBA this year. I'd say he remains a real long shot to make the final cut.

Looking at the depth chart of the 13 guaranteed contracts, you would conclude that the Clippers still need a third string point guard and a sixth big -- so Wayns and Davies are certainly the correct placeholders for those spots. But after signing Byron Mullens and Antawn Jamison in the front court, the Clippers would seem to have a greater need for a veteran defender if they do sign another big.

Based on the videos of Davies, he seems to have an extremely high basketball I.Q. I think if he develops the confidence, he can become a very good role player for someone, whether it be us or another team. Also noticed he can finish with both hands down low which is a solid plus though, he looks to have heavy feet.

Added a poll- do you guys think Brandon Davies will impress enough to earn a spot on the roster for the first game of the season?

Davies is whatever to me. The biggest problem with the signing is even if he is capable of developing into a good player, will we ever see it? It's tough to develop a guy on a stacked team with a superstar at the same position. He's probably about 6th string at PF considering Doc likes to use SFs at the position and we have two of them that can do it.

If it's a training camp invite, no worries, give him a shot. But if this is because we're totally comfortable with our bigs depth and we just want to take a flyer and control the kid in D-league for a season, I don't really agree with this signing. Our bench bigs could be ok but we could have used another true PF with a realistic chance to be in the rotation and there's still some guys out there that would have cost almost the same money.

I still say not on opening roster and I still say they go with 14,but keep this guy for practice when we need to practice against bigger then 7 foot teams. Maybe in the future he is on the squad.
