Hey fellow clippers fans. I guess I'm a newer user in this forum, as I've only been lurking since 10/11 season (although sometimes contributing my ref-hate in game-day threads). Just thought I'd introduce myself.

If anyone's been following the offseason recently (which most of us have been), it's looking to become an exciting and hopefully fruitful upcoming season for the Clippers, however, there will be obstacles in the way.

With the decrepit Lakers losing in the Dwight sweep stakes, they'll become even less existent as our rivals or even our competition than last season.

However, this may not be as positive to us as it sounds, as the Rockets are assembling a strong core in Harden, Parsons, Howard and perhaps Josh Smith (a circulating rumor in the twittersphere).

Not only that, but the Golden State Warriors, a team that has no business being anything other than hated, has put together a Curry/Thomson/Iguodala/Lee/Bogut line-up; strong, even menacing on paper, but one that probably will be riddled with injuries.

The frail spurs will hopefully have an epiphany--they're too old, and the Thunder have lost another sixth-man, while also being stuck with an awful center (perkins) and a wistful bench.

This upcoming season will showcase the Clipper's at their all-time high (atleast since the McaDoo era, or so I've heard), but there will also be a larger pool of elite teams digging down for a playoff run in the West.

edit. Forgot about the Grizzlies (who doesn't?), I believe they just got rid of their coach, and are now going forward with an aging frontcourt in Zbo and Marc, sf - Tayshaun and sg - Tony Allen (who is also offensively inept) and a promising pg, something that every team seems to have now-a-days.

TL;DR

I thought that it'd be interesting getting some of the forum users' opinions on how the west is shaping up this season, while also tracking free agent signings and trades that could directly or indirectly affect our team and its standings.

I think the WC champ still has to go through SA and OKC. Every year people keep thinking this is the year SA sinks and they just keep motoring at a high speed towards the finish.

GSW are going to tough and they just got better defensively. It's going to be an exciting season next year.

Pelicans seem interesting, too.

GSW and Houston are scary. It's silly to make predictions before they play an actual game, but on paper i'd say the top 5 is set in the west. SAS, OKC, LAC, GSW, HOU. The actual order is kinda unpredictable. If Bogut is healthy and the Iguodala experiment works, GSW could even claim the west. The same can be said about the Rockets. At the same time, I think it's possible to see them fighting for Homecourt Advantage by april. Both teams are passing through considerable changes and we have to see how they react.

Utah, Lakers and others are undoubtedly going down. There's no hope for them in this moment.

I'm curious to see how the development of the youngsters in the Pelicans, Blazers and Suns will affect their game. I'd say those teams can make the playoffs.

I think Wolves are now number 6.

Dallas and Sacramento are just jokes.

Eh not worried. Last year was a record for west coast brutality and with the Nuggets, Grizzlies, Lakers all appearing to drop off badly this year, not going to be as strong most likely. Rockets become more dangerous and maybe the Warriors but in the end the western conference stays the same or gets slightly weaker.

Wait why are the grizzlies drop offs? I can see them making the playoffs

Iguadola is an upgrade from Harrison Barnes, but not by that much... If Doc improves our perimeter defense, we're a better team than GSW.

I think the Grizzlies will still be good, but I get the feeling we may have seen their best. It doesn't help that they got rid of a pretty damn good coach. Losing Rudy Gay may ultimately hurt them, and I sure haven't heard about any positive off season moves. I think they will make the playoffs, but I get the feeling they will be a shell of themselves. Maybe that's wishful thinking. I sure don't want to see them in the first round again.

Do you think Iggy was worth giving up Jack, Landry, RJ, Rush, Biedrins and draft picks?

Idk what they were thinking. They're good from 1-3. They need help on 4-5

RJ, Rush (who was out most of the year anyway) and Biedrins are all loses they won't miss much. They could resign at least 1 of those 2 or both with their cleared cap space.

The draft picks may hurt, but yes the trade for Iggy was worth it IMO.

It's going to be very interesting in the West.I think so far how the rosters look, the top 4 teams will be Clippers,Spurs,Rockets, and the Warriors in no order.Top team is really a toss up.Also the Nuggets,Grizzlies,Lakers, and Thunder look like they're going to decline.

Nuggets lose Karl,Iggy, and now have a new coach with no experience.I still think they make the playoffs but they don't look like a top 6 team right now.Grizzlies are still gonna be good on defense but they don't have enough offense. They got a way with it this year but the Spurs exploited them badly.

Lakers are gonna flat out suck,no Kobe for a while and no money to get any big name free agents. The Thunder just lost Kevin Martin and don't have enough shooters, and have no post game.Any thing can happen before the season starts but how it looks so far,the West is going to be unpredictable.

Pelicans look interseting, don't think they make playoffs but might be able to.Mavs could still make some big moves.Got some cap space and a owner who is known to spend money.Jazz got a young team who could click and be good.Suns could still make some moves with guys like Gortat and Dragic. Can't wait for this season to start.

Landry and Jack were in the running for 6MOTY. Not to mention Jack was one of their best closers, Iggy is the exact opposite of that. Extreme liability at the FT line.

Below average at the FT line, but does a lot of other things very well. Good addition to the Warrriors.

I agree. They nuked their depth to get better at a single position in their starting five.

Don't think GSW is quite done just yet and they have the money and cap space to fix what they need.

Tim Bontemps @TimBontemps about 13 minutes ago

Odds: Heat 2/1; Thunder: 6/1; Rockets 10/1; Clippers 10/1; Spurs 11/1; Nets 14/1; Pacers 15/1; Warriors 16/1; Grizzlies 25/1; Knicks 25/1

I hate you Utah Jazz. I hate you for taking these awful contracts for picks above number 20 and not making the GSW pay for their stupidity.

The race for the Division banner against GS is gonna be a nail biter. And a playoff series....It would be epic.

Still have Rockets or Thunder (I like Lamb, and they HAVE to upgrade at C, if they dont kill sam presti asap) as a top seed

I think that the top seven teams in the west are going to be the Clippers, Spurs, OKC, Grizzlies, Rockets, Timberwolves, and GSW, not in that exact order and honestly don't know what kind of order it will end up being in but I do see the Clippers finishing in the top three. I'm not willing to predict an eight seed, that race is going to be way too close to call.

The Spurs and OKC will be the top dogs.

The Rockets and GSWs will be wildcards.

The Grizzlies will be a midseed. Then there will be a bunch of fairly good teams. I think we will be a top 3 seed this season but it won't be easy.

Yeah, I think losing Jarret Jack will hurt the dubs... he was getting to the rack at will all season long. They'll miss Landry's strength inside too... Lee is a bit of a cupcake.

Overall, I think they should be AS good this year, but I doubt they'll be better. Very perimeter-based roster... even Iggy shoots more 3's than he should.

They'll have a puncher's chance in every game because they're quick and can score, but I don't see them taking the division, let alone the conference.

Houston scares me more on paper, but with our upgraded defense we should be able to exploit the inevitable propensity for turnovers that they'll have.

I just want to see us get some more depth up front, then I'll be really excited to see this team in action.

I think we go as far as Blake takes us.. Which I think is maybe to the 4th seed ;(

Why is OKC still a clear cut favorite for the 1-2 seed? Did they not just lose Kevin Martin? They only have 2 scoring threats now, if you double Durant the whole game then Westbrook has to win the game single handedly which is possible for a couple of games but not a whole season.

They officially have no bench, that means those moments early in the 4th quarter where OKC is only down a couple of points and KD needs rest and they can't rely on anyone to maintain the scoring and the the lead expands so when KD comes back in he can't just close the game.

My predictions:

  1. Spurs

  2. Clippers

  3. Rockets

  4. Thunder

  5. Grizzlies

  6. Warriors

  7. Nuggets

  8. TWolves

I don't think it's wise to make predictions when none of those teams are quite finished just yet with filling out their rosters. IMO it's better to wait till training camps are are going to get a better picture of the strengths and weakness of each team.

My prediction

1 clippers (not being bias by the way)

2 spurs

3 rockets

4 okc

5 golden state (bold prediction -curry will be in the running for MVP)

6 grizz

7 nuggets

8 Dallas(if they sign bynum if not Portland will take that spot)

At this point I'm most worried about rockets (yes they will be better than last year) and golden state. Thunder Nd spurs can never be ignored. We seem to be flying under the radar again

We (Clippers) are about what we are last year, maybe a bit better. I still think we need to upgrade at the C position. I would love to see DJ turn into a defensive stud but it seems highly unlikely. I would trade him for anything with ture upside right now IE a player on a rookie contract or Draft picks and save the cap space for next offseason. I really don't think we can win with DJ so why keep him?

Let's see, we made a huge upgrade at the head coaching position, replaced 2 below average starting players at their respective spots with 2 above average younger guys and we are about what we were last year or maybe a BIT better?!!.....ah, don't think so, we're 5+ games better on paper already without filling out the rest of the roster or starting trading camp, LOL.

Cause he's young and athletic and nobody else wants to trade for his contract. Doc's probably thinking, we can't deal him........so let's work with him. I bet DJ plays better this year.

The season's a long way away, but I can't envision the Nuggets putting it all together this year. There's no way in hell they're the $4 seed either.

If I had to predict the west today it would look like:

  1. Thunder- most continuity

  2. Spurs- could be either or

  3. Clippers- we'd be higher but it will take us a bit to really get doc's defense

  4. Rockets- Dwight gives them more of a defensive presence hopefully they don't put it all together.

  5. Memphis- Again new coach is former assistant coach, might just need to add an offensive player.

  6. Goldenstate- I think the loss of Landry and Jack will hurt more than the addition of Iggy will help them.

Now it gets interesting because we don't know what will happen, and it could change depending on who gets Bynum and if he stays healthy.

  1. Portland- If they add Dalembert they could be a really scary team down the stretch plus additions like wright will help the lack of depth they suffered before.

  2. Minnesota, New Orleans or Dallas- I think the last spot can really depend on what happens with Bynum, Asik, or Pekovic (I haven't heard any news on him).

If DJ can be as good all season as he was in that first Spurs game, we'd be the favorites. I was watching the clips of that game and he was so dominant. What the heck happened? If he can be as active as he was in that game, we will be top 2 seed.

I think that will be much more consistent with doc. That's why pop was so high on him, he was running the defense. I really believe that the center should be the defensive captain. With doc giving them a system he has a chance to really step up and take a leadership position with the team. If not him than definitely blake, but blake usually is more focused on offense and I'm ok with that.
