WTF?

"Hey, nothing personal, Jack, but f--- off."

To Chris Paul, who basically told the Clippers that after they squashed the first incarnation of their Doc Rivers trade. Chris didn't like that. He let them know he was heading to Houston to team up with Dwight. And he wasn't kidding. For about 36 hours, Morey probably felt like all 11 guys in Ocean's Eleven. You know what happened next: The Clippers blinked, the Doc trade got revived and finished, and the Clippers were offering Chris 107 million reasons to play for him. Crisis averted. The lesson, as always: Chris Paul runs the Clippers.

(Cut to Vinny Del Negro nodding wistfully.)

This is Bill Simmons. Nothing to see. He's enraged at Doc and has been one of the biggest Clippers haters for 2 years now.

I'm saying WTF as well. If there is truth to this, CP3 should have came out right away saying he wanted Doc here, rather than a potential rumor like this to pop up and tarnish his image I think worse, than if he said something right away. Everything these guys do is recorded, logged somewhere or written down on the spot. Years can go by and they do something stupid and tons of incriminating evidence can be brought out like it was sitting on the desk of ESPN the entire time.

I really can't imagine CP3 being a baby like this, and I hope it's not exactly as described. If it is, I lost a little respect for him.

Dwight's been to a final. Chris hasn't.

I don't buy this though. I mean maybe he said it, but I don't buy that he would seriously leave LA to join Howard when it came down to actually doing it.

I get Bill Simmons though. He's at a level of fan commitment that he forgets its still a business. Happens to all of us.

EDIT:

Lmao apparently KD tweeted after the Dodgers game that his life was finished now that he got booed at Dodger Stadium.

Agree with you here. There's no proof. Simmons is just mad and a hater just like how he has been in the past.

Added a poll- do you think Chris Paul would have left the Clippers to join the Houston Rockets if Doc Rivers wasn't hired? I highly doubt it. Just like I doubt that this threat was made by CP3.

I really don't think CP3 would have honestly left. Every player has friends or favorite coaches they'd like to play for but they have to suck it up. Kobe probably hates Dantoni but I doubt he's going to demand a trade, or to be bought out in any way. Same goes for Pau. There were multiple options out there of good, solid coaches that were upgrades over Vinny, even if they were long-time assistants that I think he would have been happy with.

While he may or may not have said this, I think there's a good, safe bet here he did put pressure on the team. Hell, I'd love to go to Houston with Dwight Howard and James Harden on the team, that'd be nuts.

Even if this is true, I see this as CP3 being a voice for the team, and also a man who knows what he wants, and how he wants to win. Doc being here will probably give us at least 2 wins next season simply by subbing in the right people, drawing up better plays and getting into it with the refs to get more calls for our team, and better calls for games.

I don't understand, half this forum was ready to Vinny to a stake and let him rot. We haven't had a legitimate coach for years. Bluff or not, CP3 got our front office to get us a championship caliber coach. Plus he did so without explicitly coming out and stating that he's not behind the former coach (with would have been terrible for his image). He should be considered a hero on this forum.

We were on the verge of blowing the trade for Doc over a draft pick....... I respect Chris even more for recognizing it was time to twist some arms in the front office. He has power and he uses it WHEN NECESSARY. Not getting Doc after all that drama would have been an all-time epic fail for the Clippers organization.

Yeah when I think about it I don't think I'd be satisfied with Paul either way (if he said Move Vinny or I'm Out publicly or privately) just because I don't like the idea of all the control being in the hands of the players, but I think we're in more trusty hands in Paul then we are in our FO so I'm okay with it. Happy how things turned out and even if he did say this, just like the supposed tension between Blake and Paul earlier in the season, I'm just going to completely ignore it and pretend it doesn't matter

EDIT: Not fair to bash a first round pick. Last one we traded ended up being a one mister Kyrie Irving...

Besides, the money we're paying Doc is the more difficult part. Clippers aren't exactly known to spend that much on staff.

CP3 might have left, he might have not.

Either way, it is what it is now. Simmons, as much as I love him, needs to let this go and move on.

I was at the game. They booed Kevin durant and it bled into cp3s big screen coverage. But it quickly turned to cheers for cp3. Westbrook and harden both got booed as well even though both are from la and wearing dodger blue

Good to know that CP3 got some cheers.

It would be funny if Jack Nicholson (he was at the game) got cheered just because he is a famous Laker fan, but the idiot Laker fans in attendance never knew he was there to support the Yankees.

There is a lot of reaction on this thread to something that could be total BS or could be true or could be a distortion of what happened. Why bother?

Conjecture might be fun but why would people start judging CP3 again when we have no idea of what actually happened. Don't give gutter press any credence by reacting!

Does this matter,no. He is here and it is done. Just another dumb arse talking head with nothing else to whine about during the off season and needs to vent his everlasting hate.

But my Dodger peeps again pissed me off last night raining down their boos on the best PG in the league. What a pile of Laker losers we have at the Ravine. Of course, they could have been booing Durant since both were shown together and when they were shown, Chris kept looking down like he was not interested at all. But I am too old to fight off 50000 losers.

"The Clippers blinked"...? Oh really, Mr. Simmons?

So let me get this straight... The FO that kept saying the deal isn't dead -- despite Danny Ainge and David Stern both saying it WAS dead -- and insisted on only parting with one draft pick... ended up getting their man for precisely one draft pick.

Their big risk was losing Chris Paul if they didn't get the best coach available. So they eliminated that risk by getting an even better coach who WASN'T available.

Donald has let big free agents walk before and has proven to be unafraid of the consequences. For whatever reason he has always liked CP3 and has done everything he can to make him happy, but if he thought Chris was muscling in on his business and twisting his arm, he wouldn't give a flying f*ck about being labelled "same old Sterling" by the likes of you.

So no, Mr. Simmons... for better or worse, Donald Sterling runs the Clippers.

Still... your tears taste remarkably sweet considering their bitter source.

Rumors mixed and Bill Simmons, what a drink, LOL.

In the end it's not what Paul "supposedly" said, but what he does/did that's important.

Bill even before CP3 re-sign he is already our manager you see how good our manager and point guard? he makes our team better and better. If he threat our FO of going to Rockets if they will not hire DOC, thank you CP3 now we don't have have the better team but we have the best team ever.

I have to admit as much as I don't like Simmons there may be some truth to these speculations. Pauls motivation has always been to win. The year he left new orleans was quite interesting because the hornets started the season pretty well. Then midway they made some real bad trades that hurt the team and Paul went from supportive and optimitic to "get me the hell out of here." I suspect that two years of a second round exit and first round exit did not convince Chris Paul that the front office was doing enough to build a contender, and if you look at how bold this years off season moves were there was really no doubt that the clippers were doing all they could to jettison dead weight and fix difficiencies. I think had the clippers not fired Vinny and made all the ensuing moves we would have seen Paul go to Houston to be paired with Harden and Dwight. Luckily for us the clippers didn't do what the Lakers did, which is to say they just stood and watched, the clippers took matters into their own hands and said we know Vinny wasn't the right coach, we know you need shooters, so they went out and fixed all of it. And I think that spoke volumes to Chris by the three words "I'm all in"

I think this should be a cautionary tale for the front office though. criteria for hiring a coach should never be cost it should be performance. In that regard we made an error in Vinny in the first place, but I can forgive this front office because it righted that wrong by hiring Doc. I just hope they learn from this and never try to take a frugal approach to coaching acquisitions.

Repped High Quality Post

If Smmons really wanted to create a good 30 for 30 documentary, he'd make it about his own struggle of trying to make it as a respectable writer in the sports world for 20+ years of trying. The journey will focus on all of the bridges he has burnt with successful sports people and the lack of respect he gets from his peers.

Matt Barnes recently said in an interview that he and CP3 wanted to be a package deal and that the Clippers were their first choice, which implies they were looking at other options as well. If Paul wanted to team up with Dwight, he would have had to take a paycut in addition to smaller raises and a shorter contract.

I don't think that Rivers was the be-all, end-all for him staying, but it was at the top of his list. If CP3 flexed his muscle, I'm not mad at him. He knows that his say carried a lot of weight at least until he re-signed. He may as well make the most of it since he was committing to the team for the long haul.

I'm tired of Bill Simmons. He's done some great things, but he ought to have a little more tact. He lets his fandom get in the way too much imo.

I think that this could be true, I'm upset that he'd pull a move like that but with all honesty I thought CP3 was gone as soon as we got knocked out of the first round and going to the rockets would make the most sense for him if he were to be able to be paired with D12 and Harden. I just don't get how Simmons is saying this now when all the speculation when both D12 and CP3 were free agents was that they'd link up with the Hawks not the Rockets. Also the Hawks were the only ones with enough cap space as is when those rumors were flying around. Sounds to me that this is either bs or Chris Paul dealt out a blank threat so he could get the coach he wanted.
