Orlando Magic may make move for Maggette
Tim Povtak | Sentinel Staff Writer
June 30, 2008
Los Angeles Clippers guard Corey Maggette told friends over the weekend that he was encouraging the Orlando Magic to make a competitive offer in free agency, allowing him to return to the team where he started his NBA career nine years ago.
Maggette, 28, averaged 22.1 points last season for the Clippers, where he has spent the last eight seasons as a shooting guard/small forward.
Maggette has until today to opt out of the final year of his contract for $7 million and become an unrestricted free agent Tuesday. Under salary-cap rules, the Magic have only the middle-class exception of $5.8 million to offer him in the first year of a deal. The Magic could build a five-year deal worth close to $40 million.
"I think he'd come back in a heartbeat," said a Maggette friend who is close to both the player and the Magic organization. "It's something he'd love to see happen."
Maggette played here as a rookie (1999-00). His parents live in Central Florida. He has often spoken about the possibility of returning to the Magic.
Teams can begin negotiating with free agents Tuesday and signing them July 9. If Maggette opts out of his contract, the Clippers are expected to offer him a new four-year deal worth close to $40 million.
Magic General Manager Otis Smith declined to discuss any particular free agent.
If the Magic landed Maggette, it would make them serious contenders in the East, teaming him with center Dwight Howard, forwards Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu, and guard Jameer Nelson.

| Funny he would be coming off the bench for them but would not make the same commitment for us. I hope he goes there with his bad attitude and non ability to play d. |

| I was looking at what the magic could trade to us in sign and trade. They can give JJ redick( i think he is going to be a good 3 point shooter.) Pat garrity carlos arroyo keyon dooling. they have some good optins. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/trademachine |

| Carlos Arroyo, JJ Redick and a 1st round pick for Corey might peak my interest. |

Trade with orlando might be our best option considering he will be willing to come off bench for orlando. So bring on the JJ experiment. We will need some more bench scoring. He could start seeing min. if he were on the clips. |

| I think he's just trying to get offers going for him which will help up the Clippers offer. I hope the Clippers wouldn't be interested in a bunch of scrub players for him if it does come down to a sign-and-trade. I can't imagine that Maggette would go and sign for 5 years of $40 million.... |

^^Not really- scrubs just add more $ to your salary cap without improving your team. That is what we cannot afford to do....
Arroyo would probably be a little better than Knight but it would be silly to trade Maggette for him + other scrubs. |

| Since Maggette is a top 20 scorer in the NBA, we would need to get one of their core players in order to do a sign and trade. Hedo Turkoglu for Maggette sounds good to me. But why would we trade Maggette for marginal players when we can just let him walk and clear 10 Mil from our cap space that we could use to sign the players of our dreams? |

Most of the players signed would prob be 1 year deals. We lose that 10 mil resigning E.B and current clips. That way next year we would be able to get a free agent if things dont work. Maybe 2 year then trow that money at one of the 2010 draftees. |

We are NOT 8 million over cap. With Maggette opting out today, we are 10 million under the cap. Maggette was due to make 7 million this upcoming season. That would have still put us under the cap by 3 million had he stayed. |

| I have read to different sources today that say the Maggette clears 10 Mil in cap space. I am not sure how they figure that, but the last time I read the rules on cap space........my brains went into outer space. It is the most complicated mess of rules and regs I have ever seen. Eric Pincus from Hoopsworld sent them to me because he couldn't explain things either. But we were not over the cap last season and with over half of our team currently not signed, I can't see how we could be over right now. With Brand and Maggette opting out we only have 4 or 5 guys currently under contract. Everybody else is a free agent. |

| Yeah the cap rules are weird. But there are some clauses that specify that resigning your own guys does not count towards the cap in the same way. So it's not linear. |

| I really think that we should trade magette for a high future 1st round pick, then we wont lose any cap space, and next year after we are way over the cap limit form signing a good player, we still will be able to draft a good rookie and sign him. |
