Good read! I find it interesting that Doc Rivers hasn't singled out free throw shooting for DJ as something to improve on. But by not talking so much about free throws it might even help DJ's %.

Does anyone have a subscription for the OC Register? Dan Woike posted a link on twitter to his article but you have to pay to read more. The beginning sounds interesting: "Clippers' Jordan first to grab Rivers' attention By DAN WOIKE / THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

LA JOLLA Doc Rivers had choices. Following his first practice as the Clippers' head coach, Rivers could've talked about Chris Paul's effortless control on the court. He could've singled out Blake Griffin's athleticism. Rivers could've focused on Jared Dudley, J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford's dead-eye shooting. He didn't. Instead, Rivers sent unprovoked praise DeAndre Jordan's direction. "I thought everyone stood out," Rivers said, "but DJ was fantastic." As the Clippers opened training camp on UC San Diego's campus Tuesday, Rivers put his team through three ..."

I would also be very appreciative if someone could post the OC Register link.

I hope DJ really did look good and this isn't just a way of Doc making DJ feel important.

Get side tracked when he" didn't get the ball once or twice" Interesting.

I read - you are not a scoring option. You will defend and rebound only. No excuses, Grow up, buckle down do that one thing and do it well. Defending begins with desire to defend. Looks like Doc's trying to instill that

There was an up and under where torched (well maybe warmed ) Duncan but it was beautiful. The TNT announcer gave him serious props.

It's mental. To repeat myself to the point of boredom if he consistently plays like that I can live with 50 % FT maybe 45% if he boxes out.

The top 10 plays that comes up looks more like top 10 Chris Paul assists. They should get blocked shots, offensive putbacks, steals and finish, etc to be his top 10 plays, and things like the dunk on Brandon Knight can count, but just tons of spoon fed dunks by Paul is funny.

If I'm an opposing team, I'd try to get the clippers in the bonus ASAP and just foul DJ every time. It's frightening that his free throws might stand between us and success. He should shoot underhand, it can't give a worse average than he has now.

I love DJs new attitude, but with responsibility comes greater expectations. He needs to care about his free throws more than any kind of offense

Give him a little bit of love. He has made some beautiful post moves each in of the first five minutes then back to BS His footwork isn't bad but he keeps the ball low and gets stripped A LOT.

'Doc didn't want DeAndre Jordan trade'

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/stor ... in-garnett

"[Jordan] is just too young and too gifted to let walk out your door, bottom line. He's a game changer defensively. He can single-handedly change a game with his defense. There's five guys, and that number maybe too high, that can do that single-handedly with their size and athleticism and he's one of them. When you have one of those guys, you want to keep them." -Rivers

Talk about high praise. I hope all this is true and Rivers isn't just blowing smoke to get DJ's morale up since Rivers knows how fragile and sensitive DJ is.

To be redundant, like Bruce Lee's teacher Yip Man Doc seems to know how to get the best out of each player. With DJ it's building his confidence and showing that he trusts DJ (or at least giving the appearance) DJ needs warm fuzzy feelings and a security blanket and a bottle.

Hell it works for me too especially when the bottle is full of Hennessey (sp)

my lord this much hyperbole makes me think DJ's incredibly weak mentally, this it's only through CONSTANT adulation that he can get better. Who's going to be kissing his butt when Memphis starts punking him?

I think Doc is taking a completely different approach. He might be trying to feed DJ a bunch of praise so that he gives two more turds about his play; inflate his bball ego so that when he leaves the court, he thinks about basketball instead of call of duty.

Or just maybe he's really bought in to being a defensive player first, and it is showing on the court. Doc might really be impressed with what he sees from DJ, and he feels that DJ would do better with knowing that. Doc might sincerely be impressed with DJ, seeing that he seemed ok with trading KG for DJ before the playoffs he might see something.

It almost seems that there are some of us on here that want DJ to do terrible to prove themselves right. If DJ turns out to be another wasted year, I'll be back on here saying I was mistaken, but will want the team to do good either way. If he does good, will the same thing happen. I didn't like the Jamal pick up last year, but he changed my opinion, and I didn't want him to shoot us out of games to prove myself right.

I wanted Vinny gone, but still rooted for the Clippers in the Playoffs knowing that he might be retained. I was worried about the outcome of a victory against them and a short handed Thunder as a false confidence builder, but never wanted them to lose. I do think it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, but never wanted anything less then the best for the Clips. This is a different story to, because we would of probably given Vinny a long contract too, where if DJ doesn't work out we could probably trade him.

It's not that he's weak mentally. People are different and require different ways of motivation. When you tell some people directly that they are substandard and need to improve to their face they get determined and work hard to prove you wrong. Some people wilt. Some need a helping had others need a kick where the sun don't shine and it's a coach's job to figure out which is which. One isn't better than the other, just different.

For some people only success will breed more success and failure breeds more failure. Some women like roses, some like tequila. You better figure out which is which real fast.

So what do you guys reckon is DJ for real? Is this pre season form going to translate to the real season and even more importantly the PO's? Has he turned that corner?

The implications of this are huge for the team.

I think he will definitely be better on defense but I am not sure if his Fts will translate into the POs. He seems to shoot noticeably worse in the playoffs.

once DJ gets 2 or 3 blocked shots, his ego is boosted and tries to swat every shot in his vicinity. that might look great in the box score but that in no way is good defense. stats are deceiving.

would also like to see him hustle down the court after a defensive play than waddle around while gloating.

The great thing about his blocks last night wasn't just the number of them, but how he kept the ball in play. Usually he likes to swat them into the stands.

I've probably been his worst critic but I bet what happened is Doc gave him confidence. The guy has a swagger. All of his blocks weren't just jumping in from the weak side. He was contesting shots at the rim. He blocked 2 of Cantor's lay ups. He goosed Cantor's cook.

I think his play will remain at this level. Success breeds success. He knows what he can do. I think he will have a short jumper - mark my words. Remember he's I think 3/4 from the field.

he's been playing awesome defense and its great to see. but i think we can all agree that we'd like to have him make his decisions to make the team better and not just make an effort to be the league's block leader.

don't get me wrong, its not meant to be a diss. just would like to see him pick and choose when a "swat" is worth leaving your feet (and ignoring any potential rotation necessary that may leave a man open).

and yeah while he is running the court very well, there are cases where he gets caught up puffing his chest after a block instead of joining the offense. there won't be highlight videos of that on youtube, but it happened in portland and utah.

i'm excited, though. i hope he can maintain this.

I think I can speak for a good majority of CTB members when I say that we are all excited on DJ's growth this preseason. Still, I think there is definitely some merit to what you are saying, which if I'm not mistaken, it's not that you don't think DJ isn't doing well, but that you don't want him to get too carried away with a highlight reel play and ignore the fundamentals. Am I correct?

Man Ekker that's nitpicking. His blocks have been entirely within the game plan. He's not padding blocks if that's what you're suggesting. His positional defense has been incredible and none of the blocks are risky like usual, but rather smart and under control.

I wonder if there will be something to criticize if the Clipps win it all, but then again we have so called experts here that has never stepped foot on a pro bball court. Can DJ get some props even in a preseason for crying out loud... I guess the there's just no way this is gonna earn his money to some people.

I love what DJ is doing so far but he has to do it consistently before I am convinced and not in the preseason but in the regular season and post season. If he even plays at 70% of the level we have seen him play so far he would be worth his contract.

The name is usually spelled Cantor. It's a name taken from the Jewish guy who sings or really anybody who sings. Kanter is an odd spelling. They are pronounced almost the same. From the latin cantare. Variations are found in almost all European languages including Celtic and Germanic.

It can also be spelled Kantor, Canter or a bunch of other ways. It is related to the our word "chant". "Chant" probably derives from Norman French. The French for to sing is "chanter" or song "chanson". Here is the difference between Norman and Continental French. The word chair is "Chaise" pronounced like "shayze" in continental French. Norman French gives us "Chair" whereas Continental French gives us "Chaise (Shayze) lounge (lonj)" meaning long chair. Not pronounced "Chase lownj"

While Turkish, and Muslim, Kanter is most commonly and probably a Jewish name which makes one wonder if he had a male ancestor who converted to Islam. There is a considerable Jewish population in Turkey. As a matter of fact Turkey was a refuge for Jews fleeing the Christians. Sulieman the Magnificent used them as merchants and ambassadors to Christian Europe

If you remember Dean Martin--- "Volare oh oh. Cantere oh oh oh oh.

I misspelled it

Oh yeah, @pageC4 that was hilarious. Great references let's hope we get it done without any cheating a la Patriots. Maybe Ron will have some Clippers gear from the San Diego days in his next movie.

I always joke that Stern made it a mission to get us a championship before he retires with all the Lakers fans at my work. He helped us get Paul, and didn't let us trade a first and DJ for Garnett. If DJ keeps this up, it will look like quite a blessing that he blocked that trade.

In the 43 mins DJ's played so far he has:

30 pts, 15 reb's and 10 blks (yikes!!) which would equate to PER 36 numbers of 25.11 PPG, 12.56 REB's and 8.37 BLK's (never going to keep that up)...HOF numbers, LOL. I know and understand it's only the preseason so my expectations are tempered for him to keep up that kind of production.

Give me just a 10% improvement over last years PER 36 numbers with the defensive he's showing so far and I'm a very happy guy; 14 PPG, 12 RB's, 2.2 BLK's (think it will be more in the 3+BLKs range when all is said and done)

lol yeah its fun to say Stern is out to help us, but we do have to give our FO credit. The FO gave up a lot of players to get Paul (Kaman, Gordon, Al Farouq, and #10 pick from Minny). And they even revisited talks numerous times to get this deal done. Lakers FO bowed out when they realized that they weren't going to get another Pau Gasol style robbery. Also, with the Boston talks even when Stern said no (protecting the Clipps in my opinion) the Clipps could have chosen to make the only trade DJ for Garnet or a draft pick for Garnet (so essentially we still had the opportunity to F this one up). But they wisely chose to only go after the coach and get players elsewhere. Fact of the matter is this: for the past couple of years Sterling has tried to field competitive teams. Only after Blake Griffin was drafted did the moves go the right way. I agree that using Stern as a way to irritate the Lakers fans is fun, but much credit goes to the FO. I didn't tell that to Andy Roeser in the parking structure when I saw him, but I will write him and Sterling a letter of appreciation soon.

if you're referring to my post, I'm confused.

heck, i even tried my best to phrase it in a way that made it clear i wasn't trying to diss DJ or anything, just saying there's a few things id like him to work on. sure enough, in true CTB fashion, i was immediately called out for being negative and too critical by the CTB "omg lob city 4-eva" police. people seem to only want to post nothing but praise here and hate on those that don't think everything is and will always be perfect. this board was a lot more open-minded and free-flowing back in the day.

smh.

i hear where you're coming from but disagree. he was doing an absolutely phenomenal job to start the 1st quarter, then started chasing shot blocks, leaving his man wide open under the basket for an easy layup. id like to see him pick his battles and be smart about it. but for the most part, i do like what I'm seeing.
