If the Lakers are that upset about it, they should build their own arena. I realize that they have a 25 year lease but they've already played 14 and when you get past all the red tape and actually build a new arena, you are down to around 6 years left on the lease and that's when you start talking buyouts and stuff.
Think about it. Despite what Clipper fans think of them, the Lakers are the most popular brand in the NBA and NHL yet they pay rent in a building that only houses 19,000. When you look at their season ticket waiting list, they could easily fill up a 23,000 seat arena.
There's also the issue of naming rights. If Farmers is willing to pay $700 million towards the NFL then you have to think the Lakers could get at least half that. You pay for around 70% of the arena right there. Multiply an extra 4,000 tickets x 40-50 games a year x average ticket price and you have the building paid off right there. All the other events just add to your bottom line.
Not only that but the Clippers could finally be the sole NBA tenant at Staples. Win win for both teams.
