Asked if the bench will once again be a five-man swap, much like a hockey line change, or piecing in a few players with starters, Rivers said, most likely the latter.

"I rarely play all five guys together," Rivers said. "I do it in preseason because I'm trying to build that group. To be honest, if we have a lead it would be nice to come on and keep that lead, a big lead. My guess right now, at least with this team right now, there will probably always be a starter or two on the floor with the second unit. But we'll see."

Love this! Always a starter or two on the floor... which is what all other contenders do. Vinny's insistence on completely separate 5 man units with little flexibility drove me NUTS.

The reason I like it is because that's how will be in the playoffs. In the playoffs, it isn't likely that we will be seeing 5 bench players on the floor together

With our bench as it is with only one player in the unit that plays proper D I figured that is how it would work.

He basically means that outside of foul trouble Blake or DJ will be on the floor at all times

After last nights game I'm sure either Blake or DJ will be on the floor at all times and we will play a small ball lineup 7-10 minutes

Glad to hear our coach has cajones, I always felt Vinny played the YMCA junior basketball team rotations, as if everyone had to play at least a quarter. I can't wait to see what our rotation looks like at the halfway point of the season.

Hopefully there will be a new capable defensive big to give Blake and DJ a rest by that point.

Doc's decision is a sound one. The key difference between last years second unit and this years is (as someone else pointed out) that we swapped defense for offense. While Jamal Crawford was the sole focus of the bench offense, Bledsoe, Barnes, and Hollins/Turiaf were a little more focused on defense.

Now with Bledsoe gone the defense has definitely taken a step down on defense. Also, Mullens adds another dimension to the second unit. After just a few preseason games we see how much of a chucker he is. All of that equates to a bench with less defense than last year and inefficient shooting outside of Jamal. So Doc is right to keep at least one starter in that court due to the inefficiency of the second unit

The rotations will be closer to play off rotations I suppose. I hope this doesn't put to much physical strain on our starters.

I was wondering this as well. Its why acquiring Emeka Okafor would be ideal. If he is the second unit center then the defensive woes are solved and perhaps we wouldn't need to have a starter on the court at all times

A starter on court at all times is no problem but DJ or Blake on at all times might be. So I agree Okafor would be great if he gets fit.

If the so called "Big 3" are on the court 35+mins a game all should be fine.

I love this idea.

I had hoped VDN had done this.
