Free throw shooting is pretty bad, and he's recovering from an injury IIRC. If he ends up being healthy though, he could be a great backup for the Clippers. It would be a bit of a gamble to take him, but hey, if you want to win the championship, you might just have to go for it.

If that's in Doc's plan, we need to cut Lou now... or buyout Wayns...

"Wizards Acquire Gortat From Suns for Okafor, Pick"

Still wouldn't want him imo.

Suns will probably buy Okafor out, that's what we're saying.

A quality big man who comes cheap when he gets bought out. I'm in.

One thing I'm not understanding, what would be the incentive to buyout Okeafor if he's in the final year of his deal? How will that benefit Phx? Didn't they just buyout Beasley?

Hell yes we should. He's the final piece to a championship for us.

This would be FANTASTIC. Now I'm gunna spend the next few days tempering my expectations. He Is exactly what we need, a big who plays big, and off the bench he would give a real kick to our interior play. A dude knocking on the door of a double double avg last year in 26 mpg... fingers crossed on this.

His specialties are defense and rebounding and he's a legit 11/11 type player with a couple blocks.

Okafor is a good big man. Anyone who says no must be crazy. He is arguably better than DJ and he is better and more useful than all of our backup bigs combined.

Of course, Okafor has been a better player than DJ in previous seasons, and he can even hit a short 10-15 foot jump shot. So getting a guy that was better than the last two seasons of DJ I obviously a good thing.

if they want to save money, they could but him out for less than he's making and give him the incentive of getting to play for a good team this season. That's about all. Maybe if they want to tank more, they could also do it.

It won't be easy since we are very close to the hard cap and there will be other suitors wanting his services IMO.

For sure, maybe try to shed a guy like Mullens in a situation like this if that helps

Right now (without signing Amundson) we have about 2.5 mil (trade exception) and that's it.

Not sure who would want Mr Mullins. Sad Okafor would be a great pick up, but again it won't be easy.

I'd love this, adding in a guy like okafor would give us a great big rotation of okafor/Jamison. Think the backup big is a missing piece, as is a third string point guard (watching Willie try to run the point makes me nauseous).

The Temptations had a song about possible love interests. "First I Look at the Purse". Another song "Money's Too Tight to mention"

No doubt about it. He'd be great insurance in case DJ flops. Chris played with him in NO, so that should help the recruiting cause.

Getting Okakor is unlikely anytime soon. Also a bit of a long shot. I'd still like to dump Lou and think about Wilcox non guaranteed if poss. Right now they're as solid as Casper the Friendly Ghost. He's a lot better than Lou.

Found this on NBA.com

But the deal was, essentially, Gortat for the pick. The Suns have no use for Okafor, who has not yet played this season for Washington and is out indefinitely with a herniated disc in his neck. The 31-year-old Okafor, when he recovers, could be an attractive free agent for contending teams if and when the Suns reach a settlement with him on the final year of his deal, which pays him $14.5 million this season.

Okafor was one of the catalysts for Washington's terrific defense last season, which was top 10 most of the year both in traditional and advanced statistics. With Okafor and Nene up front, and John Wall, Bradley Beal and small forward Martell Webster, Washington had one of the best defensive starting fives in the league. Okafor was 11th in the league last season in defensive rating, according to Basketball Reference.

Sounds good, but what about his neck?

It will heal in time. Really it would be more about having him to end the season and during the playoffs

Still, no one really knows what Phoenix is up to. Maybe they want to trade him still, though of course they probably don't want $14.5M in contracts back.

The Wizards were 5th in Drtg last season and Okafor was part of the good defense. A 3 big rotation of Blake/DJ/Oak with Jamison in there when spacing is needed would be nice. (and maybe Mullens in the Jamison role if more consistent shooting comes from him)

damn if we get okafor....I honestly see him as the last piece in the puzzle! We need another banger of the bench especially if blake and dj come up small!

How long will Okafor be out? As much as he would be valuable in the playoffs, if we don't get another big that can play now, we may end up on the road to start the playoffs.

Do we get his bird roghts if we do sign him? If so, I would package DJ and Crawford for a young perimeter scorer and backup big.

If we don't get bird rights, just keep DJ and figure it out in the off-season.

I think that might be a little much there Heediot, there's a huge age gap between Okafor and DJ, and DJ's production is on the rise.

Is this even possible though? Okafor is on the books for $14,445 million we wouldn't be able to take that on without shedding major salary.

Not a trade page, this would be signing him after he is bought out, similar to an Al Harrington situation. It would most likely be on a minimum contract

as long as we're not paying him a grip of cash, yes. (i don't want to test the character limit as to how many times i can post "yes" in this text box.) we need capable bigs bad.

True, that is getting way too ahead of myself.

For fantasy's sake, Jordan's ceiling = Tyson Chandler. I would still take an aging Okafor (still has 3-4 good years) and a young wing with potential over Jordan\s potential only.

I have a feeling Brooklyn won't even need Reggie Evans as much this season as last. Seems a waste if they only play him minimal minutes. Just sayin'.

If he clears waivers which he should, he'll become a FA and not sure a minimum contract would do the trick. He's much more productive then Harrington.

Probably won't now that I think he won't return until maybe after the trade deadline.

He was a business major in college so I don't know.... That's why I was wondering about bird rights. Big men get over-paid, and he will still demand at least 8 mil a year for FA (after the season) .

There is no guarantee he'll be 100% after a neck injury. He could suffer nerve damage or his range of motion could be limited. He could lose muscle because of nerve damage. Too much of a gamble

^Of course, who knows how the injury will affect him, but it isn't a "gamble". Don't you have to be putting something on the line for a situation to be a gamble? What would be on the line? It's a low risk high reward move to add a 15th player on a minimum contract. Of course to make the contracts work, you might have to move Mullens or Green, but while I love Green, he isn't the difference maker in terms of how far the team could go.

Depends on how much they give him in the buyout. If they waive him for his contract, and don't negotiate any lower buyout, then he's still making $14.5M and the minimum contract would be extra.

I don't think he would be looking for more money, he would just be looking for the best fit team. Next summer he will obviously be looking for more money.

Don't think that's will be an option PHX will take. A buyout is imminent IMO.

Gamble

If his neck is OK. Has he had a cervical fusion, bone spurs disc problems? If a disc or bone spur is pressing on a nerve it could cause nerve damage. He most likely will be much more prone to another injury. The spine is like a chain. Any problem is one spot throws the whole spine and muscles out of alignment.

Also we have no reason to believe he'll sign here for peanuts. I see nothing no reason to think he will. If we want to wait till Feb and hope he's able that's a gamble. What if he's not ready till late March?

On the other hand except Diop there is little out there. With Okafor and a healthy Wayans we're the best team in the league but with Diop we ain't that bad. Him coming here is way less than 50-50

Agent0
CTB MVP X2

They want to buy him out right away? How much of a discount can they get in a buyout?

Toohip, the reason I'm saying it isn't a gamble is that nothing is being gambled, unless you're saying that if no Okafor then Diop would be signed, but then the gamble is Diop.

Diop has averaged like 20 games per season and 11 MPG the past 4 seasons. It's hard to say it's a gamble to not have him (per 36: 3.6 pts, 8.7 rebs, 37.7% FG, 25.9% FT, 6.8 PER). It's like Kendrick Perkins if he sucked even more, Diop is a negative on the court, he's worse than Mullens.

If there was another solid option though, then loosing out on that option in favor of Oak is a gamble.

I've always liked Okafor. Kind of the big man version of Shane Battier...not excellent, but always worth a spot on a team because of defense and niche role on offense.
