Clippers-Lakers Preview

By JORDAN GARRETSON

Posted Oct 28 2013 6:25PM

No longer a mere punchline or a lesser attraction, the Los Angeles Clippers have usurped the Los Angeles Lakers as the city's top team. But with the addition of Doc Rivers to coach up an already talent-laden roster, they aren't satisfied with merely being No. 1 in Los Angeles.

Coincidentally, though, their road to accomplishing more starts against the Kobe Bryant-less Lakers in a designated road game Tuesday night.

The Lakers (45-37) were the ones with championship expectations entering last season following the acquisitions of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash. Both were plagued by injuries, however, while Bryant suffered a torn Achilles tendon prior to a first-round sweep at the hands of San Antonio, and Howard bolted for Houston after his contract expired.

The Clippers (56-26) swept the season series for the first time since coming to Los Angeles, winning four meetings by an average of 13.2 points. Now being better than their historically superior arena mates appears to be the least of their concerns.

They've been successful in the regular season, as their 96 wins over the last two rank fifth in the NBA. But after a second-round exit in 2012, they were eliminated in the first round by Memphis despite jumping out to a 2-0 series lead.

"We have higher expectations for ourselves than anybody else," forward Blake Griffin said. "We don't feel we've arrived until we win a championship."

The Clippers fired Vinny Del Negro and dealt a future first-round pick to Boston to acquire Rivers' services. Since arriving, Rivers has put a priority on building a championship mentality, seen in his move to have the Lakers' banners and retired jerseys covered inside Staples Center for Clippers home games.

Point guard Chris Paul, who signed a five-year, $107 million extension in the offseason, found out in a hurry what playing for Rivers would be like.

"You always want someone to push you and motivate you," said Paul, who tied for the league lead in steals with 2.4 per game and finished second in assists at 9.7 but has only won two playoff series in his career. "In our first meeting, he told me I hadn't really done anything in this league, and he's right."

Paul should be happy with more weapons at his disposal, particularly with a deeper group of reserves. The Clippers added a bevy of 3-point options in J.J. Redick, Jared Dudley and Byron Mullens, and the signing of Darren Collison should also help Paul find more time to catch a breather.

The Lakers enter with a roster full of question marks after a championship-or-bust season went bust. No firm timetable has been set for Bryant's return, so the responsibility of leadership - and production - appears to fall squarely on the shoulders of Nash and Pau Gasol in the meantime.

"It's really important for us to embrace these low expectations, try to find a chemistry and build ourselves into a team that has some confidence," said Nash, who at 39 is the league's oldest player.

They'll be playing alongside a virtual scrap heap of free-agent acquisitions, including Nick Young, Wesley Johnson, Jordan Farmar and Shawne Williams. But where most generally see inexperience, Nash sees potential.

"We may not be as talented at the top like last year, but I think we got younger, more athletic with more shooters who can space the floor," Nash said.

Perhaps the youth can revitalize Nash, whose 6.7 assists per game were his fewest since 1999-00. Howard's departure also means Gasol will have the paint to himself, looking to improve on a career-low 13.7 points per game and 46.6 field-goal percentage.

Paul is averaging 22.1 points and 12.4 assists in his last seven games against the Lakers.

Repped High Quality Post

I tried to start a new topic on just how excited I am about this season but it would not post for some reason. I have been a Clips fan forever and on this forum for years.

I just want to say, do not get down on the team if we lose or play bad once in a while. Some of us remember the sub-20 win seasons. This is going to be a hell of a year, lets enjoy it!

I also cannot wait until Thursday. I live in San Francisco so all my friends and neighbors are Warriors fans. The dog and I will be in our Clippers gear for all the neighbors and trick or treaters, maybe i can convince the wife too...

Nick Young talking more junk. No mercy, run the score up! Matt Barnes will likely punch Young and we should win by 20 plus, leaving Barkley to find dozens of ways to bash and discredit us.

Tense we beat them by an average of 13.5 ppg last year WITH Kobe who torches us. Now no Kobe or Kaman, Gasol at center. We should wreck.

I don't think we'll play down to the Lakers because of all the talk about us vs them...but more importantly, it's our first official game. New coach. New players. New system. Just coming off a disappointing preseason game. Hopefully we are in a killing mood.

So looking forward to this game.... As others said, its been a rough and long couple of months, especially since my NFL team isn't doing so hot either lol...

It should be a great game either way because of the hype and what not but I am expecting us to make a statement and snuff out these Lakes...

I will especially be looking for Young as we are crushing them... lol

They've looked decent in the preseason, the lakers. Our bench needs to match their energy. We are better than they are, but I'm a bit nervous.

I am right there with you! The Lakers aren't great but they sure will be competitive! The Clippers had a lackluster preformance this preseason but again we didn't have all of our roster together and I understand that every single player is learning a completely new system and its taking Blake, and DJ a while to break those old habits they had under Vinny Del Negro! I excpect it to be close throughout the first 3 quarters but in the 4th we blow them out!!!!! Should Be A Great Game but lets just analyze the game! Who kept the Lakers in the game most of last year Dwight, Kobe, and maybe Metta! Pau can't guard Blake and he can't jump with DJ! Nash cannot guard CP heck even Kobe couldn't guard CP! Dwight isn't even there! And now we have Doc Rivers!!!! We should win no doubt but it will be a nice game

Gameplan:

Let Nick Young shoot

Unleash Collison on Nash and Blake

Play physical with Pau

We already know how to stop Kaman, just force him to do atleast one dribble. One dribble from Kaman = one turnover from Kaman.

Collison practices

After missing Friday night's exhibition game because of a bruised left kneecap, Clippers backup point guard Darren Collison did a few limited things in practice Sunday.

Despite saying he would play in the season opener Tuesday against the Lakers, Collison acknowledged he has one big problem.

"I can't really run," Collison said before practice.

For a speedy player such as Collison, who wore a black sleeve on his knee, that's not a good thing. Collison didn't do any contact work at practice, but did some running and shooting off to the side.

Collison said he was about 80% healed.

"I'm getting there," Collison said. "It's one step at a time."

The thing that frustrates me is that Ido t understand how the front office didn't realize how badly our bigs got owned and get at least one defensive big this offseason. It really worries me, and I don't think any games are going to be easy wins as a result. Pau and a healthy Kaman are not going to be easy to defend. Mullens is so athletic it's amazing he can't use it. He seems scared.

If collison isn't in top form, Farmar will have a big night.

A) Mullins isn't that athletic, lol

B) Pau and Mr. Net Zero, err Kaman won't be a problem for Blake and DJ

C) Collinson will be fine @ 90%...and Farmar meh.

lets say your employer calls you in for a meeting and tells you that they plan on having you around for another year and to not worry about anything. the next day you find out through a friend that you've essentially been fired and will now have to find a new place to live in a new city.

of course, this is all after your boss sits down in your office to watch you work and mouths off how you're pathetic as you type away.

the front office was HORRIBLE during kaman's tenure - newer fans won't ever know how bad things were in the past. they were BAD. the 00s, the 90s, the late 80s. they were BAD. everything kaman said about the franchise is 100% accurate.

on a side note, unfortunate that every time the clips and lakers play, chris has always been on the crap team. lol

I feel like its a little different because regular people have to worry about feeding their families and stability, those are scarier than playing in a new arena while still making millions

ekker I agree. There is such a thing as respect and common courtesy. Our FO is famous for acting like cads and bounders. Butler was never told in advance he was being traded. Gordon was told he wouldn't be traded. Butler found out in the press.

Everybody is due courtesy no matter how much they make. Chris was the subject of trade rumors for a long time and he was a bit upset about it. He felt his days as a Clipper were numbered. A guy can't play with loyalty when he knows the team wants to get rid of him

I just looked at stats, & Mullens shot 34% from 3 this preseason. I know he's clumsy and reb/d could be better, but I think we go overboard on the criticism. He was acquired to stretch the d, a 7 footer making 34% is pretty good for a backup big, I know we could use a banger too but I think Mully is a good piece.

34% is pretty awful for a "stretch" 4 and he is even worse in every other aspect offensively and a beyond horrendous defender. He would have to shoot at 40% to make up for his deficiencies in literally every aspect of the game.
