Rockets-Clippers Preview

By NOEY KUPCHAN

Posted Nov 03 2013 5:47PM

While the Los Angeles Clippers were at one point rumored to be a possible destination for Dwight Howard, he ultimately decided to join forces with James Harden and the Houston Rockets.

So far, so good.

Set to return to Staples Center for the first time since leaving the Lakers, Howard tries to lead the unbeaten Rockets to their best start in 17 seasons Monday night against the Clippers.

It hasn't taken long for Howard to make his presence felt with Houston (3-0), which has surrendered 93.7 points per game thus far, significantly better than last season's mark of 102.5.

Howard is averaging 15.0 points, 17.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks for the Rockets, who are limiting opponents to 38.7 percent shooting. The All-Star center averaged 19.3 points on 60.0 percent shooting and 3.0 blocks in four losses against the Clippers last season while with the Lakers.

"He's definitely moving around a lot better than he was last year," Clippers center DeAndre Jordan told the team's official website. "I feel like he slimmed down a lot. I was watching a couple of their games and you can just tell that last year was still a little stiff and his back was giving him some problems. Hopefully, he'll be back to the 2010-2011 Dwight and that will be better for the league."

After beating Charlotte and Dallas, the Rockets kicked off a three-game road swing with Saturday's 104-93 win over Utah. Chandler Parsons had 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists while Harden scored 23 as Houston stormed back after trailing by as many as 19.

Jeremy Lin added 20 points and Howard totaled 15 to go along with nine boards.

"We put ourselves to the test. Being down 16 at halftime, we might have just caved in and gave up last year but this year we fought back. That's the difference," Harden said.

The Rockets haven't won their first four games since opening 6-0 in 1996-97. They had dropped five straight to the Clippers (2-1) before winning 98-81 on March 30.

Los Angeles has posted back-to-back wins since Tuesday's season-opening loss to the Lakers, beating Golden State 126-115 on Thursday and Sacramento 110-101 on Friday.

"The three games we've had all felt like playoff games with the crowds and just how the intensity is and the atmosphere," said Jordan, averaging 11.3 points and 12.0 boards. "It's been great. We can only build from this."

Chris Paul led the way with 26 points and 10 assists against the Kings, his third double-double in as many games. The superstar point guard is averaging 27.7 points and 12.0 assists.

"I came out a little slow and tried to let the game develop, but I can't be that way. I have to be more aggressive," he said. "I'm one of those people that let my teammates get me going, and I need that. (Coach) Doc (Rivers) talks to me about it but it's my teammates that help me."

Blake Griffin added 20 points, 17 rebounds and six assists and Jamal Crawford scored 18 off the bench.

While the Clippers are clicking offensively, they have surrendered 110.7 points per game, an area they know needs improvement going forward.

"The past couple of games we've played our defense and everybody in here knows what that means and I think it's working," Paul said. "We've still got a ways to go but we're building."

These teams meet again Saturday in Houston.

We need to punch them in the mouth early. They are by far the worst turnover team in the league so everybody needs to be ready for a lot of sprints for dunks. Tough matchup but we are heavily favored and have to protect home court. We play them in Houston again friday I think and we need 1-1 at least for tiebreaker reasons.

Blake should be angry about all of the Dwight trade rumors for him, and I'm looking for him to get a trip-dub tonight.

I don't think Harden's going to have a monster game because Redick will be chasing his tail all night long, Chandler Parsons on the other hand is a whole 'nother story.

This is gonna be a fun game ladies and gentleman.

Setting the tone early is crucial. This typically gets the rest of our guys going, which is why Chris Paul and Blake Griffin need to start off hot and attack. That was a huge key in Thursday's win over the Warriors. We started off hot and I think over the course of the game we did get inside the Warriors heads and kind of demoralized them, for lack of a better word.

We will have a tough time controlling the boards in this matchup I think. Still, this game is important for us in many respects. As you mentioned for tie breaker reasons we need to have an advantage. Also, even if we do get this win and start the season off 3-1 we do need all the cushion we can get. If injuries happen (and they will), I don't trust this bench to keep us competitive in the absence of our starters.

Lastly, this is a marquee matchup. We botched the opening game with a loss to a below average team, and all eyes were on us. We bounced back nicely with a win over a previous foe we had difficulty with, but the national eye will be on us again and we canno't give Charles Barkley or Skip Bayless any more ammunition. We need to win this, and I will be a Staples giving our guys all the home court advantage I can by yelling to the top of my lungs

Close out on the perimeter and play Howard and Asik straight up. That should limit their 3's

I expect cp3 to have a bunch of steals against Lin. Harden will get his. Good test for us.

Man, I wish we could start a movement to give D12 a standing ovation during intros. Imagine how pissed Laker fans would be

Id try and switch Griffin on Howard down low, try and get D12 in foul trouble early with Blake's quickness.

We can put BG on Dwight on defense, but we can't force Dwight to guard BG when he's on offense.

I'm sure McHale will put Dwight on Blake though.

No thanks. Lakers fans are douche bags but so is Dwight.

True, but if the switch happens Griffin should face up or backdown and try and make him pay. No mid range jumpers unless unbelievably open.

We have the ultimate Dwight stopper in Hollins... a foul machine. The best place for Dwight is at the line. Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_08

I'll be ok with some jumpers for Blake... either pull one of those big bodies out of the paint and give us a chance to compete for some rebounds, or somebody's open for us on the perimeter.

In Blake's 2nd year... he got the best of Howard in OT when they finally got matched up, although we lost a close one. I remember he got like 3 straight stops on Howard.

Its funny how Dwight's offensive game seems to have gotten worse since 09. His post game is mediocre at best. Still he makes the Rockets a very dangerous team defensively and they were averagish on that end last season.

JJ on offense:"I hate to say this because we're averaging a lot of points but I think we're running [about] 50% capacity of where we can be"

Scary thought from JJ. I agree though... we haven't even gelled. This offense may be Phoenix Suns 2.0... now the key is getting the defense up to par.

that's funny. I would want to do it just to piss them off. It's a shame that Dwight had to waste his "talents" on the Lakers, but now at least the rest of the NBA knows how horrible of an experience it is playing for that franchise. Then the way they all vent against Howard for leaving who the hell in their right mind would go there now.

Some people just don't get it. It would remind me of when Mariano got a standing O at Fenway because he blew a couple of closing situations. Or when Knicks fans booes Sac pg Isaiah Thomas every time he touches the ball because of his name. Could be a classic moment

Hopefully this game won't be full of Flaker idiots just to have the right to boo Howard. C'mon Clipper nation. Don't let them in.

We came out playing great basketball against GS. If we do that tonight, we'll be okay.

Everyone on defense has to be alert. This is the type of game where Lin can go off if we don't pay attention to him.

Got to stay out of foul trouble too. I have a feeling McHale is going to use that as his game plan to get Blake and DJ off the floor.

Hopefully the Clippers can cure the painful memory of watching the Chargers blow it at the 1 inch line in 3 attempts.

Yea I get a strong feeling the refs will ruin Rockets/Clips and call a fu** ton of fouls, probably on both teams right out of the gate.

Let me guess. Tonight's game's headline is "D12" is back in LA. **** off, LA media. We don't care about Dwight's departure from the Flakers. This is a Clipper home game.

Fouls, like last year, have been a big problem for the Clips. Need to cut those down...although not playing Mullins and Hollins would help out with that, lol.

Doc pregame should come soon. BTW Hollins did well on Howard last year, problem is refs fu**ed him and he would get like 3 fouls a minute.

You are giving Hollins a lot of playing time. 24 second shot clock, say about 3 possession combined (for teams) per minute. He picks up a foul On every defensive possession...ummm 3 min of playing time thus graving an all time NBA record!

In all seriousness. I think we let Howard go one on one. Stay tight on Harden and close out on Parsons. Stay active on D and move the ball on offense. Griffin needs to be active defensively and be all up in the Rockets defense face on offense.

Anyone else feel embarrassed that Howard is being booed loudly? Think about it, there's no reason for Clips fans to hate him. Laker fans are invading our home game. This looks like a Lakers @ Clippers game without the Lakers in it.
