Timberwolves-Clippers Preview

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD

Posted Nov 11 2013 1:47AM

The Los Angeles Clippers salvaged the finale of their recent trip with a strong defensive effort, though it hasn't been necessary with the way they're scoring at home.

That may have to change when Kevin Love and the Timberwolves visit Staples Center seeking Minnesota's best start in 12 years.

The Clippers will try to put together a complete performance Monday night as they try to open 3-0 at home for the first time since 2006-07.

Following losses in Orlando and Miami, Los Angeles (4-3) managed to avoid a winless three-game road swing by rallying past Houston 107-94 on Saturday.

The Clippers outscored the Rockets 61-39 in the second half - including an 18-0 run during one stretch. Houston had scored 118 in a 19-point loss at Staples on Nov. 4, but Los Angeles held the Rockets well below their season average (105.6) this time.

"I kept telling them to hang in there," said coach Doc Rivers, whose club allowed 98.0 points per game on the trip after giving up 112.5 in its first four. "We hung around and got it going and our defense won the game."

The Clippers haven't had much trouble outscoring their first two opponents at home, putting up a combined 263 points and shooting 50.8 percent against Golden State and Houston. At the same time, though, Los Angeles allowed 233 points on 51.3-percent shooting. The Warriors and Rockets also combined to go 19 of 43 from 3-point range.

The Clippers hope to build on their latest defensive effort against Minnesota, which has averaged 87.8 points during a five-game skid in the series.

That's certainly less imposing than the 22-game losing streak the Wolves ended versus the Lakers with a 113-90 victory at Staples on Sunday. Minnesota put up 47 points in the first - the highest-scoring quarter in franchise history.

Ricky Rubio had his second career triple-double with 12 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds, while Love had another big game with 25 points, 13 rebounds and four 3-pointers.

"Everybody was making shots," said Rubio, the first opponent to record a triple-double against the Lakers since LeBron James on Christmas 2010. "We knew we'd lost the last 22 or something like that. It was a good game for us to end it."

Love is averaging 26.9 points, 14.4 rebounds and 4.7 assists this season. He had 39 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Timberwolves to their last win over the Clippers, 95-94 in Minnesota on March 5, 2012.

The Clippers also could have their hands full with Kevin Martin, who has made 18 of 28 from 3-point range while averaging 27.0 points over the last five games.

The surging Timberwolves (5-2) are now trying to win six of their first eight for the first time since a 9-1 start in 2001-02.

With Griffin playing well for Los Angeles, this game features two of the NBA's top power forwards. Griffin, averaging 24.0 points and 11.3 rebounds over his last three games, has scored 23.8 per game in 12 career meetings with the Timberwolves.

While Chris Paul seeks his eighth straight double-double to open the season, he's looking to get his shot back on track after totaling 25 points on 8-of-24 shooting in his last two contests.

The Clippers could be without Matt Barnes for a fourth straight game due to a right thigh contusion.

I hope the T-Wolves spent all their energy yesterday in beating the Lakers. All our Clips players need to bring their defensive mindset for all 48 minutes of this game. It'd be awesome if they can contain Love and Martin.

Love will definitely score his points. He'll probably find himself open a few times if Blake has to switch on D. My hope is we'll be firing on all cylinders to the point that Love vs Griffin won't matter.

That's what I am thinking. Thankfully on my fantasy team I have griffin, Jordan, reddick, and love. I might be racing up some serious stats:).

Hope we can play decent defense they love shooting the 3 pointer and torched the lakers beyond belief last night. 7/8 3 point shooting in the 1st quarter.

Only thing is Blake is a better/different player!!!!!!! Kevin is still the same player he has always been! Can you go out and put Kevin Love on LeBron James??? I do not think so!!!! Kevin Love would rather get rebounds than play defense!!!! Blake Griffin held LeBron in check in my opinion! Blake can defend now, and more explosive than Kevin!!! Should be a great game!!! Great decision game to see who is the best PF in the game haha! Anyway great PF matchup!!

Key Matchups

Blake Griffin vs. Kevin Love

Chris Paul vs Ricky Rubio

Jamal Crawford vs Kevin Martin

JJ vs Martin too. It will also be interesting to see if DJ can deal with the man-mountain that is The Pek.

Did anyone catch any of the LAL vs Minny game last night!!! Just like the night the b4 playing the Warriors I found myself "scouting" the opposition or So I think lol kinda funny how the Clipps get so far 2 games vs 2 teams who just played the night b4 vs the LAL, is it me or did it use 2 be the other way around b4 lol???

I'm nervous about Rubio though because as a defender I feel like he is underrated from what I saw last night he has pretty good quick hands & his overall speed is very deceptive, kind of a pesky defender that is more of a pest & can keep up with full court press. I feel like Coach Spolstra put out there 4 everyone 2 see that 1 if u blitz CP3 on all P&R is blows up the offense & Vs HOU someone like Beverly who was all over CP3 constantly reaching in, pickin him up full court, playing up close physical D on CP3 can frustrate Chris & ultimately take him out of his zone & focus?? What do U guys think??

He did well against Howard and Cousins, I'm sure he'll hold his own against one of the lesser super villains in the original Superman movie, lol.

It's hard to believe we've only had 2 games at home in 7 games. We need to play tonight like we are ecstatic to be home!

Rubio is sort of like Paul defensively. Excellent help defender but struggles a bit against athletic PGs. He is actually better when it comes to M2M defense since he has better physical tools(size) compared to Paul.

He is one of the best defensive PGs in the league but his strength isn't man to man defense its help defense. Beverly is a nice defender but he is foul prone and is only strong at man to man defense. Frankly there were a few times where Beverly fouled CP and didn't get called for the foul. He should have fouled out but I guess that is home cooking for you.

We must not let K Love catch it beyond the 3 point line. Blake must attack K Love in the paint. We must leak out on defense to stop the Brewer and Co. fast break. We must make Rubio shoot beyond his comfortability although he has gotten better. And last but not least we need our bench to show up.

According the Stu lantz yesterday, the Wolves are the worst at defending the paint in terms of stopping inside scoring. There is no excuse for BG and DJ to have good games tonight down low. At the very least, Doc should game plan at exposing them.

If Blake can score inside on DH and Asik, he can score inside on Love and Pekovic. I think we see some Blake lobs to DJ also...been a while since we've seen those.

Paul may get shutdown if he comes out passive. We need to dominate this team. Blake needs to try for 30/15 and send a message to Love, DJ needs to keep dominating.

Why do the Rockets still try to play drive & dish basketball? If you start two Centers why do they not play Inside-Out basketball! Do you know how many lobs Dwight would have if he was playing with Chris! I do not believe the wins against the Rockets are big wins because of how the Rockets are playing and how dysfunctional they look and are!!! A win against Minnesota would be great for the Clippers!!!!! The TWolves are playing great basketball!!!! Rockets are not in my honest opinion

I doubt Paul has another less-than-stellar game. I will be very surprised if he does.

We definitely need to take the T Wolves seriously, however they've benefited from some good luck with their schedule. Beating Orlando, an improved team...but at home in OT. Playing OKC at home without Westbrook. Playing the Knicks on the road but while the Knicks are absolutely terrible (I saw that game, and they were the worst I'd seen them play in a long time). Playing Dallas at home. In fact they've had 4 home games to 3 road games. They did lose to GS at home and Cleveland on the road. That's not to say they aren't the real deal. There's something to be said for taking advantage of the situation which they have done effectively. Can't sleep on them. However, I think they can be vulnerable to good teams and we should definitely be a better team than a majority of the ones they've faced so far.

On that same note, Houston was riding very high when they faced us going into Staples. They were one of the top teams on O and D, but we brought them back down to earth. We need to do the same to the T Wolves!

You're absolutely correctly. We need to come in mentally prepared for this team. Looking at the T-Wolves critically there are some wins that could be attributed to odd circumstances. Still, this game can help us recover some of that ground we lost in the standings during our Florida trip.

My hope is that this team plays more consistent, and keeps a solid pace. Last year I was a big critic of the meandering in the standings that the Clippers seem to have a propensity for. People dismissed these losing streaks, but they do affect seeding and strength of opponent. For us to be successful I do believe a consistent pace and rebounding from losses are critical.

With the NBA shedule being long and rigorous we need all the cushion we can get. A top 3 seed should be our goal, and we want to maintain that steadily throughout the year.

I BELIEVE IT!

I wish the coaches would run more of an offense for Blake!

When Chris was hurt (against the Twolves)

Blake put up

26 points (11-17)

13 rebounds

3 steals

I just want to see Blake be more involved! He can carry a team but so can Chris

Griffin had 27 points and 14 rebounds in a 102-97 loss in Miami on Thursday.

Griffin had 23 points and 13 rebounds in Wednesday's loss to the Magic.

Griffin had 20 points and 17 rebounds Friday against Sacramento.

HIS AVERAGES!!!

Pts

21.7

Reb

10.7

Ast

2.7

These are superstar numbers!!! I want Blake to dominate tonight!!

It should be a fun game to watch...one true superstar in Chris, 2 budding superstars in Blake and Love, One up and coming PG star in Rubio and the continuing progression of DJ.

This is probably due to our bench bigs though. I'm sure our starting power forward and center rank pretty high compared to the rest of the league

Barnes also scored a ton of points in the paint last year for us. When he gets back we should be better for sure.

BG and KL are friends so they usually have pretty good games against each other.

CP3 should outplay Rubio if only because CP3 is due a good game.

DJ should have more rebounds than Pecovic and make a better defensive impact.

I will be there. Really looking forward to this one. Can't wait to see Blake against Love, those two always have good battles against each other.

Get off to a good start and stay out of foul trouble. Watch out for Kevin Martin, he lit us up last year.

Clippers are favored by 6.5. We're shooting at a higher FG% and 3PT% then the Wolves. Play the defense we played in the last game and we should cover that spread.

Meh, I'm still a little nervous about this game. What with all the hype about Love, who IS putting up huge numbers. And all the TNT-style criticisms of Blake, despite the fact he's been terrific so far. All eyes will be on how these PF's perform and who will outplay who.

Love doing what he does best. Rebounding the ball like the NBA leader should, Knocking down 3 point shots, and playing non existing D.

On side note. Refs have to watch the walk on K marts 3 point shot. Took two steps before shooting the ball.
