L.A. Teams Continue to Monitor Lamar and Would Consider Him?

The Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers continue to monitor Lamar Odom's progress as closely as they can, and would consider signing the enigmatic free-agent forward should Odom prove that his personal and legal issues are behind him, according to sources with knowledge of both teams' thinking.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Clippers and Lakers -- who both registered interest in signing Odom this past summer until his private life became a near-daily subject for the tabloid media -- will have renewed interest in the 33-year-old if he indeed makes a comeback this season.

Odom recently began training again with an eye toward making a return to the floor during the second half of the season, sources have said.

Sources stressed, though, that neither the Clippers nor the Lakers have had recent contact with Odom beyond calls inquiring about his personal welfare.

Odom has a positive history with both the Clippers and Lakers that sources say keeps the door open for a return as long as he can convince those teams he can get back into basketball shape and is committed to resurrecting his NBA career after a worrying string of headlines that included allegations of drug use and an August arrest on a DUI charge.

Of course, because of the nature of Odom's recent issues, sources say both teams would proceed "carefully" in evaluating the former NBA Sixth Man Award winner, who made it clear during a difficult season with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011-12 that he feels most comfortable playing in L.A.

The Clippers currently have 14 players on their roster. They are considering several options for that 15th roster spot, sources say, which is among the reasons -- along with luxury-tax concerns -- that they kept the spot open coming out of training camp.

The Lakers, meanwhile, would seem to have the most need and flexibility to sign Odom despite currently carrying the league maximum of 15 players. Their roster is filled with players on one-year deals in a bid to maintain maximum flexibility for a major retooling in the summer of 2014. Elias Harris, Xavier Henry, Ryan Kelly and Shawne Williams were signed by the Lakers to either partially guaranteed or fully unguaranteed minimum contracts.

Odom would have to prove his personal and legal issues are behind him, but both LA teams would take a look if he's serious about a comeback

Look I understand he has issues but the fact is we need him right now! Michael Beasley deserved a second chance and he got one! Lamar needs one as well! I'm curious to see how Doc would use Lamar since Lamar would kill the Celtics in the Finals and Vinny never got all he could out of Lamar!!! HE WAS OUR BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER LAST SEASON! I want Lamar back and he is way better than Byron Mullens!!! We have the room and the movable pieces and things if we need to try to acquire Emeka Okafor from the Suns or any other center.

What are your thoughts?

Yes I would.

He is going to help out tremendously, especially on defense where we need him most. Even an out of shape Odom was a very good defensive presence for our bench last year. If he comes back out of shape, he is still a major upgrade for the front-court bench.

Can the Clippers cut Mullens? If so, I would think hard about that - he just doesn't fit what the Clippers are doing whatsoever.

It's a big risk with all his personal issues but if he got back to where he was last season bball wise it would sort out our bench very nicely. Just what we need.

He does not want to be a Clipper why bother? He wants to be a Laker he loves that franchise. If you don't want to be with us then no need for him to here.

If your right that he doesn't want to be a Clipper then I agree, but do we know that or is it just rumor?

Beasley didn't get a second chance. He got about 10. We could have gotten him but the FO emphatically said NO

As far as LO I don't get why he wants to be a Laker. They dumped on him and we gave and will give him support. Even after he left and was a horses butt we still considered him family and at least I was happy with his success. He wasn't the best liked guy there at LAL. There is a choice between a lottery team and a contending team. Unless there are locker room issues he's familiar with the guys. maybe his erratic behavior was known about by the team?

Anyway it's all rhetoric at this point. If he really told us in no uncertain terms to fuque off why are we pursuing him?

Correction a third chance not second. He would have to prove himself to be the real deal and show that he is serious and over his problems which is probably not going to happen. Worth a 15th man slot if he does these things.

I can kinda cut him some slack for last year. The TV show was a stupid move. People know what size your underwear are. Constant divorce rumors. Bad enough in private horrible in public. Being married to a Kardasian. I heard Armenian women are right up there with Jewish American Princesses but never had the possible pleasure.

A reason is "why" .It doesn't mean justification An excuse is something that says it's OK. He has reasons but not excuses.

Let's say the Lakers stink by the time he's ready, y'all still think he wants to be a laker instead of playing on a contender?

I still stand by my decision on a firm NO. Odom hasn't popped up anywhere on the radar for negative sh*t which is good, but you never know what's going on with that guy. He seems to be or was extremely depressed and wreck less. As much as I'd love to see him healthy and in shape our team needs some serious defensive help and soon. We are going to get plowed in the playoffs for a first round exit if we don't find some defense on our team somewhere.

Guys don't need to get 2 blocks or steals a night to play great defense. We are just focusing way too much on offense right now than we are anything else.

We're 6-3 after the #1 toughest schedule in the league so far. We're doing alright. Better, non crack affiliated options will present themselves later in the season.

If we're going to get back an ex-Clipper forward, I would prefer we trade for Elton Brand. I know some people on this board still have bitter feelings towards Brand for the way he left the Clippers (I felt the same way for a while) but the guy is undeniably a hard worker which is much more than I can say about Odom. You won't have to worry about him running off to go on a drug binge. Not to mention he's a solid defender and rebounder.

Is it me, or has our bench looked a little bit better the last couple of games? I mean, I think there was always at least one starter, but still.

Give Lamar a 10-day contract. If he works out to be better than Mullens, sign him. If not, then no wasted money.

@SpearsNBAYahoo: Free agent @RealLamarOdom was at the Clippers facility for nearly two hours today meeting with Doc Rivers & front office, sources tell Yahoo

@SpearsNBAYahoo: Odom's meeting was after LAC practice today and players were shocked to see him, sources said. Source said. He appeared to be in good shape.

@SpearsNBAYahoo: While Lamar Odom did not sign a deal with the Clippers today, sources said the players were under the impression he was signing soon.

@SpearsNBAYahoo: "Everyone was shocked, but it was a good surprise," one Clippers source told Yahoo Sports about Lamar Odom.

You may not like it but it is what we need right now and I am sure the Clippers will welcome him with welcome arms, I WILL!!!!! #BringBackLamar

We need more defense and Doc can get the best out of him! Who knew that we possibly could get Antawn and Lamar lol

They you can trade Byron after December 15th for a Center!!!

10 day contract. If he plays poorly we cut him fatass. Twisted Evil

Can't be worse than Mullens and even if he is out of shape he is way better defensively than any of our backup bigs. Razz

I love the move and have been one the top advocates for Lamar's Return!!! Doc can get the best out of Lamar! He won't need a huge role! He will ultimately have the top-most respect for Doc!!!

Starters

Paul

Redick

Dudley

Griffin

Jordan

Bench

Collison

Crawford

Barnes

Odom

Hollins

If needed Doc can run Lamar and Blake together and Antawn and Deandre together! Antawn will get his chance! He is 37! You do not want to risk it this early!

We could possibly later on and trade Mullens or any other player after the December 15th, or Drop Wayns ( which I do not think will happen ) to leave an open roster spot!

If this goes through the Clippers look like a legit TITLE CONTENDER! Not that Lamar makes a huge difference, OH WAIT HE DOES!!! He is such an upgrade over Mullens Offensively and Defensively! I hope this goes through because I honestly like Lamar so much! He is one of those guys when you see him on the floor everyone wants to see him do good!! Everyone here agrees Mullens is trash! I don't like to think that because he is young!

PG - Paul - Collison - Wayns

SG - Redick - Crawford - Green

SF - Dudley - Barnes - Bullock

PF - Griffin - Odom - Jamison

C - Jordan - Hollins - Mullens

But I doubt Lamar gets thrown right into the rotation but heck it happened to Lou Amundson! Playing without a name on his jersey!! Lamar could suit up tomorrow haha wishful thinking

This is an interesting turn of events for Lamar. If he's completely drug-free and has his head on straight, this might really work well for the Clippers. Doc has good judgment --- he'll be able to determine if Lamar is indeed NBA-ready and worthy of being part of this team.

I anticipate whomever Odom signs with will be for the veteran's minimum, so should be relatively low-risk. Unless there are other big-man candidates available, I also vote for Odom signing with the Clippers if he passes muster with Coach Rivers and the Clippers brass.

When you got Mullens and Hollins as your backup bigs it would be smart just to take a look at Odom. They are that bad. Even a washed up Odom would be better assuming he is drug free.

Hell yes! After about a month of seeing Mullens/Hollins I'll personally kiss Odom's feet if he returns. Sure he's a bit of a liability off the court but his teammates all want him back and he will rapidly improve the defense immediately on the bench. More Odom= less Mullens/Hollins.

The team needs Odom back! Part of the reason the team sucks at D this season is because we lost defensive players in E-bled and unfortunately our best defensive player last season, Odom. Get him back but make sure that he's drug free and mentally tough not to go in to a drug binge again.

It does sound like the Clippers are on the verge of re-signing him. If so- welcome back Lamar Odom! Apparently he must be doing well, and in pretty decent shape. Probably not NBA shape yet, however.

Looked in good shape is probably still good enough to be better in Mullens. Razz

Worth a shot whether he is in shape or not. Certainly won't make our bench defense worse.

I really hope LO sign with the Clips and be back in the form he was last year. We don't ask him to do much except defend and rebound. He's already have the smarts for that. MY God! Lamar Odom in Docs rivers defensive system will do wonders.

If LO did sign with Clips,

What does it mean for DJ?

Mullens?

Hollins?

Jamison? He's probably never step on the court at all!

I'm all for it so long as Doc and the rest of the team makes sure he doesn't get back on the drugs again. I'm hoping he's actually in semi-NBA shape, but not holding my breathe on that.

I don't understand why we signed Jamison. I love the guy, and he proved to still have something left in the tank when he played in preseason, but as a finness power forward he didn't really fit into our plans, so why did we get him?

Doc gave the impression that he knows what he's got in Jamison and is conscious of his age and the length of the season so is saving him for later. But if that is the case it seems weird not to play him at all, cos he could get rusty and it doesn't build chemistry and it must be hard for Jamison phycologically. Wouldn't it be better to play him one game rest him the next or something like that. Or maybe Doc isn't planning on using him at all?

From the LA Times:

Free-agent forward Lamar Odom was at the Clippers' practice facility on Friday afternoon, said NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

No deal was imminent between Odom and the Clippers, the executives said, but there is interest on both sides if Odom has gotten his personal life in order. Odom didn't work out for the team, the executives said.

Odom talked with Clippers Coach Doc Rivers and some of his former teammates after the team's practice, the executives said.

One executive said Odom "looked pretty good" and that he is "not heavy weight-wise" and is "talking like he really wants to play again."

Odom has told friends that wants to play for a team that can make a deep run in the playoffs and has a chance to win an NBA championship, according to the executives.

Odom, 34, has been working out, doing some boxing to get into shape and some cardiovascular exercises, the executives said. If Odom can continue to improve his conditioning and his basketball skill set, the executives said the 6-10 forward could be ready to play basketball "in a few weeks."

The 6-foot-10 Odom averaged a career-low 4.0 points last season in 82 games with the Clippers, but he did average 5.9 rebounds.

The Clippers have a 14-man roster, leaving them open to sign another player before reaching the maximum of 15.

Odom had a tough summer in which he stayed in the tabloids. There were allegations of drug use and he was arrested in August on a DUI charge.

If Odom does return, the NBA will look into his problems before signing off on a deal, the executives said.

Wow, so it looks like it could actually happen. Frankly I am surprised. But hey if he can get his sh*t together as a player he is exactly what we need.

We can scrap Mullens and only play Hollins when we absolutely have to. Who knows what is happening with Jamison.

I have wondered if getting playing again is just what Odom needs, obviously too much pressure may not be good but having nothing to do and nothing to motivate him can't help much (if he is properly in recovery). Well I hope it happens if it is for the best for him cos it will only work for the team if it works for him. Certainly an interesting twist in the plot line.

^^^ Exactly. Hire a full-time "life coach" for road trips. Lamar needs constant support and supervision if he's going to join this team so soon after his drug problems.

Is there truly no other player that can be had to defend and rebound for vet min? This move is disturbing we know his love affair with the Lakers why does the franchise do this. This is creating a distraction if he want to plays he should do some d league reps first.

Hope everyone is ready if this happens.

He played here last season without a problem and actually was getting back into shape the whole year! The rumor about him "LOVING THE LAKERS"? How do we know he said that? I LOVE THE MOVE AND I AM ALL FOR IT! To be honest we need it! I won't have that burning urge in my heart to destroy my screen when I see Byron Mullens face haha
