Grizzlies-Clippers Preview

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO Posted Nov 18 2013 12:25AM

The Los Angeles Clippers won their first division title last season, but further celebrations ended immediately at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies.

The high-scoring Clippers have a chance to exact a measure of revenge Monday night when they face the Grizzlies for the first time since being ousted in the opening round of the playoffs.

Los Angeles (7-3) set a franchise record with 56 wins and eased to a Pacific Division championship by nine games over second-place Golden State. The Clippers also appeared on their way to advancing in the playoffs after winning the first two games against Memphis, but went on to lose the next four.

A right ankle injury to Blake Griffin played a part in the postseason exit, while the Grizzlies reached the Western Conference finals.

The injury limited the All-Star forward to 13 total points over the last two games of the series, including nine in 13:56 off the bench in a 118-105 loss in Game 6.

Griffin continues to be a force for the Clippers, averaging a team-leading 22.9 points this season. His impact is felt beyond the scoreboard, as he's tied for fourth in the league with 10.4 rebounds per game over his first four seasons.

That's reason enough for Los Angeles to be concerned when he hurt his left ankle in Saturday's 110-103 win over Brooklyn. Griffin left the game in the third quarter, but returned 2 1/2 minutes later to finish with 30 points and 12 boards.

"I just came down normal and felt something in the back of my ankle," he said. "It scared me not knowing exactly what it was. It's better than it was but not normal. I can put full weight on it without unbearable pain."

While Griffin should be ready to face Memphis (5-5), star guard Chris Paul isn't prepared to be without him.

"I need him like none other," said Paul, who had 12 points, 13 assists - six to Griffin - and seven rebounds against the Nets.

Paul averaged 22.8 points and 6.3 assists against the Grizzlies in last season's playoffs, but he was ejected late in Game 6 for crashing into Marc Gasol on a missed free throw.

Griffin also found himself in trouble with officials, wrestling Zach Randolph to the court after a basket in Game 6 to earn the fourth double-foul of the series for the duo.

They'll likely find themselves contending under the basket again, as the Clippers attempt to improve to 6-0 at home for the first time since 2006-07.

Randolph, though, has totaled 50 points and 21 rebounds and shot 20 of 30 from the floor to help Memphis win the first two of this four-game road trip - its first back-to-back victories this season.

He scored 22 on 9-of-12 shooting in Sunday's 97-86 win at Sacramento.

"Zach is playing well right now," said guard Mike Conley, who had 19 points and nine assists against the Kings. "When he's got it going like that and is in a zone, we try to get him the ball."

That certainly was the case in the playoffs against the Clippers. Randolph averaged 24.8 points on 57.4 percent from the field over the final four games after totaling 26 points in the first two.

Randolph and Conley each had 23 points in Game 6.

This time, however, Griffin and Paul may have some help from J.J. Redick, who is averaging 18.2 points at home. He had 26 on 9 of 14 from the field - 5 of 7 from behind the arc - against the Nets.

I know there's a temptation of this game to be Blake vs Z Bo, but the Clippers have to continue to play their new motion offense, finding the open man. Blake needs to score when it's best to do so, which is what he's been doing so well thus far. The Grizz have been playing better, but we can't allow them to slow down our offense.

I felt like we tried too hard to be as rough and tumble as the Grizzlies to a fault in last year's playoffs...instead of imposing our style on them. And I didn't love how Vinny had our guys adjust by fronting players in order to deny rebounds. It's like we were changing our game in hopes to beat Memphis.

I already love what Doc is saying regarding facing Memphis:

JJ and Duds change the whole dynamic of the match-up. Last year they dared us to beat them from range in the playoffs. With the shooters and ball movement this year, I think we have the upper hand.

I still don't know why we let Zbo go. Although I much rather have blake.

This really is the test I have been wanting to see. Memphis has our 2 main defense weaknesses.

Skilled/scoring PF, and shooting Centers. Notice those are the only times blake and/or deandre get owned on defense.

Lakers - Pau Gasol (Shooting Center) - Loss Orlando - Nikola Vucevic (Shooting Center) - Loss Miami - Chris Bosh (Shooting Center) - Loss

Minnesota - Kevin Love (Scoring/Skilled PF)- Win by lucky bounce Nets - Blatche - Win but entire team decimated Oklahoma - Ibaka - Before he got ejected he was like 8/8 in the first half

I have watched ever game and this is seems to be one of our glaring defensive weaknesses.

Notice we owned houston twice (Howard/Asik) 2 unskilled power big men.

this is something to watch for.

I want to see if DJ can out muscle Gasol and Randolph. Those two knows all the dirty little tricks like holding jersey, hooking someone with their arms, and a lower back push.

We beat Golden State, they have Lee and Bogut. And we beat the Kings, they have Patterson and Cousins.

I'm sure if we do lose tonight it will be because Gasol and Randolph had good games, but that's just because those are their best players and they don't win games unless their big men do work. It will be a coincidence that we lose to a team with skilled big men.

Also you can't say we only would've won if K Love's tip in didn't go. It would've been overtime on our home court. Also Blake did an AMAZING job on Love, it was when he was out that Love starting lighting it up.

Love had 4 threes in he first quarter. Honestly he killed blake. He just started missing open shots.

Cousins killed us that night!

With the exception of the warriors (There are always exceptions). Your post actually re-enforced what I said.

I watch every game. Trust me I know what I am talking about. Ralph Lawler and Mike Smith have said the exact same thing.

We have trouble with skill/shooting PF's and Shooting Centers. Whenever DJ has to move from out of the basket our defense 1. has terrible rotation or 2. DJ is slow at getting out the post to defend the shot.

Go back and watch the games. You'll see.

LOL, Love didn't have 4 3's in the 1st quarter. He had 4 for the entire game and only scored 23 pts for the game when he was averaging 28ppg at that time.

You obviously see the game differently than I do.

Love started out on fire, which he tends to do apparently. There were a couple of times the screen lost Blake too, which gave Love enough time to shoot. Otherwise BG did a good job. And forcing Love to shoot 8-19 is not bad.

If Blake and DJ can do a great job on Howard and Asik, they should be able to hold their own against Z Bo and Gasol. As long as they play Clippers basketball.

The Griz don't look like grit and grind much due to a coaching change. They just look like a mediocre team with no identity. They are just average defensively right now. Lets just put them out of their misery. Hopefully we FINALLY have a game where we just lock the other team down defensively.

@ESPNStatsInfo: Chris Paul has at least 10 Pts & 10 Ast in each of his 10 games this season. Magic Johnson holds the NBA record with 11 straight. (Elias)

If Chris does it again tonight he will tie Magic Johnson! If he does it again he will pass Magic!!!! No Pressure CP! But if he passes Magic he should be an MVP frontrunner

That's not exactly right. I don't know about in a row double doubles but Oscar, Wilt and MJ had the most consecutive triple doubles 11, 11 and 12. I don't remember who had which. Wilt once had a double triple double

25pts,22 boards 21 assists. I could be wrong but I think he had 247 consecutive double doubles ,- ppg and boards

MJ had a 10 game triple double streak not 12 and they are referring to assist double doubles not points + rebounds which is significantly easier.

They are definitely referring to post merger. Its not fair to compare post-merger players to pre-merger players anyway. The pace guys like Wilt and Oscar played at was far faster and the game was totally different back then.

Most guys in that era were sub 40% scorers and the pace was a lot faster which led to lots of bricked shots or rebound opportunities.

Not diminishing Russell or Wilt when I say this btw just taking into account context.

If that were true we would have beaten the Griz in 5 or 6 considering CP3 wrecked Conley in their head to head matchup despite the fact that our defense was putrid which made it easy for Conley to score while CP3 was constantly hounded by Conley, Tony Allen, and Marc Gasol.

The biggest factors are going to be how our bigs fare against theirs and our defense.

Repped High Quality Post

Imagine how much Blake's confidence would grow if he has a monster night against a Memphis team that has given him fits right after winning Western Conference Player Of The Week.

This could be a recipe for an MVP run for Blake.

Good test mentally to see how we fair against Memphis. A win this early probably means nothing but the game itself gives Doc something to work on. A win also gives some cushion in case we split the two game road trip.

Think the readjustment of Billups back in the series had some impact as well. Team had a flow going with Green starting. Hopefully this season we don't get thrown off with a major injury.

Big Impact?! Yeah it had a big impact! We were down 4 in game 3 or 4 in Memphis with a couple of minutes left and Chauncey just dribbles the ball off his leg out of bounds! We could have hit a 3 or atleast scored and right now we are talking about the Clippers in the second round of the playoffs! That was one of the things that made me dislike Chauncey! Then he goes on First Take and talks crap about Blake!!! So yeah if Willie would have continued to start through the playoffs we would have been fine and the outcome would be different now

We could have won that series if Chauncey sat on the bench where he belonged.

I used to respect him as player when he was on the Pistons but man oh man does that guy think he is way better than he really is.

He was washed up and was acting like he was a star. He talked so much nonsense when he was the worst playoff performer on our team and that is saying something considering Barnes was our 2nd best player in the playoffs. Billups didn't even play a role in the playoffs before that either. Dude was dead weight all season long. He was a net negative even.

Agreed. Playing Chauncey in the 4th quarter instead of THE BEST 4TH QUARTER PLAYER ON THE PLANET (Jamal Crawford) was huge. But our troubles began when Chauncey started in the first place. It was plainly obvious that we were a better team with Willie starting.

Vinny did well with the team in ways but we are well red of him.

Vinny didn't have the guts to do it, and you know what it might have caused unnecessary issues, but the best role for Chauncey would have been as a backup PG.

The rotation should really have gone:

Paul (35) / Billups (13) Bledsoe (23) / Crawford (25)

I think that would have "put the best players on the floor". It's not that Chauncey wasn't good, it's that he just wasn't very good at SG. But that is past, it is what it is, and it wouldn't have guaranteed anything still with Blake injured. Still, especially with a team that had Tony Allen at SG, Bledsoe starting actually made even more sense, also since if you wanted to rest Paul on defense, you could put Bledsoe on Conley and take your chances with Paul on Allen who isn't the best offensive player out there.

The problem with Chauncey was that he couldn't guard anyone to save his life. Pretty much it was Conley, Allen, even Tayshaun was burning him up and the only way he could be play D was by fouling, which usually resulted in several And 1's. Don't even get me started with that turnover off his foot.

Who cares now. It's been said and done. We can get revenge by beating the Grizz tonight.

Sorta, not really. Jamal was, like, one of the top 2 or 3 in the NBA at 4th quarter scoring, but led the league in 4th quarter +/-...making the decision to play Chauncey over him all the more baffling.

He also couldn't score consistently like he used to. He did have 15pts in game 1 and 11pts in game 3, but in the other 4 games only scored 5, 0, 3, & 4. That's not the Mr. Big Shot we all used to know.

Would like a victory with no one getting hurt. It's card Blake's Achilles is not right. He said it felt like it needed to pop on Saturday. Very nervous. I hope they really tests it and looked at it to make sure it is sound.

Yeah, I mean I don't want to beat up on Chauncey too much...he was playing out of position. He was old. Recovering from injury. Before he got injured, he and Paul took care of the ball with limited TO's. He could get 16-18 points by just drawing fouls and hitting occasional three's. But when he came back he wasn't close to that.

Frankly, I was downright annoyed watching him sitting on the bench for so long...especially last season when Paul went down with injury. I kept thinking "this is EXACTLY when we need Chauncey" and he wasn't available.

Oh well, we have two great shooting guards now, so I'm happy.

Does anyone notice how bad the Nets are? I mean they should have a better record than 3-7! Probably the biggest disappointment this season! This years Lakers?
