Notable quotes

Quote:
That's the crazy thing about the Clippers -- not only are the starters not terrible, they're actually very good. The starting lineup of Chris Paul, Redick, Dudley, Griffin and Jordan has played almost 40 percent of the team's total minutes this season. As a unit, it surrenders only 99.3 points per possession, which would rank sixth in the NBA.

Take one Clippers starter off the floor and the Clippers still give up considerably less than the league average. For instance, the Clippers' top four performers -- Paul, Redick, Griffin and Jordan -- maintain that 99.3 defensive rating, and they've been on the floor for almost exactly one half of the action this season. When those four guys aren't on the floor, that rating drops to 111.3 -- beyond awful, like 2005-06 Sonics, worst-of-all-time awful.

Quote:
When Byron Mullens is on the floor, the Clippers are 18.2 points worse defensively. His defensive rating of 120.7 is far and away the worse this season for any player who sees the court regularly, with Jordan Hamilton a very distant second, with 116.4. In fact, even though Mullens plays only 20 percent of the Clippers' minutes, if he's on the bench at a given moment, the team goes from a 27th-ranked defense to one that would be ranked 17th, just behind the Rockets. It's virtually unheard of for a fringe rotation player to have such an adverse effect on a team's overall defensive numbers.

It's early in the season, but among the 10 most commonly used lineups by the Clippers, five would qualify as the league's worst defense. Four of those five units are led by a backcourt of Darren Collison and Jamal Crawford.

Basically what I have been saying all season. Our starting unit is actually very good defensively but the bench is turd on defense. Especially Mullens who is a complete net negative on both ends of the floor. We are a lot better off with Mullens as the bench cheerleader, seat warmer, or water boy. Calling him garbage would be very generous.

Crawford and Collison are also terrible on D but we can live with that if we get a good defensive big like Odom. Also at least they help a lot on the offensive end unlike Mullens.

Some people might know that I was extremely against Mullens. He was a large reason why the Bobcats were dead last in defensive rating the past few seasons and to make matters worse he is turd offensively too. He doesn't even belong in D league. Doc really crapped the bed when he tried to get Mullens. This is the one terrible off season move that he made.

Yea I am being uncharacteristically biased but I really detest Mullens.

Interesting find. Ouch for Byron. Mullens had a DNP last night with Hollins taking his minutes instead. Not sure if that is going to be new trend, or just a one game thing.

That's pretty rough for just one guy.

Mullens has value as a floor spacing shooter, but his shooting is just mediocre - not sure he could really outshoot Griffin on a consistent basis. But that skill would be better served if he played next to a post up player rather than Hollins. And he is of course horrid on defense - but maybe not as bad as the article suggests.

Wasn't a great signing to say the least, but now we have to live with it...he is what he is. Lamar and Matty will help in that department for the 2nd unit when they return. Hopefully then the 2nd unit can tread water instead of sinking.

I'm fine with a big rotation of lamar and Ryan hollins with a little mix of antawn. When the heck is lamar coming back we need him sooner than later

Blake is shooting a bit over 40% from 16-24 ft right now which is solid.

Mullens shot 31.5% from the same distance last season.

So much for floor spacer. lol

Chucking long jumpers and bricking them nearly 70% of the time does not make you a floor spacer. So yea your right. Blake is actually better than Mullens at spacing the floor and he is getting better.

Mullens has no value at all. He is a mediocre 3 point shooter at best too. We woudl be a lot better if his role was that of a human victory cigar. Only play him when we blow out the other team by 20 otherwise he might cause us to lose the lead. lol

I think the article is spot on when it comes to Mullens terrible D. He is a tier worse defensively than the likes Amare Stoudemire, David Lee, and James Harden and that is saying A LOT.

We have to make a new category for bad defender JUST for him.

I would like to see Reggie get more playing time. Once he gets out there and comfortable, I think it will help our D. Although I know we desperately need a 3rd BIG, I think we will get one big O - either Okafor or Odom.

yea, I don't know what that was all about. Mullens wasis a worse / inferiorly productive player and a lower IQ player than DJ, much lower, just didn't make sense.

Still, I don't know how he could be that bad on defense, but this might be part of why he didn't make it on the court last night. I mean he's noticeably bad, but still, who actually thought it was THAT bad?

He looked solid last night. Unfortunately, for him its hard to find minutes for him when you have Dudley + Barnes as SFs. Then a SG rotation of Redick/Crawford/Green.

With Dudley injured and Barnes out he will finally have some playing time.

This isn't so encouraging though, but if you get some defensive guys with them it would be helpful

I am not overly concerned if Odom is around the same level he was last season.

Collison only averages around 14 mpg. Crawford and Collison are not on the floor at the same time for long.

Thanks for posting that article heliflopter.

It's crazy how much of a matador Byron Mullens is. I am not surprised at that defensive rating, he literally seems like he gives up on half the plays.

Interesting how Dudley doesn't help the starters on defense which I have been saying all along. The I think we need to see less of our 3 guard lineup especially if DJ isn't on the court

^Did I miss the part where it said that Dudley who is part of that starter group, doesn't help.

Yeah the part where it said take one clipper starter out and keep the other 4 and then it named reddick, dj, cp3 and Blake and the defensive rating stayed the same no matter who else they were mayched with. So you tell me?
