Knicks-Clippers Preview

By ELI KABERON

Posted Nov 26 2013 6:30PM

When the season began, few expected the New York Knicks' biggest problem to be offense.

Yet the Knicks visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night looking to avoid their worst losing streak of the Carmelo Anthony era, largely because of their inability to put the ball in the basket.

Though Anthony ranks second in the NBA at 26.5 points per game, the team as a whole has taken a major dip. New York ranks 25th in the league with 93.2 points per game, a 6.8 drop from last season, and has averaged 89.0 in regulation over its last five.

The Knicks have shot 41.5 percent from the field during this losing streak, which matches their longest since an eight-game skid Feb. 5-23, 2010 - a year before Anthony's arrival.

Following the latest defeat, 102-91 at Portland on Monday, Anthony admitted his frustration is at an "all-time high."

"We get stagnant at times," said Anthony, who had 34 points and 15 rebounds. "We want to play, then we don't want to play. We just aren't putting a full 48 minutes together, offensively, defensively, we just aren't doing it."

The Knicks (3-10) need improved production from the rest of their roster besides Anthony. Reigning Sixth Man of the Year J.R. Smith has seen his scoring drop from 18.1 points per game to 12.4 this season. Raymond Felton is shooting a career-worst 37.6 percent from the field, including 7 of 34 on 3-point attempts, and could return Wednesday after missing four games with a hip injury.

New York is among the Eastern Conference leaders in 3-pointers attempted (327) but has made just 33.0 percent, compared to 37.6 last season.

"When you lose six in a row, you keep talking about effort," said Smith, at 29.6 percent from 3-point range. "You can't coach effort, you can't teach effort, that's just the game. You have to come out and play hard. If we don't come out and play hard, we're going to keep losing."

Now the Knicks must outscore a Los Angeles team which ranks second in the NBA at 107.9 points per game and is shooting 48.1 percent from the field - a mark the Knicks haven't reached since the season opener. Chris Paul leads the NBA in assists by a wide margin, and five regulars average double figures in scoring.

Los Angeles (10-5) is coming off its most dominant win of the season, 121-82 over Chicago on Sunday. All 12 active players for the Clippers scored, led by 21 points from Jared Dudley. Paul added 16 points and 17 assists for his 14th double-double, and Blake Griffin notched his eighth straight with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Unlike the Knicks, the biggest issues for the Clippers have been on the defensive end. Opponents average 103.3 points on Los Angeles, though coach Doc Rivers has seen his group getting better.

"We are improving. It's clear," Rivers told the team's website. "I thought throughout the Chicago game everybody was in the right spots. We've had unbelievable quarters of defense, so we're progressing and I'm happy about that. I want us to get there but I know it will take time."

The Clippers have allowed an average of 96.8 points on 42.6 percent shooting in the last four games.

"The goal at the end of the night is you want to keep a team under 100," Dudley said. "We know we can score. We know at times our defense is going to have to pick up. Letting teams score 105, 107, and having our offense win is setting us up for failure later on."

Los Angeles held the Knicks below 90 points in both meetings last season - Smith shot 5 for 29 - and won each by double digits. Paul averaged 22.5 points.

The only thing I worry about is K Mart. I'm thinking Blake may have a tough time scoring on that guy. Otherwise I hope our guards torch the Knicks!

Hopefully the team comes out with energy and don't slack off because of the Knicks record. The Knicks are totally capable of beating us even if the record does not show it. However I'm sure we will win, Dudley comes out hot again!

True, so far we have had some shockers this year: Orlando, Lakers, and close calls from Sacramento.

I'm convinced he would play DJ big minutes either way. Though I get that the bench would be...different to say the least.

Yeah, I was thinking this one should be easy because of how the Knicks have been doing so far.. But like you say the team has to treat it like any other game and take the opposition seriously.

Man, everything says this should be an easy win for us. They are one of the worst teams in the league in rebounding. They are struggling big time. Even if Carmelo has a big game, who else can score? They don't have the defense of Tyson Chandler. Yet these are the kind of games I worry about.

We've had a very tough schedule up until now...we MUST take advantage of these situations where we face a bad team. You think OKC or SA would lose to these guys? Let's do this!

Trap game. This is one of those games we should easily take, but not take it easily. Carmelo could go off for 1000 points given the chance.

Yeah I'm actually intrigued by the Dudley/Melo match up. Melo can torch anyone, but Dudley has had to guard quicker SF's than Melo.

In 2 games against NY last year, Dudley averaged 23 points on 58% shooting (58% from 3).

Redick's had some success with NY also. In 4 games last year, he averaged 18.5 points on 51% shooting (46% from 3).

Hopefully that bodes well.

I am also intrigued by Bullock getting some minutes guarding Melo, the rook will learn something today for sure. Anyone remember last year how Grant Hill shut down Melo in the 4th? Kinda hoping Reggie could do that, but then again its just a dream for now.

Even if Melo gets by Dudley (he gets by everyone btw), Jared will send him towards the help defense. Whether DJ helps or not is a coin toss so far this year. He needs to consistently and actively protect the rim, something he can't do with his arms at his side.

I hope the Clippers play with the same intensity they had when they clobbered the Bulls. This should be a win, unless the Clips play down (like they've done before) to the Knicks' level. That would be disastrous.

We already know carmelo is going to kill DUDley, reggie bullock, and whoever else

they throw at him.

If you are the second leading scorer in the NBA you're pretty much unstoppable.

But unless Carmelo can score 103 points by himself it really doesn't matter.

Although I think Blake might be an interesting match up. I don't care what anyone says

I watched Blake put Lebron in check when we played the heat.

The only REAL threat I see is if the knicks just happen to start

hitting the 3's they have been missing all year. And for some reason

when guys are in shooting slumps they find their rhythm against the clippers.

I agree with @ClipperPostman. I really think Blake can play well against these sf that are larger than the average 3 but slightly smaller than the average 4. The only one I can see him have more trouble with is Durant because I believe he has a bit more lateral quickness and handles, where LeBron has more up and down speed like Blake. I've always thought Blake is an underrated perimeter defender for a pf. I also am worried about the three ball, but this might be a game where Clips start showing more defensive consistency.

I'll be at the game with my son, so I'm really hoping it's a great game ending in our favor.

This should be an easy game, but it seems like the Clipper have a tendency to play down to the competition. A fast start would be huge for us. We have to jump on the Knicks and keep them down.

I think the Big 3 of CP, Blake and DJ are all going to have BIG game tonight.

The Knicks really don't have anyone to counter DJ's athleticism and motor, if DJ come out with energy, we win easily.

Blake and CP are going to get theirs regardless of who's guarding them.

With certain players in the game ,like him or a couple of Mem guys I can think of,one we be better served wearing a hockey masks during the entire game to protect oneself. They sharpen their elbows before every game.

You all have said it and let's face it,this is one crappy team we are playing and it is just the kind of crappy team that gives us fits,if not a big "L". We have to play like this is the finals to beat a crappy team.

Carmelo will get his points. I say let him. As long as we block out the rest of that squad. We need this W. Any easy wins need to be won

I do like easy wins because we get to rest our starters, but those games are also really boring.

Oh well, anything for postseason success.

Well channel 5 gave us alive reporter at home. The reason for her being there.....

The clipper at home?

The Knicks at Staples??

Melo, one off the premier scorers= in the league???

Nope. It was all bout Metta. The main question for him was the clips banners.

In his way he said he liked the idea. Loved Docs idea. He did call them selfies, but still, he liked the idea behind.
