I just see what he has done with Portland in such a short time and I really really wonder if it was the worst mistake to let him go. We might not have Doc, but that Terry Stotts clearly can coach! Every one of those players is contributing and it seems sustainable. They are the best team right now and it got me thinking how things might have been different if Olshey was here. I doubt we would have signed Mullens, Hollins or Dudley. He seemed to like grittier players. Blazers are head and shoulders above us right now and it sucks.

That Bledsoe trade looks horrible now. Don't think he would've done it.

But didn't he pass on Paul George or was that another GM?

WTF people, we hit an ice patch and now we are all living in the past, wanting to trade everyone and everything. Monday morning QB city with nothing but regrets? I must be getting old, because sports boards are becoming as bad as political comment sections.

What did they really do? They still have the same core of players save Lilliard that they had prior to olshey. Olshey got 2 role players in Lopez and Williams. Aldridge and Matthews got heathly is what really turned them around. I'd also say that Williams has made an impact but not enough to put them where they're at.

But lets put things into perspective:

the Blazers started hot last season too only to fall out of the playoff picture. I'll take a wait and see approach but I don't attribute most of their recent success to Olshey.

Terry Stotts tweak to the offense is probably most responsible for their hot start, but they are shooting 41% from 3PT range, still only the 22nd ranked team in Drtg, up from 26th last year, and holding opponents to almost 3 pts less/100, but still below average. They have the league's #1 offense, but 41% 3PT shooting as a team is hard to maintain, especially with Matthews shooting 50% on almost 6 attempts.

If their offense maintains, it will be interesting, if not, they will need to defend better to stay high.

Good read on the why's of Portland's success so far this season and IF it's sustainable. Mathews having a career year so far, Batum playing great and Lopez playing pretty well. LA has picked it up recently too.. With a weakest schedule, except for the last few games, It adds up to how they've preform to date. http://wagesofwins.com/2013/11/29/who-i ... g-blazers/

Remember the Knicks early on last year where they couldn't miss from 3pt land and started off amazing and then their shooting came crashing down to earth and then became just a good team??

That's exactly what's going to happen to this Blazers team. Do you guys really think Wes Mathews is going to be shooting 50% from 3 all year long? LOL

The only 2 good teams they've beat all year were going into Portland on the 2nd night of a back-to-back.

Olshey is a good GM, but let's not give him credit for LMA's, Mathews & Batums incredible play early on.

Exactly. While Redick was healthy we were doing pretty well considering our tough schedule. Just needed to keep working on defense. Our bench was finally starting to improve. And were were only going to get better when Barnes came back.

We hit a rough patch and now we're all about "what if's".

We all need to calm down (including myself) and trust in our players that we'll get better as the season goes on.

Olshey has proven himself as a very good evaluator of talent. It was a mistake letting him go, but not one that we can't overcome.

I don't get people who think this trade was horrible. Even with Dudley(playing hurt) struggling, Redick has been great for us. He alone makes this trade a fair one.

Not is we could have found a way to make the trade with just butler and a pick or two and keep bledsoe. It seems very possible especially since the bucks ended up trading for butler not too long after.

Suns got one of the best deals out there. There have to be a few teams kicking themselves for not offering to absorb Butler's contract and give up a second rounder to get bledsoe!

I would love to still have Olshey, he clearly is making a mark in Portland

Butler was dead weight, he's just a chucker. Even a struggling Dudley is still a better all-around player than he. And with Bledsoe, we still don't solve the floor spacing issues. Sure, he's a great perimeter defender, but Redick has also been one of the team's best defenders. The starting lineup isn't the issue, it's the bench. Need some plus defenders coming off the pine, starting with our bigs. I think next season you'll see a greater focus on signing defense-oriented players. Remember, this is Doc's first trial run.

Gomes, Cook, Aminu over George and Hayward isn't necessarily what i would call a good evaluator. Olshey's claim to fame has been picking the first overall pick, and getting the best available PG in a draft with little PG talent...When they had no PG to begin with.

Olshey has commented about how fast he had to "rebuild" for the sake of the fans when it's really the players they had before he got there that are making the difference. Aldridge especially. But lets be clear, Aldridge wanted out before the season started.

I like what bledsoe brought to table and he is clearly showing in Phoenix how a dual pg role can really work. Would have been especially great on defense.

But we traded for Redick without trading bledsoe we could have then traded bledsoe for a legit sf or draft picks.

I thought I wast the only one who felt like this. I think it's the "Newer" clipper fans with this mentality.

There are still 60 games left but we are ready to jump ship. But I think it comes with people who don't really have extensive basketaball knowledge.

When a team brings in an entirely new system on both offense and defense it takes a while to adjust.

One of the biggest differences on defense is the 0 use of Zone defense. That's a huge leap from Del Negro's defense.

As soon as a player got hot we went to Zone defense in the second half. Which is a terrible way to get ready for the playoffs.

Overall the mindset of this team is superb. I've never seen a clippers team so focused on getting better on Defense. That philosophy just wasn't present in prior years.

Even after big wins I hear Chris Paul saying it doesn't matter we need to get better on defense.

That mentality has come from Doc. The reality is the defense won't get better in 20 games. But by playoffs I guarantee no one will one to see us in the first few rounds.

^I agree though you can call me a bandwagon/new fan or w/e. We have already made pretty big leaps defensively. Remember at the start of the season we were the worst defensive team in the league and now were middle of the pack. Still plenty of time to pick up a decent backup big and make a trade. At the very least starting off poorly and getting better as the season goes on is A LOT better than starting off great and falling back to Earth like we did last season.

Its only 19 games in and some people are acting like we have 19 games left before the playoffs.

We haven't even seen this team at 100% strength. Wait until Redick and Barnes are back and hopefully Dudley will play at his normal level. Dudley's poor play makes me wish we did the Butler for Ariza trade.

What if....Clippers don't give away a draft pick (cough, cough Kyrie Irving) to dump a salary (Baron) with a team that had no shot that year anyway. Who was GM then? Could have been a starting line up Irving, George, Blake, and DJ woulda been fun to see but I'll take what the Clippers have.

Would be interesting but eventually one guy would have to be let go. You can't afford 3 max contract players AND DJ.

Not a big fan of Kyrie Irving. He doesn't play any defense and hasn't made any tangible improvements to his team(similar winning record when he is out), doesn't make his teammates better and is more injury prone than Paul.

Now if we could somehow have Paul, George, Blake and DJ that would be interesting but yea its too much $.

I often think of this myself. I also like the fact that we are now a playoff team, but sometimes I do wonder about what that core would have looked like. I wonder if it would have been a catastophe like Cleveland currently is, or a powerhouse like the Thunder have become. Oh well, right now with the addition of Bullock I think we can potentially have that nice blend of youth and veteran leadership like the Spurs have..hopefully Razz

As much I love to argue with you guys if the team will be better with NO. It wouldn't matter because we would have no idea how the sequence of events will turn out. What happen if we never trade Baron and we end up get the 7th pick instead? What happen we pick George instead of Aminu? We would have still trade him for CP3 and New Orleans would thank us. What happen if Neil Oshley pick our coach? I really don't think we would have land Doc Rivers.

There so many independent factors that there was no point arguing about it.

For fans who say Dudley was the worst signing or this is the worst loss or team. I wouldn't say that because the season is still young. Come back to me in 40 games and tell me how the team is. I already see progress and that the point of this season, prepare for the playoff. We tried to win as many games as possible last season, but it fail because there was no progress on the team. This season will be a special one that's for sure.

There is no point arguing about it unless it is fun to do so, as soon as you take it seriously it is pointless. Because as you pointed out the whole "what if" thing has so many variables and unknowns that it is a bit pointless. Its a bit like talking about time travel and saying well if you went back and changed this or that it would then change history and everything would change and suddenly you are in a sci-fi movie Wink

I loved Olshey, I think he did a terrific job here. Portland is a great place to go to for a GM. Great city, great weather ( I hate the heat and humidity ) and the Trailblazers historically, are a pretty good team. Not to mention they have great ownership. Do I think he's doing a good job in Portland? Yes. Do I think he would do a great job here? Yes. Do I think we'd be better with him? I can't say for certain. I just wish the team focused a little more on defense and a little less on offense with the moves they made. Dudley so far has been nearly a non factor, Redick has played really well and injuries happen and cannot be used against someone ( unless you get like Greg Oden type player who is constantly nagged by injuries ).
