Clippers-Cavaliers Preview

By NOEY KUPCHAN

Posted Dec 07 2013 12:16AM

Chris Paul and the offensive-minded Los Angeles Clippers are starting to figure things out defensively.

That doesn't bode well for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are having enough trouble scoring.

The Clippers try to deliver another strong defensive display when they visit the Cavaliers on Saturday night.

While Los Angeles (13-7) is near the top of the NBA with 105.7 points per contest, it's also surrendering 101.1 to rank in the bottom third. The Clippers have allowed 93.6 during a 5-2 stretch, however, giving up 82 or fewer three times.

"It would be one thing if we knew were weren't capable of it, and we didn't have the bodies and the people to execute it, but we do," said the 28-year-old Paul, among the league leaders with 2.3 steals per game. "We have myself, young, athletic guys that know what we're capable of. I may not be athletic, but I am young."

The Clippers were at their best in Thursday's 101-81 win at Memphis. DeAndre Jordan had 10 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks as Los Angeles held Memphis to a season-low 37.7 percent shooting.

"Our defense was keeping us there, then we finally took the game over when we started hitting shots," forward Blake Griffin said. "That's a good lesson for us."

The Clippers, who suffered a 107-97 loss at Atlanta the night before, are now 10-2 when allowing 103 points or fewer.

"I thought the way we responded was good," Griffin added. "There are challenges mentally and physically, and I think that was a mental challenge for us. We were mentally tough in that situation."

Los Angeles had dropped 11 of 12 to the Cavaliers before easily winning 105-89 in Cleveland on March 1. Jamal Crawford led the way with 24 points off the bench while Paul scored 11 with 15 assists.

The Cavaliers (6-13) are shooting 41.7 percent, the league's 29th-worst mark. They've also been limited to 92.6 points per game, going 1-11 when scoring 96 or fewer.

After posting back-to-back wins for the first time, Cleveland was handed a 108-89 loss at Atlanta on Friday. Dion Waiters had a season-high 30 points off the bench and Andrew Bynum added 20 and 13 rebounds, but Kyrie Irving was held scoreless for the first time in his career.

The All-Star point guard, averaging a team-best 19.7 points, went 0 of 9 from the field and 0 of 3 from the foul line in a season-low 20 minutes.

"I'm not worried about Kyrie's shot," coach Mike Brown said. "He's going to make enough shots."

The Cavaliers were outscored 37-20 in the first quarter and 14-4 in transition.

"We've got to come out with a sense of urgency," Waiters said. "Superman's not coming in the locker room to help us. It's just us. We're all we've got so at the end of the day we've got to come out and play."

Bynum is averaging 18.0 points and 10.0 boards over a three-game stretch, well above his season marks of 8.7 and 5.0. He has posted 21.5 and 11.5 in his last 10 against the Clippers, though he hasn't faced them since April 2012 while with the Lakers.

Cleveland, which has won three of its last four on the second of back-to-backs, is 2-0 at home against Western Conference foes. Los Angeles is 0-3 on the road against the East.

Crawford is averaging 19.4 points in 24 games against the Cavaliers since 2003-04, his second-highest mark against any opponent over that stretch.

Hoping that they play with defensive intensity and are moving the ball on offense. These are the kind of games we need to dominate and prove we aren't the clippers of old playing down or up to our opponents.

Unfortunately, Cleveland is just like the ATL...hard as a mofo. Something about those cities that scare me regardless of how bad or good the talent is at the time.

DJ better watch out for Varejao.

Yes it is. Remember when we let the Cavaliers beat us and end their NBA record losing streak. Those kind of games always remind me every team in the NBA needs to be taken seriously.

well said. This team needs to take full advantage of an "easy" games. Sometimes three games are all that may separate a 5th seeding from 3rd seeding. On a side note I'm going to be in Vegas in a few hours I wonder who Vegas has winning this game

These guys always play out of their minds against us. Gotta stay focused and take the home crowd out of it.

Hopefully Anthony Bennet doesn't decide this is his coming out party, and yes these teams scare me more because Clippers always play down their competition.

This should be an amazing game. I just hope that are guys don't underestimate the skills of the Cavs and allow them to get the crowd into it.We need to shut them down in the beginning and not let up because despite their record, they're an amazing team with a great roster and can very well "upset" us.

Kyrie has not looked good so far. Just saw Kyrie's 0-9 game, and he did have some mediocre shot selection in terms of jumpshots for someone who is struggling, two transition three's, contested post fadeaway, but he missed a lot of layups, and he missed some open mid-range jumpers that he really would usually hit in his sleep.

There were reports that he might have been hung-over, he did also go an uncharacteristic 0-3 from the FT line. The previous game was a lot better, but again I saw the pattern of him struggling to finish at the rim. He shot like 40% at the rim and better on his jumpshots. It's hard to imagine he just continues to miss shots at the rim.

A report said that he's shooting an abysmal 39.3% FG at the rim this season! Good players shoot high 50% to low/mid 60% at the rim!

At some point I'd have to think that his shots will start dropping. Mike Brown got Jack with the idea of using Kyrie off the ball more, but he's been shooting terribly in catch and shoot situations, so it hasn't been so good so far.

Hope Kyrie doesn't decide to come off his slump tonight. Hopefully CP3 will be aggressive and dominate him assuming its Kyrie that is guarding him. He can't guard a garbage can.

We must shut down CJ Miles and Waiters. They killed us last year.

Agreed. Especially after what Waiters just did coming off the bench against the Hawks. He can score and our wing defense needs to be aggressive and force bad shots.

One thing you can count on tonight, someone on the Cavs will have their best game of the year/life against us. They( opponents) love to tee off against us. But our guys can let that person do their damage, and just stop everyone else.

I really hate these games more then games against teams like GS. ya just don't know what you are going to get, with great teams you know.

good dunk DJ, but you need to play D and Rebound, stop watching people rebound and put it back up in your face

Cp3 really lost his three point shot. Blake playing well but shouldn't attempt any more midrange jumpers they won't fall.

Good start for Willie. HE does not need to go to the bench with 2 early fouls.

Great start for Griffin as well. Doing it all. 2 points, 3 assists, and 4 rebounds.

That wouldn't have been a foul if DJ used his left hand. It's just because he used his right that it seemed like a foul

I wonder if the Cavs will make Varejao available. We could use a big who could rebound.

He's way too injury prone IMO. Even as a backup playing limited minutes, I'm not sure he could be trusted to still be around come playoff time.

Ofcourse we gave up 29 points in the first quarter. Why does it feel like we never begin games with the proper defensive mentality/

We just don't feel like a good team, which is not ok given we have cp3 and griffin. We should not be a bad team with those two.

We don't have the personnel to really compete - yes I know we have injuries but even teams with injuries that have quality remaining talent should find a way to win. This team has the worst attitude.

Terrible defense- you can't allow a lob to the opposition after your made basket- come on.

And again we get schooled by an inferior opponent.

Is it just me,or do you guys get tired of us playing from behind all the time? Doesn't mean we won't catch them, but why shouldn't they have to catch us for once.

You can not get down by 10 or more on the road! You should come out aggressive on the road because even though the home team may not sustain the lead the crowd will and officiating is always in favor of the home team! Two factors that could affect you on the road + Crowd + Officiating! LETS GO CLIPPERS

Well the shooting % went up from 34% to now a fire-hot 43% and take the lead.
