Pelicans-Clippers Preview

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO

Posted Dec 18 2013 2:34AM

The Los Angeles Clippers don't seem to have much trouble scoring at home.

That's likely to continue against the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Clippers look to build on perhaps their best performance of the season Wednesday night when they try to send the Pelicans to an 0-3 start to their road trip.

Los Angeles (17-9) leads the NBA with an average of 111.5 points at home, winning nine of 11 games. That's in stark contrast to the 98.7 points the Clippers average on the road.

They continued their offensive prowess at Staples Center on Monday by beating usually stingy San Antonio 115-92, shooting 51.3 percent from the floor - 11 of 23 from beyond the arc.

"It tells you they're in it mentally," coach Doc Rivers said of the Clippers recording their most lopsided win over the Spurs. "Very proud of them. I think they wanted to win very bad."

Los Angeles could be in for another productive day on their own court since the Pelicans (11-12) are among the worst defensive teams on the road, surrendering an average of 106.5 points while going 4-7.

The Clippers have won five of six against New Orleans, including three in a row. They won for the fourth time in five home meetings Dec. 19, 2012, holding the Pelicans to 38.7 percent from the floor - 2 for 19 from long range - in a 93-77 victory.

Blake Griffin will look to capitalize on the defensively porous Pelicans after scoring 27 points - his highest total in 13 games - on 8-of-14 shooting with nine rebounds Monday. That was a welcome change after the All-Star forward averaged 17.1 points and 8.7 boards while shooting 44.2 percent during the Clippers' 4-3 road trip.

Chris Paul is also looking to build on a strong performance after tallying 23 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals Monday. The star guard is averaging 22.0 points and 10.8 assists in four home meetings with New Orleans, the club he spent his first six seasons with before being dealt to Los Angeles.

The Pelicans opened this five-game road trip with a 102-93 loss at Denver on Sunday, and followed that up by losing 104-93 to Golden State two nights later.

"Just a bad game from the start," coach Monty Williams said of Tuesday's defeat, which included an 18-point halftime deficit.

New Orleans could use a better performance from the floor after making just 37.5 percent Tuesday, including 5 of 18 from 3-point range. The team wasn't much better from long range against the Nuggets, going 7 for 24.

Having Tyreke Evans back would help. A sprained ankle has sidelined the guard for two games, but it's unclear when he'll return. He averages 19.0 points in 10 meetings with the Clippers.

Ryan Anderson is averaging 28.5 points over the past four road games, but he was limited to 21 while going 6 for 16 from the field against the Warriors. He could be in for an even stiffer test with a likely matchup against Griffin. Anderson was held to 12.3 points per game on 31.5 percent from the field - 7 for 29 from 3-point range - in four meetings with the Clippers last season.

From the half of the game I watched last night, the Pelicans looked pretty terrible. They couldn't stop anything from anywhere. I would look for more of that tonight against us. Neither Evans nor Davis is expected to return for this westcoast game...so there's really nothing I can get excited about honestly. The only trouble they can cause against us, of what I can see, is maybe their rebounding ability from the 3 and 4 with Ryan Anderson and our Aminu starting (Aminu's averaged 9.0 rebounds in the last 8 games from SF).

Not really any storylines I find interesting anymore. I guess you can say Gordon wakes up when he plays us, averaged 24.5 points against us last season, but can't really pretend watching Gordon take 18 jumpers is still interesting. I've never been a huge fan of Jrue Holiday and he isn't given the same scoring opportunities with NO so even less there. In the end I guess I'm watching Amundson. The Ponytail has average 4.2 points and 6.4 rebounds in the last 5 games averaging 15 minutes, wonder what he does tonight! Gunna be a good game...

Didn't Ryan Anderson hit like 9 three's on us last year? I hate going up against him.

I can't wait to see EJ back on the Clippers court, he's still one of my fav Clips of all time.

I still think of Jason Smith's dirty hit every time we play them. I hope Blake continues to go off.

I also would like to see Barnes back out there.

I know the Pelicans are gonna show some grit because they don't want to go 0-4 and they have some talent. But we need to gain some momentum from that SA win. Show these guys who's boss tonight!

The only scary thing is that here is another crappy team we play and you know what happens against crappy teams. Time to turn the table on bottom tier teams.

No reason for this team to be overconfident with so much work ahead. Again the Suns not far off and the sense of urgency to catch up to the top three teams in the west. Team has been playing better but still looks like getting homecourt will be a huge factor in any round.

He averages over 10 three FGA per 48 so hitting 9 again isn't out of his range.

Blake is starting to make the effort to cover deep players so this ought to be an interesting contest to watch.

Apparently Anderson was held to 12.3 points a game on 31.5% shooting in 4 games against the Clippers last year. Still, a great shooter can get hot at any time!

In tonight's game we have a first and a worst:

Anderson leads the NBA in FT% at 98%.

DJ is dead last in the NBA in FT% at 40%. DHo is 2nd worst at 56%

Blake is tied for 4th in the NBA in FTAs at 180 but is 11th in FTM with 120.

^ Blake's tied for 4th FTA's attempted? I like that. Not too concerned about being 11th in makes, we know he's not the best FT shooter, however he's almost 67% which is an improvement.

DJ is first in the NBA in FG% at 63.5%

Tyreke is one of the worst in the NBA with a FG% of 41%. EGor not far behind at 43%. Jamal Crawford tied with him.

I am a glass half full kinda guy. Clippers are 11-3 vs Western conference foes. Best in NBA.

OKC is 14-4 and SAS are 11-4

Indiana is 14-2 vs the Leastern Conference.

If we handle our business and don't take any quarters off, this game shouldn't be too much of a problem (knock on wood). I have a feeling Blake is going to have a big game tonight.

Just got to hope our team comes out and plays like they played against the spurs.. You make your case as a contender by beating other contenders but you validate and verify that status by beating these teams..

Evans isn't really a huge surprise, but Davis was supposed to miss atleast another week and a half to make the lower end of his timetable. Still don't think the Pelicans have enough scoring to beat us. Should be a much tougher defensive matchup now though. Turn of events and now this will be far more interesting to watch.

Additionally, Doc says he wants to try and avoid using Barnes if he can. Was kindof looking forward to watching Matt so...we'll see.

Bring on Tyreke. The more he shoots the more he misses.

Okay so Evans and Davis aren't starting but did indeed suit up

EDIT: Anderson couldn't have been more open for that 3 if he was in shootaround. Dudley answers though. My dawg.

They're playing him very loosely. The first one was after a loose ball that ended up in New Orlean's hands. He's a hot shooter. But our offense looks so good.

Davis and Evans came in quick.
