Maalik Wayns and the Ticking Clock

Just a quick note to observe the fact that Maalik Wayns has been activated by the Clippers. (Ben Bolch has it at the end of this article here for the LA Times... beware the paywall!)

Who cares? No one! Then why does it matter? Because it's January 3, and if he's activated it means Wayns is no longer injured which means he will almost certainly be cut (or traded) by January 10. See this article by the mighty Steve Perrin if you're confused. In said article Clipper Steve reports that Marc Stein reports that Maalik Wayns is on the list of a bunch of league-wide un-guaranteed contracts, throwing into confusion our local supposition that Wayns was effectively guaranteed-for-the-season because of his injury. But... it appears Wayns contract was NOT guaranteed as of December first.

So, in the next few days we should see some action, Wayns and perhaps Stephen Jackson will (probably) be cut by the Clips, reducing their roster to fourteen or thirteen... the Clips could then be lined up to chase a more effective "third big". OR, failing that, could re-sign Wayns or Jackson to ten-day deals. In the case of Wayns, I don't know why they'd do that, in the case of Jackson, maybe they keep him around because he's fairly large (in both good and bad ways), he has a way with a headband, and seems happy to be here. - John Raffo

Lamar Odom is set to be resigned this month! But should we really look to Lamar or should we move on! The Clippers are almost certain to waive Maalik Wayns and maybe Stephen Jackson so that leaves the roster at 13! Bynum and Odom? Odom and wait for Okafor! Odom and sign a Shannon Brown for Wing Athleticism - Our Version Of Pheonix Gerald Green?

What do you think the Clippers should do?

I actually like having Jack around. He seems really engaged and helping mentor our guys.

I would like to see Wayns waived to get a legit big, not sure who though. Alternatively, at least waive him to keep a roster spot open so we can wait and see what we really need the most later in the season.

It's hard because every single one of these waivable players is enthusiastic and seems to like being a Clipper...and, in the case of Jax, a positive influence on the team. But I suppose it's inevitable that one or two of these guys will have to leave for someone we need more.

Well I am really glad we can open up a spot by getting rid of Wayns. I am also glad that it could mean we see a proper back up big soon.

The Orlando Magic will waive forward Hedo Turkoglu at 5 p.m. on Friday, reports the Orlando Sentinel's Brian K. Schmitz. The roster move is a long time coming for the Magic, who have retained the veteran forward -- his contract especially -- as a potential trade chip.

^^^^ IS HE A GOOD OPTION! I have heard many say they would like to get Hedo

Odom seems to be the realest option and Bynum seems to be a good option. With those two I feel really confident we can make some nice noise.

I'd rather play the wait and see with Bynum. He's a game changer.

What If We Can Get Both Bynum and Odom

Link Bynum put up 36 against the Clippers against Deandre Jordan

Link

Both of them could make serious noise for us! It would cost us Wayns and Jackson unless we trade for Bynum which I don't see happening

If we can get bynum that would be the best case scenerio. But for his contract minimum there will be quite a few teams interested.

Odom at this point is worse case scenario. Already missing 3rd of the season including camps Odom realistically probably won't be as effective as many expect.

Maybe his defense. But honestly at this point we need some bench scoring. And Odom was painfully to watch offensively last year, but made up in defense.

Hedu and Odom together may be interesting. What odom lacks in offense Hedu could give us, and what Hedu lacks in defense odom could give us.

The problem with Hedu is he is really slow and looks out of it most of the time. Might kill the clippers style of play.

If we get Bynum and Odom this will lead us more than WCF.

I did see a quote saying the Lamar was still on the radar and our players want him.

Where is Greg Oden? Didn't he do something with Miami?

He's an interesting guy. The only problem with a trade is that he doesn't have to play. What if he decides to be "injured"? If he retires whomever will have a big hole which is unfillable with a Free Agent this late. What of he decides to be a three point shooter? What if he decides to talk only in Klingon? In a way he calls his own shots.

The you tube stuff was from years ago. I'm still bothered by Jamison. He looks heavy and is a total bust.

i say we either let go of wayns or mullens possibly trade him somewhere for money or second rounder. Sign bynum and odom. Our bench would definitely be deadly and deep.

Paul/Collison Reddick/crawford/green/bullock Dudleybarnes/jackson Griffin/jamison/odom Jordan/bynum/hollins

Holy hell. Whoever thought DJ was a capable NBA player and that Vinny not playing him was the reason he wasn't effective really needs to watch that Andrew Bynum video.

That's probably the worst defense I've ever seen. Man, he's come a long way thanks to Doc.....not because of more minutes.

Again, he was always very capable and much better then some here gave him credit for. Just another positive good sign when a young player is getting even better.

If he is talking about getting cut what does he have to really be mad about? He is a d-leaguer. Of course they'd cut him for proven talent.

Miami has Oden for $900,000. He worked out Dec 27th. Will he be able to play at all? Spolstra said Greg would be saved for the PO's if he can play.

If you're Miami do you gamble on a guy who basically always been injured who wants to play versus a guy who's been injured maybe half of his career but has an attitude problem and may not want to play at all. Do they cut Oden? Also if they trade which they won't they have to eat his salary.

As I understand this and I can't do math Miami has 15 players and a salary of ~ $83.9 mil and hard cap is $71,748,000.

Does this mean anything??

I think you guys are spot on about Maalik going bu-bye. The paper today said although activated and even in uniform, he limps around the practice facility and is not really game ready. He was activated for a reason.
