Report: Ivan Johnson Waived by Chinese Team Zhejiang

Emiliano Carchia with Sportando.net is reporting that Ivan Johnson has been waived by Zhejiang of the Chinese Basketball Association:

Chinese team Zhejiang announced that they have waived Ivan Johnson and signed Mike Harris. Johnson was averaging 25.8ppg, 10.2rpg and 2apg in CBA in 25 games. Mike Harris has played with the Jazz this season averaging 4.2ppg in 20 games.

Chris Vivlamore, beat writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, previously reported that the Hawks have interest in bringing Johnson back to the team. Johnson's agent, Jeremiah Haylett, told HawksHoop.com in August that Johnson intended to return to the NBA upon conclusion of the CBA season.

Ivan Johnson Becomes Free Agent

4:01pm: The Clippers might have interest in Johnson, according to Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times

10:13am: The Zhejiang Golden Bulls have waived Ivan Johnson, the team announced, allowing the power forward to become a free agent and pursue reported NBA interest from several teams, including the Hawks (translation via Shaopeng Shen on Twitter; hat tip to Sportando's Emiliano Carchia). The team also announced the signing of small forward Mike Harris, whom the Jazz waived earlier this month, in a corresponding move.

Johnson was averaging 26.0 points and 9.9 rebounds in China, so it's unclear why the team released him other than as a favor. Perhaps Johnson and the team agreed to a buyout, though that's just my speculation. He'd become a mainstay in Atlanta's rotation the past two seasons before signing with the Chinese team in late August. The Knicks seemed to be the most engaged among the NBA clubs that eyed the Jeremiah Haylett client this past summer.

Any NBA team that signs Johnson will have to arrange for FIBA clearance before the move can become official, but that shouldn't be too much of a hurdle. He could be in the market for a 10-day contract, though I wouldn't be surprised if he commanded a deal for the rest of the season right away.

Harris made the Jazz out of camp, and while he averaged 4.2 points in 11.3 minutes per game for Utah, the team decided to waive the fourth-year NBA veteran before his contract became guaranteed. Unless he signed a multiyear deal, which ex-NBA players rarely do with Chinese teams, he could return to the NBA in another month or two, once Zhejiang's season is complete

I'm done with Odom cause it's gonna take him a while to get on game shape. Let's give Johnson a try

Man, this would be awesome if we can pick him up.

I love his tenacity and rugged, bang em' up presence.

Something this team needs inside.

Hopefully we get him.

I wish we waited a got Ivan instead of Turk. Our 4/5 spot is wasted with Hollins, BJ, Jamieson, and Turk.

Don't think we sign Ivan (PF) with Hedo signed for the rest of the year. PF is where Turk is going to be playing according to Doc. We need a back up C.

If Doc wants to use him as an undersized C. He has the bulk for C, just not the length. So we'll see, cause Hedo is doing backup PF and is signed for the rest of the year like tense said.

We have an extra spot on the roster since cutting Morris, maybe we were waiting for Ivan, who knows, but I do remember when we used Reggie as a C, although he's a pf, i think it works, even Horford is used as a C.

If he was 2-3 inches taller and could play center he would be.

I think we just have to face the reality that Hollins is

our guy.

All these "Speculations" of a Decent back up C have been

smoke, and this includes Odom.

I'm done with it.

im pretty sure he'll bring in someone else

I feel you on the frustration, and acquiring Hedo just took up a roster spot so I don't think Doc is even considering getting a defensive backup big Sad

Any idea if he was waived because of his attitude or anger control problems? Dude was already banned from the Korean Basketball League for life lol. Maybe China was next on his list. I don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't waive a guy providing 26 points and 10 rebounds out of charity.

I hope not, because if DJ goes down for any appreciable mount of time...we're f#%ked. Ouch.

Ideally, our backup bigs would consist of Ivan for his toughness, Hedo for point forward skills, and Bynum for his offensive skills and big body for defense.

Sucks that we've essentially wasted spots on Mullens & Jamison. I actually am fine with Hollins for 5 min/game, but not much more, which won't help in the playoffs.

I haven't seen him play much, but I the possible lineups of Ivan/DJ, Ivan/Blake, or even Ivan/Hedo should be better than any lineup with Hollins.

I'm all for getting Johnson I think he be a nice extra for the 4 spot. I know we have the extra spot but adding him only makes since if we move or can cut Jamison AND Mullens.

We'd have to cut somebody. No reason to have that many back ups for the 4 and none for the 5. Hollins or Jamison would be on the waiver wire and that would be fine with me.

From Insider:

Forward Ivan Johnson decided to play in China this season instead of signing with an NBA team after none would match his asking price. Last week there was a report that several NBA teams have interest in talking to him once his season is over with Zhejiang Chouzhou Golden Bulls in February. Well, they don't have to wait as he was released by the Chinese team on Wednesday, according to Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:.

Previously Vivlamore reported the Hawks could re-sign the forward and that the Bulls, Knicks, Pacers and Clippers my have interest now after targeting him in the summer.

Johnson should be easy to sign as he will likely accept a rest-of-season, minimum contract.

I think we should sign him and take the hit and release Jamison. I wish it could be Mullens, but that two year thing can bite us. If we could work a trade maybe for Ariza giving up Dudley and Barnes, then maybe we can play Hedo as a back up 3.

I'm a huge Ivan fan, think he is just what the team is missing.
