http://m.sfgate.com/warriors/article/Wa ... 188027.php

Jon Barry qualifies as a California basketball historian - having been born in Oakland to a Warriors' Hall of Famer, having played his high school ball at De La Salle-Concord and having started his collegiate career at Pacific.

But not even Barry, now an analyst at ESPN, could have predicted that the Warriors and Clippers would become the state's marquee matchup - an escalating rivalry that demands national television and radio attention.

"Are you kidding me? The Clippers being the rivals for anybody?" Barry said in a phone interview ahead of calling the Warriors' games on radio Thursday and television Friday. "They haven't been good enough to have a rivalry until recently. But it's become a fun one. It usually gets a little chippy.

"Both coaches have said, 'Look, we haven't accomplished anything. We've both won one playoff series in the past few years. We're nobody that has been on the map ever.' It's two teams that are in similar situations, and there's no love lost - which makes it fun to watch."

The Warriors have won two Pacific Division titles in their history, the last one in 1976. The Clippers have one division crown, which they claimed last season. In fact, the teams have both been among the division's bottom three in 17 of the past 20 seasons.

Things certainly are trending in a different direction these days, with the Clippers and Warriors entering the new year in the division's top two spots for the second straight time - the only two times since they started playing together in the Pacific in 1978-79.

Still, Warriors head coach Mark Jackson, who grew up in New York with the rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox and became a basketball fan during the days of Magic Johnson's Lakers vs. Larry Bird's Celtics, shudders when Warriors-Clippers is called a rivalry.

During a gaggle interview after Wednesday's practice, it took four tries just to get Jackson to acknowledge a question about the matchup. Testy? Nope. Rivalry? Nope. Bad blood? Nope.

Intense competition?

"Thank you for the remix," Jackson joked. "In this league, when you're competing and getting after it and jockeying for playoff position in the same division, it's exciting. We embrace it. They embrace it. But there are a lot more games than just the ones against the Clippers."

It sure doesn't seem like it when these teams play each other. This season, the Clippers refused to have pregame chapel with the Warriors - something every other team does before every other game in the league. In their Christmas Day meeting, Draymond Green and Blake Griffin were ejected, and Andrew Bogut had dust-ups with both Griffin and Chris Paul.

A season ago, the Warriors took three of four games from the Clippers, but the storylines rarely led with the scores. In the teams' first game, there were seven technical fouls, and the Clippers griped about David Lee mocking Griffin's penchant for flopping and the way the Warriors celebrated their victory.

To start a sequence, during which the teams faced off three times in 18 days last season, the Warriors crushed the Clippers by 21 points and got hundreds of thousands of views for a video of their bench jeering Griffin's three-point attempt that clanged off the side of the backboard.

The Clippers returned the favor three days later by overemphasizing their celebrations during a 26-point victory that had Jackson glaring toward the opposing bench during a timeout. After the Warriors won the final game of the season series, customarily proper Jamal Crawford said the Clippers had bigger aspirations than celebrating every little thing.READ FULL ARTICLE

A win against these pesky Warriors would be awesome. I hope the Clippers come out with gusto and not let up. This is a statement game if there ever was one.

Wizards beat the Warriors. Wizards do not have nearly the good players that we have. The Warriors should fire Mark Jackson and hire Del Negro ( it would make them a lot easier on us lol )

Come Clips execute tonight and get up in Steph Currys grill. He averages 9 assist but also 4 turnovers as well. Make them uncomfortable and make them play your game of basketball. Silence the crowd. Silence the critics. Lock 'Em down defensively. More importantly get that W tonight Clips. Hopefully we all can celebrate DJ and Chris and/or Jamal being named All-Stars and the Win against the Warriors ( They need a new name like we have given the Lakers = Fakers ). Ohhh Lets make this face happen again tonight

Prediction

The last four trips up the Pacific coast have ended badly for the Clippers. L.A. hasn't snagged a victory inside Oracle Arena since Christmas 2011.

Which Pacific Division power do you think will come out on top?

"Los Angeles ClippersGolden State WarriorsSubmit Votevote to see results

Despite the torrid run that Griffin is on, I don't think the Clippers' luck will change on Thursday.

Points typically come by the truckloads when these teams square off (449 total in their first twomatchups), so it's hard to bet against the side working with a full complement of offensive weapons. If the Splash Brothers turn the Oracle into their personal water park, the Clips won't be able to keep pace.

Expect fast-paced, hotly contested, fiercely intense action when these teams take the floor. Basically, everything you'd expect to see in any good rivalry-you know, since that's not what this is.

Then, expect to see the Warriors pick up a crucial home victory. Again.

Warriors 113, Clippers 107"

Steph galloping down the court last season in celebration is fresh in my mind. Bothers me more than bazemore mocking blake.

The team should watch last game and last years game for motivation

I hope the guys show up loose. All the pressure is on them. We have 5 games on that team and one of these days our PG will come back.

We win and it's devastating for them, damn near ends their chances at a division title and they really have to start thinking about just staying in the top 8.

They win and whatever, it's our 2nd on back to back after a long trip and all they did was cut the deficit to 4.

I'm not crying if we lose but if we win it really would be demoralizing for them. Should be a fun game to watch.

I agree, dude! Don't want to be down 1-2 on those guys if we have capable players... I feel that last year warriors were better so far in.... but we need to get in them early and not lose focus. David Lee needs to have an off game and curry + assist.

Even tho I have Lee on my fantasy but I'll be fine with an off game. 13-0 I'm str8

If the Clippers need to watch that game for motivation, then they lack motivation.

Think the motivation is there, now let's get a win.

I swear, if the Clippers embarrass me again at Oracle, I will just go to see them in Sacramento from now on. It's troubling to be a bay area transplant and see all of these Warriors shirts here. It makes me want to slap someones momma.

Can we beat the infamous TNT curse, maybe we can since charles barkley said something nice about Blake. It might have been the monkey on his back (probably not!)

Finally finish a long road trip, then we immediately get a road game on back to back, kind of lame scheduling. We had a good game against Toronto on our last back to back, so hopefully we can repeat that here, Golden State isn't really doing any better than post-Gay trade Toronto.

This game's definitely winnable. When Warriors are hot, they can play with the best, but they're too inconsistent.

I expect this to be a very physical game. All I hope is Blake and DJ not get too emotional and get called for stupid fouls.

I actually am a fan of the warriors. They are similar to our team in terms of the starting 5. But whenever we play them I can't stand them. I swear if Bogut or Draymond do some stupid **** i'm punching the closest warrior fan to me.

So many elements against us in this one no CP3, back to back, on the road, and the fact they just got home from a long road trip and have to leave again.

@WinningBasket, I like where you are going with that. If we could get two posters in this game with your choices of Bogut, Lee, and Green topped with a crying Mark Jackson followed by an ejection that would great.

Well personally, I am nervous as all get out with this game. We had to work too hard to win last night, GS hates our guts (feeling is of course mutual), they will cheat and get away with it as the TNT refs will be calling the game, the game is on TNT, and Charles "I-never-met-a-cheeseburger-I-didn't-like" Barkely will be there bad-mouthing us. All makes me nervous.

Let's beat the holy hel* out of these guys.

@namzug, let's hope the basketball gods hear our pleas and make 3 posters (Bogut, Lee, AND Green) to make up for the Christmas Day fiasco by the refs. I like the "crying Mark Jackson" image. LMAO

I just got reminded of the little fiasco with Jordan Crawford when Blake posterized Humphries. I can see the whole team crying about their bigs getting posterized. I will miss Stak5 being on our sidelines keeping them on check, because they know they aren't bout that life.

I'm hoping Blake goes off.

Charles has been jumping on too our ship as of late, saying Blake has been imposing his will, that DJ should be an All-star, just showing glimpses of how he is going to jump ship soon. I predict him going back to his early prediction of us being contenders pretty soon, saying it's cuz of Blake imposing his will and getting tougher as a team. His exit clause will be the lack of depth in our front court.

I predict many turnovers for the Warriors, and Mark saying that they gave us the game because of it.

The refs will keep a tight rein on the players and allow no rough stuff. Also because the whole sports world knows we got screwed out of that game expect us to get a few calls. (I hope) The main thing is that BG has to stop being Rasheed Wallace. They will call a technical for the slightest infraction, and I'm sure that the refs have made this real clear to both coaches. I think they will cut BG some slack because the whole world is watching.

Big Game for DJ tonight i bet after learning that he was not chosen as an All-Star Reserve. Chris and Blake both made it.

Did you guys see DJ (and JAMAL) got snubbed for the AS game. CP3 was picked as a reserve though.

ClippersDA

Dj was deserving but hardly snubbed. So many great players didn't make it. Cousins and Davis could have made it but didn't. Most 6th men aren't all stars either. They need to stay focused. Team wins more important than individual accolades (although I did strongly want blake and Chris to be starters). Jamal is the favorite for 6th man if he cares about being honored. Should focus on that

Well David West could be considered to be snubbed too so it could affect both teams if the players let it.

Oops, I got a bit confused there.

The AS game is a popularity contest like King of the Junior Prom. Kobe asked that he not be considered since he didn't play. Guess what the Great Unwashed did? When DJ gets a commercial he'll make it.
