Jazz-Clippers Preview

By ELI KABERON

Posted Feb 01 2014 3:23AM

While the Los Angeles Clippers won't blame a noticeable amount of fatigue for the end of their latest winning streak, it's hard to deny that their recent schedule has been rather full.

Set to play their 10th game in 15 days, the Clippers will look to bounce back Saturday night at Staples Center with an eighth straight victory over the Utah Jazz.

Los Angeles held off Washington 110-103 on Wednesday, but never led in Thursday's 111-92 loss at Golden State - its first defeat in five games and just its third in its last 13. The Warriors held a 66-22 edge in points in the paint and a 53-34 advantage in rebounding as the Clippers (33-16) were held 14 points below their season average while playing their fifth game in seven nights.

"It is what it is. At the end of the day everybody goes through something like this at some point and I swear everybody plays 82 (games),' said coach Doc Rivers. "We're doing well through it; we've lost one game, this one. Now we've got to try to get our legs back in time for (Utah)."

After playing eight of nine on the road, the Clippers will play six of their next seven at Staples. Even more enticing for Los Angeles, it won't play another back-to-back set until after the All-Star break and has just one between now and St. Patrick's Day after having three in the past two weeks.

"It won't be easy but we'll get home, get some rest, regroup and get back on our horse," guard Jamal Crawford said.

This time, it'll be the Jazz who are playing the second end of a back-to-back. Utah (16-30) had a chance to record its first three-game winning streak of the season Friday against Golden State, but couldn't hang on to a seven-point halftime lead as Stephen Curry had 44 points in the Warriors' 95-90 victory.

Despite the loss, the team got another strong performance from guard Alec Burks. Burks averaged 18.8 points as a starter in the five games Gordon Hayward missed with a hip flexor, and he's averaged 17.3 off the bench in the past four as a reserve after putting up 26 on Friday.

Burks may need to step up again Saturday. Marvin Williams (heel) and Derrick Favors (hip) missed Friday's loss and starter Jeremy Evans left in the second quarter after a nasty fall.

All are questionable against the Clippers as Utah tries to improve on its 3-7 record on the second night of a back-to-back.

One of those losses came on Dec. 28 at Staples Center as Blake Griffin scored a season-high 40 points and Los Angeles won 98-90.

Griffin has averaged 25.4 points in the 14 games Chris Paul has been out of the lineup.

I hope Clippers rested well enough to have the energy to compete in this game, get more rebounds and points in the paint, and get a W. Thursday's arse-whooping by the Warriors showed that the Clippers, after logging a grueling road trip, we're completely gassed out and had no legs and arms, lol. The Jazz are on their own back-to-back, so perhaps they'll be too exhausted to put up a fight. Win this one, Clips!

I understand why we have so many b2b, but THE LEAST the nba league office could do is make all of them HOME GAME only stands! That way, the fans, both paying and watchers, would get more performance play out of BOTH teams! Come on, Adam Silver, have some balls and do this at least! Then US fans won't have to watch games like we did last night, and ALL FANS can enjoy games like tonight's clipper game knowing each team gave it's best effort physically at least with no jet lag excuses, ok? Maybe I should make this a new thread? Lol!

Well we are going to see how we bounce back tonight. Team should be rested enough and be looking to make a statement against Utah.

It would be even nicer to have LeBron, Durant or George... and only slightly less realistic.

Find, but our real need is a back up C. Plus Hayward is a RFA and someone's going to pay him more then he's worth and I don't want it to be us.

It would be nice.

what is he worth? in your opinion.

I'd say he's worth about 7-9 annually.

Someone will pay him at least that and to me you can get better value in someone like Ariza or Aminu just to name 2 off the top of my head.

Why bother trading Dudley for him when we can get him for Green, Mullens and Jamison? Save Dudley to trade straight for Greg Monroe.

What he is worth and what he will get is 2 different things.. I'm pretty sure he gets close to the maximum if not the max once he gets to RFA because somebody will want to make him that offer.. Something we just can't really afford.

I know there are people who say it "Shouldn't matter about the schedule they should

win every game". And usually those are people who have never competed in anything.

But the reality is Watching the warriors game Clippers were out of Gas.

Whoever approved that scheduling should be shot.

We are expected to win against teams like the Jazz so to think we need to psych ourselves up for this game is a little alarming, we should be reserving that sort of energy against the better teams in the league in which we don't have such a good record against so far

I completely agree. I don't really like making excuses but this seems like an exception. I said it last night and I'll say it again.

9 games in 9 different cities in 13 days is difficult for any team.

At least we have the Jazz at home tonight. If we lose this game, there won't be any excuses though. We need to dominate tonight.

OKC, playing their back-to-back game on the road, just got beaten (by 15 points) by the Wizards. Looked like OKC players were gassed too, much in the same way Clippers were against the Warriors. These back-to-back games are brutal. I hope the Jazz will also be gassed as they are also on their second night of a back-to-back too. Clips might as well take advantage of the schedule.

I was upset at the Warriors loss but I finally realized how everything happened

Tuesday Wizards beat Warriors 88-85

Wednesday Clippers beat Wizards 110-103

Thursday Warriors beat Clippers 111-92

Friday Warriors beat Jazz 95-90

Saturday Clippers play Jazz ?

Friday Thunder beat Brooklyn

Saturday Wizards beat Thunder

Its obvious that Back-to-back games are bad on teams. You do not get full production out of the team because of tiredness.

Basketball is the only other real contact sport besides Football. Do Football teams play back-to-back? Nah. I think basketball shouldn't have back-to-back or atleast cut down on them.

I got a question?

As a coach, on the second night of a back-to-back would you consider starting your bench and bring your starters off the bench that night? It could pay dividends. Bench comes out with energy from not logging as many minutes the night before, and the starters can rest a little.

Would you do it?

You would have to have a really coachable team with no big egos to do that. The Spurs might be able to get away with that kind of strategy, for example.

Nope. I know its hard to play that many games but they're professional basketball players that are getting paid to do it.

Games like these you need to maybe rely more on the bench to take more minutes.
