Heat-Clippers Preview

By ELI KABERON

Posted Feb 04 2014 9:07PM

The Los Angeles Clippers have been terrific at home, but they haven't played in their building very often lately.

They'll get that chance Wednesday night when they open a five-game homestand with a matchup against a Miami Heat team that hasn't won on the road in this series in over six years.

The Clippers, who will be playing for just the third time in Los Angeles in the past 12 games, have averaged 112.6 points in winning seven in a row on their home floor. Forward Blake Griffin has been a catalyst, averaging 26.6 points and shooting 59.5 percent during that stretch.

Los Angeles' strength at home will be countered by the Heat's dominance in the month of February. Since 2010-11, the team's first season with LeBron James and Chris Bosh on the roster, Miami has gone 34-6 in the month. That includes 14 victories in a row and wins in 22 of its last 23 February games.

"As long as we don't turn the ball over and we rebound, or at least keep it close, we have a great chance of winning every game," James said. "We know that we are going to shoot the ball, we're going to share the ball and we're going to defend."

The Heat (34-13) topped Detroit 102-96 on Monday as Dwyane Wade led the way with 30 points and 10 rebounds while James added 24 points, 11 assists and eight boards. Wade's performance was especially encouraging for Miami, as he played more than 37 minutes for one of his highest totals of the season.

Wade, who rested for four games Jan. 18-23, has totaled 52 points and shot 23 for 34 (67.6 percent) in the last two contests.

"Since I got back, I've been looking for ways to be aggressive when I can," Wade said. "I'm just doing what I can."

The Clippers (34-17) are coming off a tough loss, falling 116-115 to Denver on Monday on a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Los Angeles, which has dropped two of three, took the lead with 6.2 seconds remaining on a 3 by Matt Barnes.

Griffin had 36 points and 11 rebounds, but he went 6 of 10 from the free-throw line in the second half. Los Angeles, which ranks among the NBA's top teams in total rebounds, lost the battle on the glass 52-37. The Clippers allowed 17 offensive rebounds which resulted in 24 second-chance points for the Nuggets.

"Offensive rebounds were huge," Griffin said. "The turnovers down the stretch were big. I've got to shoot better from the free throw line. All of those things."

When these teams met Nov. 7 in Miami, the Clippers held James to 18 points. However, they could not contain Wade, as he scored 11 of his 29 points during the fourth quarter in a 102-97 Heat victory. Griffin had 27 points and 14 rebounds.

The Clippers have won the last five meetings between these clubs at Staples Center since Miami's 100-94 victory Dec. 9, 2007.

The Heat are opening a stretch of six straight games on the road. Miami is 14-9 away from home after going 29-12 last season.

I'm apprehensive about this game. Miami has had their share of troubles so perhaps Clippers can take advantage. I hope Clippers play well and come out ahead. This is a big test for them.

Yeah but I'm getting a little annoyed that we've had to face these "big tests" without our floor leader. But such is life.

Heat haven't won @ Staples since the big three got together. This goes back to the Baron days.

I was hoping we'd pull it out over Denver, this is going to be tough on our weary team.

If CP were around we would do the Monster Mash all over them.

BG vs LBJ will be interesting. BG did a good job but we can't afford to get fouls. Who will guard BG? Since he's been in beast mode few can. LBJ will probably try. Maybe Matt can at least slow Wade. Bosh may be a problem since he can spread the floor but who's gonna rebound? I wonder if Bullock is able to guard Wade/Allen? JJ sure can't. Trapping Collison will hurt but not like trapping CP but the last time we ran our offense through CP now it's through BG. They will be facing an entirely different team. If our shooters show up, game over.

JJ can certainly guard Ray Allen. Nobody knows that better than Doc. He had trouble guarding Wade in Miami. But anybody would have had trouble guarding Wade when he's playing with a chip on his shoulder.

Good Game. We should win. Meanwhile the Warriors got blasted by the Bobcats at HOME. How did we lose to the Warriors? Wizards and Bobcats both beat them on the road. WoW

Easy. They hate us up there and it is a divisional rivalry game, so they get up for it.

I am looking forward to this game. I predict a close game and a Clippers victory.

Yeah the Warriors totally looked past the Wizards in order to blow out a hated rival in the Clippers. A Clippers team on the tail end of a grueling schedule and a 2nd of a back-to-back. Now GS are back to playing mediocre basketball. Congratulations to them.

If you are a Clippers fan and want LBJ on this team then read this juicy little nugget.

Honestly don't think LeBron and CP3 would mesh well together. Both need the ball in their hands.

It would be an adjustment for LeBron for sure, he'd be more of a catch & shoot, roll man and post up player.

I'd honestly trade CP straight up for LeBron though, him and Blake would be scary as **** for opposing teams.

I see people saying this, but it really is false. They say the same thing about "Melo", and other ball dominant players.

But the reality is there is not position on the floor that wouldn't benefit from

an expert playmaking PG who can get them the ball in their favorite positions.

Most of the guys who people claim "Need the ball in their hands" are generally on teams who have below average playmakers as PGs.

I don't think people are saying it because LeBron is "ball dominat" they are saying it because he is also "an expert playmaking PG who can get them the ball in their favorite positions" just like CP.

Both Chris and LBJ are both so unselfish which could be a problem....or a weapon, who knows?

Surprised as many media people suspect us to win this game. This should almost be looked at as impossible with a fully healthy big three playing.

Don't think it would be problem at all. The reason LBJ would want to come here is because of Paul. He understands just how good of a playmaker CP3 is. No Paul no chance of getting James.

LBJ is nowhere near an expert playmaker Nor a PG. He is an ABOVE AVERAGE playmaker for his position and a good passer.

Don't mistake getting double teamed and passing to the open man for

for setting up plays and getting your teammates the ball in the right

spots throughout the entire game.

LBJ is my favorite player of all time.... man, that would be badass if we got him! Hell, I've always had a nagging thought that 2010 wasn't the end of the LeBron-to-Clippers story anyway.

Imagine what the new TV deal would look like Shocked

You must not want Lebron James play much. He is a great play maker for any position.

Lol, you've never watched LeBron play basketball. His playmaking and court vision is tops in the league right next to Chris.

Yep, James is pretty darn good, not quite in Paul's league but excellent for the position he plays.

I've watched lebron play more than most.

Again to the untrained eye I can see why you say that.

But if you understand the ins and outs of basketball you clearly

see what I am saying.

Lebron makes plays out of the double team. Which means someone

is always open.

Chris paul sets up plays from the top of the key which is an entirely

different skill set.

If Lebron were that good he'd just play PG and dominate the entire

league at PG. But there is a reason he plays SF.

Magic was a 6'9 PG. Lebron is a 6'8 SF who makes great passing plays at his position.

The PG and the SF are two very different positions that require different skill sets.

This isn't a debate really. Just watch the game tonight and see where most of Lebrons "Playmaking" comes from.

JJ Reddick out with Hip,Back,Knee, etc. Doc said JJ is a little banged up and pulled him out of shootaround earlier today. Jamal will start in his place. Sasha Vujacic sighting? Possibly

Doc said in his pre-game presser that JJ won't play tonight due to a back/hip issue. Bummer. Jamal will start instead.

Well, it's not like JJ has been giving us much the last couple of games. Gonna need a miracle to beat the champs without our starting back court... a miracle like some production from the 3-spot.
